I am so bummed Apple Care is closed and I am stuck using this old PC because my 9 mo. old mackbook is not working. I had it plugged into to an external hard drive where I store my pictures, music, etc. I accidently unplugged it instead of ejecting and now I am getting this window that says Install_IOUSBFamily_kext.10_5_5. I don't know what this means and even if I plug in my wireless mouse the pointer will not work and none of the keys work. I am so pissed off right now. I am calling Apple Care tomorrow but in the meantime any ideas?

hmm... that's one of the kexts that is mentioned by the Dev Team that breaks DFU... have you by chance messed with that stuff?
I'm sure we can figure something out for ya, but worse comes to worse, you can restore your computer with the OS discs

I did jailbreak my iphone with this computer but after I updated to the new 10.5.6 update I had to jailbreak on another windows computer. I did try to install my discs but since I can't get the pointer to move and I can't get ENTER key to work I couldn't get it to run.
ps-computer was working fine after jailbreak until I unplugged external hardrive.

well, if you DID want to restore your OS, then put in the disc, turn your computer off, then turn it back on, and hold "option" until you see the OSX disc pop up... select it, and you can restore your OS from there. Your keyboard and mouse SHOULD work at all of those points. If not, then you have a more serious problem.

If hippo's advice doesn't work, I think you owe the Genius' that fixed your computer another visit. Maybe you'll get free AppleCare out of this or something?

How do I select it if the mouse doesn't move?

It worked!! thanks for your help hippo, the keyboard and trackpad are both working. The kext message still was there but I just closed it and it works fine. It took it back to 10.5.2. But I am scared now to do an update. I might leave it like this for now.

Yeah, I'd still talk it over with an apple rep. The fact that you got that message again after restorng is a little disturbing.

I ended up taking my Macbook in, they kept it to replace the outer casing because of cracks. They also had to replace the hard drive, blue tooth antenna, and restore the software. Luckily I had backed up on a portable hard drive. I took it in last Wed., they shipped it back to me and I received it Monday, but when I saw everything they had to do I was like WTH, I didn't think it needed all that but it is running pretty good so I'm not complaining, just surprised.

Connie, how is it cosmetics wise?

The exact same thing happened to my Aluminum on 10.5.6 after the kext replacement and iPhone Jailbreak. The usb ports, keyboard, and mouse were disabled. Time machine saved me. Don't try that kext replacement thing.

It's nice now, it looks like new because they replaced all the outside casing and had the inside around the keyboard replaced too. I just hope this thing with the stress cracks doesn't keep happening, I can see why they are changing over to aluminum. I love the white Macbook, but the quality and durability of the plastic Apple is using doesn't seem to hold up. The genius at Apple store says its common to get these stress cracks where you rest your palms. That's just wrong, I hope it doesn't continue to happen. At least I got my AppleCare for 2 more years.
