iPod Touch Firmware Updgrade Help?

Ok well my cuz bought an iPod Touch off a friend who sold it to buy herself a 2nd gen. I believe the used iPod is under 1.4 firmware. And the problem is, my cuz likes the music her friend already added to the iPod. BUT she wants to add games to it, and I already have firmware 2.2.1 for iPod touch on my computer. But she's afraid she will loose all the music. Will it delete all the music? Or does it only delete the music when restoring not updating? please help!
