My work wifi didn't work at first (would just say something like "Cannot join network"), turned out they keep a list of all mac addresses that are allowed to connect. I sent them mine (it's in the about screen I think) and now I can connect.

Talk to your IT department - see if they allow non registered devices to attach.
You will most likely need a security key, and you may have to provide IT with your phones Mac address if they maintain Access Control Lists (ACLs).
Most decent work wi-fi will have a number of layers of security to prevent folks from just jumping onto your network from the parking lot - so it's not surprising that you have issues initially.

ok - if it's wide open - you may have to manually configure your iPhone with the correct DNS address (to be able to look up web pages)
Your IT people may have the DNS info for you
