help! how to get Cydia?

Hi, I am new here and not a top-notch geek, so here goes:
I recently bought an iPhone 3G in New Zealand, which is apparently one of the places you can buy it unlocked without a contract
A friend here in Beijing has told me of great software you can get on your iPhone through Cydia
I know nothing about Cydia or Installer - whenever people on the Net talk about them it's with ridiculously technical jargon

please tell me in simple English:
how do I get Cydia on to my iPhone
do I need to get Installer 4 as well?
is there a chance this will cause me problems next time I sync on iTunes

Hi! and welcome to our boards!


The iPhone 3G uses a simple program called quickpwn
to add Cydia + Installer. You can choose one, the other, or both.
The process takes about 5-10 minutes depending on your iPhone.
Just google quickpwn
download the latest version, run the program, and it's easy
as 1-2-3. Even a person who has no idea how to mess with an iPhone
can do it! And no it won't cause problems with the syncing. BUT it will slow
down the iPhone a bit, and it voids the warranty as well.

gee, I thought it was too easy - I downloaded and tried to activate Quickpwn
but it wants to know the location of the iPhone firmware
I can NOT find it, I have gone into Explorer and checked "show hidden files"
and even unchecked "hide protected operating system files" despite windows warning me against it - nothing - nada
have searched for it in many ways, by file name by iPhone by 2.2, even by its file type ipsw
i've searched in C:\Users\Alan\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes
and there is nothing about software updates
any ideas someone? thanks

Before jailbreaking, you need to download and save the 2.2 IPSW file to your desktop. You can get it here, http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=750
