Folks,

I have a question. I tend to use my iPhone 3G as a conventional phone without the headphones most of the time. This includes some outdoor use in rain, snow, etc. Obviously with the phone to my ear the headphone jack is pointed up and to the elements. How concerned do I need to be about the water sensor under these conditions. Not so much about damage to the phone as I suspect that it will be fine, but more-so if I were to have a problem in another area with the phone would this type of use trip the water sensor such that it could cause me a problem with legitimate warranty coverage down the road? If it could be a problem, what should I, could I do about it to protect the sensor from water intrusion?

Thanks in advance,
Paul

I suppose in a downpour it could cause problems. Cheap and easy solution?...tape

If moisture turns the sensor red your warranty is void. Do a search at the forums main page reference this subject and you will find ample discussion on the subject. There are a cases that have plugs for the ports. Go to the main page scroll down to cases for the 3g do a search for these type cases and you again should find ample information. Hope this helps.

Thanks Jerry. Actually, I know. I have searched and read those posts. I guess my question was more "what does it take (volume of water) to turn the sensor red?" Most threads I've read are at one end of the spectrum or the other in so much as they are either "I dropped my phone in water", I washed my iPhone, my son washed my iPhone. Which obviously will trip the water sensor. The other end of the spectrum that I was able to find was, "my warranty was voided and my phone has never been wet."

Paul, I am paranoid about moisture getting into the ports since it is my understanding that a small amount of moisture may trigger the censor.

Jerry, I think that's where I'm starting to come down on this as well. It actually, mildly irritates me. I've never had to concern myself with the use of my phone in my daily life and I don't think that it is fair that we need to now honestly. I understand their point and God knows that people can be well, stupid from time to time but If a "golden beebee" drop of water falls in my headphone jack and it simply hits the sensor and turns it red and affects nothing else as far as operation of the phone goes that to me is a design issue. Life happens. I guess I'll just need to be more cautious. Thank you as always for your reply.

I love my iPhone and came from a Treo 650. It was a tank and no water censors.

That's funny, I came from a Treo 650 and a Treo 755P. It was a tank. I also couldn't be happier with the iPhone. It really is an incredible phone and in my opinion, better than the Treo in every aspect. I can learn to deal with the water concerns. Everything else is too good to let it bother me that much. Thanks again.

There was a water sensor on the Treo. It was in the battery compartment. I had them on my Treo 600, 650, and 680. All stayed nice and bright white, too. I recently installed the iSteam app and immediately got worried about the water sensor on my iPhone getting triggered from blowing into the microphone...
