The app store through itunes has many free apps, just click the "Free" button. One usefull free app is "AppVee" you can watch a video of most apps and get a review on your iphone to help you decide if thats an app you woulld like.

App snipernis your friend, it even post apps on sale!!! App Sniper is the name of the app

there are many free apps in iTune store, try them first.
but when you decide to use iphone, it means you have to pay the additional charge for iphone apps.
