i've had this problem quite a lot since i updated to the latest firmware,
i find switching the toggle on the 'Airplane Mode' on and off and that sometimes corrects it. If not turning the phone on and off usually fixes this problem, but as i said it happens every couple of days with me

Thanks for this tip. I had just put in a block on text messages for my new 3GS and thought that they had inadvertently blocked my 3g data in toto. Switching the Airplane Mode on and off saved me a call to CS.
