My iphone was stolen on friday (Feb. 20). About 5 minutes later it was turned off. I deactivated the account and replaced the sim card in an old phone.
What can I do? I filed a report with the police but this is Boston so it's definitely not on their list of priorities. There were no security cameras where it was taken.
Apple said there is absolutely 0 they can do about it. ATT also says there is NOTHING they can do about it.
Despite their claims I've read tons of stories about IMEI numbers being "blacklisted" or the police tracking the phone b/c of its supposed advanced GPS capabilities. So far between the police, ATT and Apple, everyone has been saying there is nothing to be done.
ANYYY advice?

if you had either A. a mobileme account (http://www.tuaw.com/2008/12/17/iphone-thief-thwarted-by-mobileme-sync/) or B. ilocalis (http://ilocalis.com/) . you probably wouldve had a better chance of finding it. other than that, i see really little of what they can do.
if i had my phone lost/stolen the LAST thing i would do is disactivate the account right away. even if i didnt have the two above, i probably coudlve still gone to att.com and waited for the thief to make some phone calls, then look at the call log and try to figure out who has it.

since the phone was off like 5 minutes later (it took me 2 weeks to figure out how to turn it off) i figured they had either ditched the sim card so I couldn't track it anyway or knew what they were doing and weren't dumb enough to use the phone
i work at a hospital and i was in the cafe getting lunch. i had a bunch of stuff in my hands and i put it all down for a second to get a fork and knife. then POOF gone. it didn't even occur to me that it could have been stolen in a matter of 2 seconds with me standing in front of it so i thought i left it at the register or something but i hadn't.
nowwwwww i have to pay 400 to buy a new one even though it was only 200 to begin with. plus why do they pressure you to get the $70 insurance and then DONT tell you that it doesnt cover damage or theft?

AT&T doesn't have any way of tracking lost iPhones, but I think there is another way somehow because I know of someone who's iPod was tracked via its serial # and the local police found it and returned it. Might be a fluke, but I will ask my co-worker (it was her daughter's iPod that as stolen) and see what she did...

If insurance covered theft, wouldn't people be claiming "oh no my iPhone was stolen can I get another one?" and then selling it on ebay? I am sure they figured this out, which is why it is not covered.
I didn't even realize you could get insurance for an iPhone other than through like, State Farm or something like that? Who is it through?

I had my iPhone stolen in January, and I left it active, since my data is unlimited, and I watched the minutes daily. Well anyways the idiot started making calls on it 3 days after it had been stolen, I gave the incoming and outgoing numbers to the police, and about a hour and a half later the phone called my house, with the officer on the other end and he brought it back.
My phone also was turned off immediately after being took, however the next day I noticed it was back on, and I saw the data amounts being transmitted through AT&T's website, so I knew (and hoped) it was just a matter of time before they made calls. Ended up being a teenager who went down into a locker room and popped the lock at my gym. I filed a police report immediately after it was stolen.
