The most innovative iPhone app for distributing music I've seen this week is a 10-track iPhone app from the Grammy-nominated (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7TMWRQqfMw) electronic artist Deadmau5, developed by an Irish company called Future Audio Workshop (http://www.futureaudioworkshop.com/). It lets anyone with an iPhone, regardless of their level of experience, mix and remix every song in the album. This is only the first step: The company plans to apply the same approach to several other electronica albums as well.
Thoughts? I find this very intriguing. The iPhone could lead the way for albums being distributed in multitrack, perhaps yielding a new standard in audio delivery formats?

Dave this is really exciting when you think of the potential In addition the music industry has really been slow to adept to the distribution of their product resulting in significant loss of revenue due to piracy. Instead of being innovative they sought to be restrictive and shot themselves in the foot or higher. If they can adept faster and make it easier, less expensive and more innovative for the consumer to buy their product then to 'pirate' it they may be able to stem their revenue loss.

Any value-added service like this will help sales to some degree. Obviously, it's not uncrackable (like any digital medium), but significantly more annoying to crack and distribute than standard audio, which should make it attractive to the labels.
The merging of the iTunes music and apps divisions. I love it.

I'm kinda confused...is this about an app? Whats the video supposed to be?

Disregard the video... that's just showing the artist that's doing it first.
It's an app that contains multitrack music from the artist (basically the whole album all split up into seperate tracks), that the user can remix.

Trent Reznor did something along these lines with his last 2-3 albums. Releasing the tracks in (insert your favorite music editor here) formats. Then on the NIN website, offered a spot for fans to upload their remixed tracks. His project with Saul Williams did the same. Very fun, and the creativity out there amazed me.

I think what impressed me most about this was its distribution format... it's an iPhone app! That's what's really new here... delivering music via the Appstore.

I agree, and I am sure that as we see processor and memory upgrades, the possibilities are endless. Very cool.

Another band "doin' it"

I actually love these guys. Takes me right back to high school. But I wouldn't buy this app because the music is only streaming and it isn't very good quality, apparently. Still, I agree with the article that we're going to be seeing a lot of this.
