View Full Version : Going illegal !!!!

On 19th December 2008, I bought an iPhone 3G 16 gigs. To this day, 24th February 2009, the Apple Stores are still not yet accessible. I wonder why Apple Stores and the Mauritius Telecom/ORANGE have not resolved this issue.

So, can I go illegal, can I jailbreak my iPhone ? I know I shouldn't, but can't wait anymore ! Without applications my iPhone looks like a stupid phone.

Has Someone ever jailbroken his iPhone ? What are the risks ?

Thanks,
Judex.

Not sure what you mean by the Apple store is not available. Are you talking about the App Store in iTunes and on your phone? That shouldn't be an issue, regardless of the carrier (well, if there is a problem with data usage, then the carrier might put a restriction on how much data you can pull a month), but as far as iTunes is concerned, you should be able to download what you want, free or not, and then transfer it to your phone through the Sync process.
As far as Jailbreaking, the risk is up to you. There are plenty of people that are jailbroken and are fine. But there are also a bunch of people that are having issues, if not catastrophies with their phones trying to jailbreak them. I can guess that a lot of them are not sure what they are doing, and screwed something up.
My suggestion is for your first issue with the App store, call Apple. they handle the app store and they will be the ones to assist you with fixing any problems reaching the apps store.
As far as JBing, research, research, research, before attempting anything.

Hi Hawk,

Thank you for your post.

I mean no one from Mauritius could buy applications from Apple Stores because Mauritius is not in the list of Countries at Apple Stores.

Yes, I understand that jailbreaking could be a problem. Thanks to point this out to me.

I have complained to Apple, but I did not receive any reply. IF Apple agreed to sell iPhones to Mauritius, I wonder why Apple does not allow the purchase of applications.

Hawk, thanks again.

Cheers,
Judex.

But you have an Orange account and bought your phone legally, right?

Regardless.... if he's connected to Wifi, he should beable to download any application.

Yes, but apparently from what I am getting from him is that his Country is "up in the air" right now, and if iTunes is identifying him in that country and blocking his access, that is some thing he should be talking to Apple about. Expecially if he bought a phone and plan legally.
His country is a little tiny island off the coast of Madagascar

Hi Hawk,

Yes, I have a 2 year package with Mauritius Telecom/ORANGE since 19th December 2008. This is why I am at a loss to understand why Apple does not list Mauritius in their list of Countries so as to enable Mauritius Owners of iPhone to buy the applications from Apple Stores.

I confirm that I legally bought my iPhone from Mauritius Telecom/ORANGE.

I complained in the "Apple feedback". Please let me know the official Apple mail address so that I may send in another complaint.

Thank you Hawk.

Cheers,
Judex.

Judex, are you saying that you can't open an iTunes account, which would mean you also can't purchase songs?

He's saying that he cannot get to the App store. Something is wrong there. If he had an iPod Touch, he'd be fine.
I would call Apple Support and get this straightened out. There is no reason for you to suffer if you legitimately bought your phone and have a valid contract.

Dear afireinside904,

Thank you for your post and the link. It makes very interesting reading indeed.

I will continue to explore the possibilities. From where could I purchase an application to enable me to store Excel 2007, Word 2007 and Adobe pdf files in my iPhone ?

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Coasts,

Yes, this is correct ! All Mauritius iPhone Owners cannot open an account and so cannot purchase songs and applications !

This is commercially stupid to sell iPhones to Mauritius and nothing else can be done with it. I imagine a Man selling a new Brand of cars and later says : "No spareparts stores are available !"

Can you help ? Thank you.

Hi afireinside904,

I downloaded the software, but it appears that Windows Vista cannot open it ! Is it a software that runs under Mac only ?

Is there a "quickpwn22" that runs under windows vista ?

Thanks to help.

Well, you need to have a credit card and local address of a country for which an iTunes store is available. Do you have any friends living in the U.S. or England? If so, you could ask that they buy a prepaid Credit Card (such as http://www.simon.com/giftcard/), register it to a fake address and open an account with that. Of course, your purchasing abilities would be limited to the prepaid amount, but at least you would have access to the hundreds of free apps and podcasts.

Hi Coasts,

This is a good idea !

I really need to buy some applications that will be useful to me.

Thinking to jailbreak my iPhone. I downloaded quickpwn22 but it does not open under windows vista. I think it needs the Mac OS. If I get a software to jailbreak, but working under windows, I will be very happy !

Thank you again for your help.

There are very few risks to jailbreaking your iPhone. As long as you follow the instructions in QuickPWN or whatever you are using, you'll be good.

AND JAILBREAKING ISN'T ILLEGAL! GEEZ!

