Any electritions out here know if it is possible to splice a home iPhone charger and connect it to a 12v wire and ground in a car ?

It will require all different electronics for that power conversion. Can I ask why?

I agree with psylichon. As I recall the USB 2.0 voltage spec is 4.75 to 5.25 VDC. You would need to transform the 12.0 VDC output from the car down to 5 VDC to avoid frying your iPhone.

what's an electrition?

Electrition is a misspelled version of electrician. An electrician is one whose occupation is the installation, maintenance, repair, or operation of electric equipment and circuitry.

LOL
titty dave are you serious with that car charger LOL
What I want to do is hide my wires behind the dash , and charge my iPhone 3g while getting video and audio to my indash

Now I am thinking of connecting a ciggarete lighter adapter to a 12v wire and grounding it behind the dash while using it for power with a powerjolt griffin and the USB from the apple composite cable

Just trying to save you from yourself. Folks who can't spell electrician probably shouldn't be playing with electricity. But by all means, knock yourself out with that gameplan there.

I dont think my electrician can spell his name but he is a beast with wires
does no one know how to wire a iphone usb cord to the car directly

before going all out and tearing up a cord, take a look at this:
http://cablejive.com/chargeconverter.html
This is made to correct the problems with going from the firewire charging method to the USB2.0 that the 3G uses.

You would not wire a usb cord direct to a cars voltage system. You have to regulate the dc from 12v to whatever voltage the iPhone charges at which is......5v 1 amp it looks like. If they don't market a direct wire in you would be best to "hack" a cigarette lighter plug in charger. I will see if I can find a good option for you and return, hopefully with some good news.

Dude, seriously, take it in to someone who knows what the heck they're doing. Your dash and your iPhone will thank you for it.

The Apple

Don't let Dave make you scared. You can always install an accessory cigarette lighter socket behind the dash and plug in the regulator to that. Simple but not the cleanest setup.

You're right. iCafe, you should definitely try this. And please, post pics of the process!

Like everyone says, you cannot charge/power an iPhone off of a direct 12v source (bad things will happen). What exactly are you trying to achieve? Just want to be able to charge and have audio by just using the dock connector? What kind of aux input do you have on you head unit?

hmm... on a guitar forum i used to frequent, someone tried scalloping their own fretboard (for those that don't know, that means cutting away portions of the fretboard). It SHOULD end up looking like this:

Well, this is what the amateur luthier came up with.

What do you have now that you intend on using? Are you going for just charge? Charge and audio? Charge, audio, and video?? Give me some info so I can be of more assistance.

Well, you really just need to tap into a 12-V power line. That's the trickiest part. I suggest you post on some forums devoted to your particular model of car. I get great DIY advice from the Element Owner's Club for my ride.

Once you find that, splice in your female cigarette-lighter port, then connect your iPhone charger and feed it up through the dash. Assuming that charger unit also passes audio (I can recommend a Belkin unit that I use that does this), you just need the proper interconnex: 1/8" stereo to RCA component left and right. The Belkin unit has the 1/8" connector on the charging unit itself, so since that's behind the dash here anyway, it would work.

I personally don't know of any iphone car charger that will pass video as well from the dock connector, but I don't think you want to do this, do you?

Thanks , Yes i also want video to pass through my iphone from the connector, the actual wires i will be using is the apple component wires they plug directly into my component port on my radio. This will give it video and audio all i have to do is set my radio to aux... now that is the easy part i just have to purchase the wire for 50 ... but the tricky part is getting power through the usb wire connected to the component wire.. I do not want to plug it into the cigarette lighter. I want a clean install. I was thinking of doing what you said and connecting my own ciggerate input behind the dash and plugging the powerjolt/usb in there.. only problem is that i heard the powerjolt make a hissing noise

Anyone use the powerjolt ??? does it make noise while charging iphone?

psylichon

Actually, my Belkin does this as well... I always assumed the problem was specific to my car, but I suppose not.

I have no advice to offer you on that one. Nor on splicing in the Apple component cable. Let us know what you come up with, though.

Look into getting a ground loop isolator to reduce the noise if it sounds like what you might call "alternator whine". The ground loop isolator will NOT eliminate GSM noise though. You would plug it into the audio portion of your component cables and then into the inputs of the stereo. I have not found a direct wire-in for the USB charger yet, but I am still working on that. I use the incharge charger with my component cables in my car and it works fine but still needs a ground loop isolator. http://www.xtrememac.com/chargers/incharge_auto/index.php Small plug-in unit so if you install the aux. socket behind the dash it wont take up as much space as some. This unit has a light in it so if you power it full time it will constantly be lit robbing your battery all the time, so just keep that in mind. Looking forward to the pics.
