I really like this design-layout for a possible new iPhone ("4G/3.0"). Especially the bigger display, and the slim look from the side. I also like the silver colour and the front cam!

ditto. 3G is a reference to the network, not what generation model it is. Technically we are only on the 2nd generation model. AT&T's 4g network will not be ready for quite some time.

i don't see it being much more than a novelty, or at this point even a rumor. I sure don't wanna hold my phone directly in front of me while i'm talking to someone and hold it still so they can see up my nose. i'd rather see other features such as mms, c/p, ability to attach files in email, etc.

Remember - you can turn this "video-feature" off, and the excuse will be, that you don't wanna use all this data on your friends... ;)

And I'm sorry to say that I don't agree with you!..MMS is old fashion, in old mobiles - not a great mobile-gadget as the iPhone 3.0. I would like to talk with my little niece while see her smiley face etc. (But I respect your need!)

i agree and if every phone was as great as the iPhone MMS would not be necessary. However, most people still have flip phones of some sort and it is still the main means of sending instant pictures. I know of the email work around but for simple people using simple phones explaining to them how to email from their razr to my iPhone is almost as painful as pulling my back hairs out one by one. Until MMS is completely dead and all phones are email friendly it is nice to have the option if one wants to use it.

However, MMS is not the main thing I want. the other things I listed are far more important. I could care less about sending pictures for the most part although it's nice to occasionally do so. C/P, A2DP, easily attaching files or downloading files and saving to my phone are far more important. I do have faith that Apple is listening to their customers needs and will implement all of this at some point but only time shall tell.

I remember seeing pictures of 3G case molds that "proved" the existence of a front-facing camera for video conferencing. After that, I'm taking these highly unofficial rumors with not only a grain of salt, but a whole salt lick.

Besides, Apple won't give you everything to want in the next iPhone; they'll need to hold something back for the 2010 model.

As if a large amount of iPhone users using regular EDGE and 3G to check mail and go online wasn't a large enough drain on the network, now I have to worry about people video chatting and hogging it up even more?

i agree with ya on all points Phil.

The network is already near its capacity. unless AT&T really upgrades its 3g network, video chat would suck. I'd be ok with an iChat app sans video that runs in the background without disconnecting however.

I've said this before, but Apple usually does a complete overhaul for their 3rd generation of a product. Besides, it will be just in time for all the early adopters to ditch the old for the new as the 2 year contracts will be up. However, I agree. It was nice to get some 2nd gen software features on the 1st gen phone.

I also look forward to iChat AV, even if it is somewhat novelty. The option may be video only with WiFi connection. That way there won't be such a drain on the AT&T network.

Even though ALL this talk is purely speculation, I agree that it would be surprising if (at least initially) the hypothectical video chat would work over the cell network. Believe it or not, there is still a HUGE chunk of the US that does not have access to the 3G network. They could easily enable video over cell in a future firmware update.

I haven't kept up with the whole Apple/Cingular/ATT exclusivity agreement and it's evolution, but we are approaching the original end date. I can only imagine that if Apple has the ability to open the flood gates and let other carriers have a go, and maybe even sell unlocked versions, the device will probably then see a major cosmetic overhaul.

Call me old fashioned, but as much as I like this MacBook Air looking iPhone, I prefer the photo posted on the home page of the Ti/glass version...

I think we're overestimating the bandwidth requirements of mobile video teleconferencing. If the phone has a beefier CPU, there are lots of ways to highly compress video (especially if they keep the window small and low-framerate) so that a two-way conversation wouldn't take up much more bandwidth than a Pandora stream.

Just guessing.

Of course there will be a way to turn it off...first of all not all phones (or any) in the US have video chat so you would have to be able to turn it off. Plus, it would use more battery and some people cant stand that. Just like turning off 3G.

I'm going to be the "Nay Sayer" and tell you that the new phone will probably look just like the 3G, and that besides an upgraded CPU and GPU, there won't be much in the way of change. We are all going to be severely disappointed when Video recording, Copy/paste, MMS, Flash, and everything else that the phone is lacking becomes very evident.

...of course, I love being proved wrong.

I also don't see a heavy cosmetic change, nor a drastic thinning happening. If anything it would be a little thicker probably. I think they will just up CPU and memory and stick on a hot camera, keeping the software compatible with previous versions.

They probably do know about it, but the list is for what Apple should have included in the software to begin with, and what they should add to match features found on generic smartphones.

Jailbreaking is a way to get many of those features, but it's unapproved and not part of the original OS programming, so stability is suspect. ( I know a lot of people here are jailbroken and "loving it", but I think there are just as many people that are or did have issues when jailbroken, and not all of them are due to user error.)

i'd like to go on record and agreeing that video chat would be awesome but i think they need to get video recording off the ground first...which (i forget who posted) said they would prob hold out video chat till 2010...which is logical...as for the design...it looks awesome, but i tend to feel that the 3G (which i have) is too small for my hands...i have a hard case on it which adds just enough to be comfortable...and i've said it before, when V1 came out, i was agaisnt the iphone all together, had a chance to use a buddy's, and went out and got the 3G (once i got the money...haha) and im never looking back...as soon as V3 comes out ill be getting one...reguardless...i love it that much...contract be damned
