Hi, I got an 8gb iphone 3g and thought it wasnt enough space so traded it with $60 for a 16gb on craigslist. The trader was a fairly nerdy honest looking(no offense, im a nerd too) 18 year old kid who said he bought the phone 2 months ago and it still has 10 months warranty. I brought the iphone to the Apple store, they activated it, and all is well. I have no reason to really assume it is stolen, but i am overcautious, and I was wondering, since the guy only included the iphone, could it be stolen? I am extremely honest and had my 16gb 3G stolen a month ago and it was one of the worst experiences of my life, and I would never want to use a stolen phone. Since Apple activated it, does that mean it is legit? Also, if it is stolen would I get in trouble somehow? Once again I have no reason to think it is stolen, I am just asking to be overcautious.
Thanks,
Timbo

If he physically bought the iPhone into an Apple store, Then theres a low chance that it's stolen.
Buying or selling stolen property is highly illegal, And does have it's consequences.
Craigslist is notorious for scammers and thieves, However if you take a few precautionary steps, You should be able to avoid them.

If the phone was stolen and reported stolen, I doubt that it could be activated.

It can be activated even if it is stolen easily on Itunes(lost mine and heard all the crappy stories how anyone could use my phone)...but since you activated it at an Apple Store...a stolen phone would have had the IMEI number reported stolen and I would think that there would be less chance that Apple would just turn the other cheek and let you activate it..
I think if I were you, I would feel pretty confident that the phone is completely legit....

Their device ID would have been a red flag if it was stolen.

If you are still feeling uncertain, even though you will be out of the money you paid, you can contact Apple and see if they are able to check either the serial number and tell you where it was originally activated.

I upgraded to a 16gb 3G iphone a couple months ago and sold it . It was activated on my account . Was I supposed to notify AT&T or Apple that I no longer have it ? Can the buyer buy things on the app store or itumes and use my account ? Or is that only taken from the account on the sim card which I still use on another phone ?

Its always usually a good idea to have the IMEI updated on your account, this ensures you have the lastest Over The Air updates, and that they get pushed to your SIM appropriately. However, your AT&T service is not tied to iTunes whatsoever, so I do not believe they would have a way to be using your iTunes account unless you didn't restore first, probably.
