View Full Version : Clippy: Copy and Paste

On Cydia. Details here (http://www.spaziocellulare.com/ispazio/en/2009/01/19/clippy-ispazio-exclusive-finally-the-real-copy-paste-for-iphone-and-ipod-touch-is-here/#more-1519). It's beta but I've been playing with it for about 15 minutes and it seems to work great in notes and email. Unfortunately no SMS and limited browser support (you can basically only copy editable text). One of the admins on ispazio says he'll post a guide to copy sms and browser so I guess we'll see. This will come in handy for work on the go- copying information between emails.

I'm trying to copy a URL from Safari into an email and it won't transfer over. It copies fine in Safari but the text disappears once I go to the email app. What am I doing wrong?

In SMS you can copy, but you can only copy the text you are currently inputting, just not the bubbles.

I copied a url from the browser and stayed on the clipboard when I switched apps. However the paste option was grayed out (but I could still see the url on the clipboard). I had to highlight some text and then the copy and paste both became usable and I was able to paste the url into email.
Looks like when you switch apps it doesn't remember you have something to paste- even though it's still technically on the clipboard.

Thanks. I finally got it figured out.

You can copy from BiteSMS. Just select the forward option for whatever text you want to copy and you are able to select the text.
I was just able to easily copy/paste login and PW for viewmymessage.com this way.
Works with emails, too. Just forward the email you need to copy from and copy the info you need and close the email out and paste it where you need it.

It says you can only copy and paste stuff that YOU type, so you can't just copy some text within a webpage and send it off to someone in a text message. It sounds pretty nice though :). Whenever I get my iPhone fixed I'll definitely try it out.

It's not (at this point, anyway) a true replacement for copy & paste for the iPhone, but it's a pretty good start.

How can this be a replacement if none currently exist on the iPhone? ;-)

So, I've installed it and it works great!
I used it on my public library's web site where my user ID is my 14-digit library card account number. I keep this number in eWallet (an AppStore app). I simply copy-n-pasted it onto the web site's form in my mobile Safari and logged in flawlessly!
In the future, I hope that this app adds the abilty to copy from non-editable text.

No offense was intended.
You don't need any special repositories for it... What firmware are you on?

Mine does not seem to work. I do not have the cut paste boxes as seen in the demos. I have reinstalled...is there something I need to do to activate this?

If you are running Intelliscreen, you have to go into Intelliscreen's options and enable it (under the "Performance" section). Otherwise, Intelliscreen disables it by default.

I did find one "bug". When composing a text message and you go to enter a number, a period, or other non-standard alpha character, Clippy covers the text message input area.
Here's what the text message entry screen looks like before I invoke Clippy:

Here's what it looks like after I bring up Clippy. Notice the text input area is now hidden by Clippy's "copy" and "paste" buttons...

Yes, of course. It just makes it challenging when you need to enter numbers or punctuation. ;)

So will it work on the viewmymessage passwords when you get one of these stupid things?

Doesn't appear to for me. Hate to be a wet blanket but not being able to copy from recieved text messages makes it, for me, almost useless. Saying "hey text me ur address" is still going to result in manual transfer to Maps.

It does if you use a third party SMS like BiteSMS. All you have to do is forward the text and it then appears in the text entry box where you are able to copy from and then paste into Safari. Works great for me. Much better than having to memorize the login/password.

In celebration of copy and paste arriving on iPhone after a year and a half of patient waiting, may I please post my first link on EiC from my phone? I'll keep it relevant: here's a good site describing all about Clippy: http://www.iphonehacks.com/2009/01/iphone-app-clippy-is-an-impressive-attempt-to-bring-missing-copy-and-paste-feature-to-the-iphone.html
Wow that felt good.

that's exactly why i had to stop using clippy. if i ever ended a text message with a "?" i would have to press the ABC button before i was able to press the send button. when you send 10k messages a month, it's just too much of a hassle.

Yeah, they need a more clever place to put it, that's for sure.

You can now use Clippy to copy text from websites. Look here (http://code.google.com/p/networkpx/wiki/CopyingTextFromSafari#javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:d=document;l=%27length%27;N=%27tagName%27;L=% 27toLowerCase%27;P=%27parentNode%27;r=%27replaceCh ild%27;S=%27stopPropagation%27;function%20y%28e%29 %7Bthis%5BP%5D%5Br%5D%28this.hh,this%29;e%5BS%5D%2 8%29;%7Dfunction%20x%28e%29%7Bs=e.target;if%28s%5B N%5D%5BL%5D%28%29in%7Btextarea:0,input:0,select:0% 7D%29return;if%28s%21=this&&%28s.href%7C%7Cs.onclick%7C%7Cs.onfocus%29%29retur n;a=d.createElement%28%27textarea%27%29;a.value=th is.textContent;a.style.width=this.clientWidth+%27p x%27;a.style.height=this.clientHeight+%27px%27;a.h h=this;a.onblur=y;this%5BP%5D%5Br%5D%28a,this%29;a .focus%28%29;e%5BS%5D%28%29;%7Dc=d.getElementsByTa gName%28%27*%27%29;for%28i=c%5Bl%5D-1;i%3E=0;--i%29if%28c%5Bi%5D%5BN%5D%5BL%5D%28%29in%7Bp:0,bloc kquote:0,h1:0,h2:0,h3:0,h4:0,h5:0,h6:0,dt:0,dd:0,l i:0,th:0,td:0,caption:0,div:0,pre:0,address:0%7D%2 9c%5Bi%5D.addEventListener%28%27click%27,x,false%2 9;). It's talking about using a different copy and paste iPhone program called hClipboard, but this works for Clippy too!
