Every time I try and use the ipod feature of my iphone 3g it plays for a while and then just stops (pause mode, basically) and I have to push the play key again to resume the song. At first I thought this might be happening as I was walking and somhow pushed a button, but the last time it happend I re-started it and placed it on the counter and it happened 3 more times.

Anyone else have this happen? Is my 6 week old phone defective? Help please.

I would recommend trying a soft reset by holding the home and sleep buttons together for about 10 seconds. If that doesn't seem to fix the problem you can try restoring in iTunes to a factory stock iPhone. That will likely fix the issue.

Thanks. I've rebooted it several times for different reasons. Once it locked up completely. Not sure I understand what "restoring in iTunes to a factory stock iPhone" would do, or even how to do it. Wasn't that what I did the first time I synced it with iTunes, to get the updates? And wasn't it a factory stock phone 6 weeks ago when I bought it? How/why does that help? Thanks for your help.

Well it would restore it to the stock iPhone. That is, nothing on it. Just like it was out of the box. This would make sure the phone is free of software problems. If the issue continues it might be a hardware problem (somehow) or might be an issue with your music. I would suggest making sure the songs are able to be played on another iPod (if you have one) or even within iTunes.

If none of the above fix the issue then you should make an appointment at an Apple store and they can either fix the issue or replace the defective device.

I actually have the same problem. I will try a reset and see if that helps.

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is that somehow the phone is receiving a "pause" signal.
Does this only happen with the headset? If so, it could be that you have a loose or faulty connection in the mic/button that's shorting enough to register a command.
