Don't need apple's av cables?

OK so i looked around and around and i guess i can't find a good answer
I heard that ipod Touch 2g works with other AV cables besides the ones apple made and that all you need to do is switch the colors of the cable with that of the TV. Can anyone verify this? Will third party av cables lower the quality of the video?

and if anyone else is using third party av cables for ipod touch 2g or iphone , do you guys have any recommendations?

from what i understand this is true only with the universal dock....

i just got the apple ones, set me back 50 but no issues with them