On the FAQS of the Orange MU website there are instructions on how to create an itunes account using a US address.i've done it works but you will only be able to get the free content on the itunes store and not purchase anything...but its already something...you can enjoy the vast array of free podcasts which is great!..if you get problems while doing it email me. Cheers Krishnen

Hi Krishnen,

Thank you for your post.

The free apps are ok, but I need professional apps to enable me to store pdf, excell etc files on my iPhone. This I cannot do because Apple Stores do not allow purchases from Mauritius. Commercially speaking, Mauritius Telecom/ORANGE should not have sold iPhones to Mauritius if the Apple Stores do not allow any purchase of professional apps to get more functionality to the iPhone. At least, the Buyers should have been warned about this issue (non access to Apple Stores).

As regards the free apps, one cannot have it the normal way unless unless one cheats a bit ! If you are Mauritian, resident of Mauritius why give a US address ? This is cheating ! This is because Apple Stores so far do not have anything to do with Mauritius. The logic is if you can get free apps why can't you buy apps because buying apps is more interesting to Apple. There must be a serious commercial issue !

Thanks for your post.

Cheers,
Judex.

Well an easy fix would be using a proxy to make it look like you are in a country that the appstore supports such as the U.S. Then you could download all the stuff you want and then just sync to the phone.

Thank you for your post.

Yes, this is possible, but I am at a lost to understand why iPhones are sold in Mauritius and the Apple Stores are not accessible to the Mauritius Owners of iPhones !

Thanks again.

I really like ReaddleDocs for all my pdf, excel, word, powerpoint stuff. It costs 10 us dollars.

Another good one that lets you edit excel spreadsheets is mobilefiles 2.0.

Anyways i hope you get that stuff sorted out and i think apple and its affiliated telecom companies have gotten past caring about user satisfaction and just goes after as many sales to as many countries as possible.

Hi Bilal,

Thank you for your post.

I guess that there is an issue between Apple and Mauritius Telecom/ORANGE. It is not possible that Apple agrees to sell iPhones to Mauritius and would not allow purchases of apps from Apple Stores.

It is possible that ORANGE overseas and Mauritius Telecom/ORANGE convened to sell iPhones to Mauritius without the ok from Apple otherwise Apple would not behave stupidly.

Again thanks for your post.

Hi, bought my Iphone on same date as you.1st You just have to set up a free account on Itunes on USA to be able to connect to Itunes and download content. You can even purchase if you want to. Guys at Ishop would be glad to show you how.

2ndly, Jailbreak is totally safe. I did this for all version updates, I just cannot stay with limited options for something I paid for. Jailbreaking is not illegal.

What info do you need ? Quote your specs in answer.

Hi Nosh,

Thanks for your mesage.

I want to buy Applications by using my Visa Card direct to Apple Stores. The other ways to do it amount to Cyber Felony.

Jailbreaking is indeed illegal ! Breaking into Somebody's Property has always been illegal, even if the other Guy is super riched !

I have been toying with my iPhone 3G 16 gigs. I know the many ins and outs already. I am a Programmer.

Again thanks for your message.

I have to argue you on this. Jailbreaking your own property that you paid for with your own money is not illegal. Altering the OS is not illegal, just against Apples policy, and for doing it, you void your warranty.

Now, getting apps for free that normally require payment? THAT is illegal. But many of the apps available through jailbreaking are free. There are some that require payment, and as far as I know, if they are worth it, people pay. Those that go around that, or share their reg key, they are doing illegal activities.

But just jailbreaking your phone is not - and jailbreaking so you can unlock the phone is DEFINITELY LEGAL. In the US, a cell phone manufacturer cannot block you from being able to use the phone with a different carrier. They don't have to help you, and they can make unlocking it difficult to begin with, but they cannot stop you. That would be illegal.

Hi Hawk,

Thank you very much for your message.

I understand that it is all a matter of opinion.

After 6 months, this week I am terminating my 2 year contract with Mauritius Telecom / ORANGE. Besides not being able to buy directly from Apple Stores, if I want to be able to, I should insert a US address with the tel No. of Somebody else who does not know me. This is Cyber Felony.

Further, I see some problems.

1. Cannot create folders to organize my mails on my iPhones. It is a problem of the Provider being POP3 instead of IMAP.

2. Cannot attach pdf files to my mails to be sent.

3. Cannot store pdf and Excel files on my iPhone.

4. Badly need to buy Applications from Apple Stores that are not opened for Mauritius. Licence Agreement should have been in hand before launching the iPhones on the Mauritian market.

Now I would rather go for a mobile with the Windows OS. I must admit that I love my iPhone. It is very beautiful, excellent hand feel.

Hawk, thanks again.

Cheers.
