I just bought an iTouch. Internet works great at home (wireless wifi) and at work (wireless wifi). However, when out, only if I am in range of a free wifi, will I be able to use most of the cool things about the iTouch. The iPhone, however, can connect anytime, I believe. Any way to make the iTouch do that, as well?

Not until AT&T gets off their tushes and updates their cell towers. AT&T and Apple have been in talks the last several months about using AT&T cell towers for WiFi access. It can be done but some modifications must be done on those towers to split their cell signals from WiFi signals.
There is money to be made here people and right now it is a race to see what cell company comes up with that service first. Sure we Touch users might have to pay AT&T a small nominal fee for using their cell towers to access their signals but hey...it would be worth it. AT&T knows there are a lot of Touch users out there just dying to get their Touches hooked up "all the time" to AT&T WiFi services......

No, the wifi on the iPhone and iPod Touch work in exactly the same way.. the iPhone has 3G access as well, the iPod touch does not which is why the iPhone can connect where there's no free wifi access..
Depending on the country and carier you're with, some iPhone contracts allow you free wifi access to their access points as well.. In Australia, Telstra, Optus, Virgin and Vodafone all carry the iPhone and have 3G data plans included, and Telstra and Optus allow you to use their wifi access points as well..

Long answer short, with an iPod Touch, you have to be in Wifi to get internet. There is no way to add on another way to access the internet.

as far as I know you'd still need some kind of access to the 3G network...the ipod touch has no mechanism for this (it's not a cellphone). Not sure how updating cellphone towers would make any difference, unless AT&T starting charging for on-the-go wi-fi...
