Welcome to EIC and congrats on the worlds greatest phone - THE iPhone...

Jailbroken or not? I'm not the best to ask this question - because I would say don't do it! You get lag, crashes an more - but take an look here (http://www.everythingicafe.com/forum/iphone-modifications/) for lots and lots of treads for jailbreaking!

My answer: YES

There are the occasional few who have problems, but for 90% of people who jailbreak their phone, they like it.

I've had mine jailbroken since the day I bought it and I've never gotten mad or anything. It took 3 minutes to jailbreak it.

There are tons of advantages. For one, look at the image below:
http://drumsplace.co.cc/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/img_0001.png

You can go from your stock screen to something you wouldn't even have ever thought would be possible. You can change almost every aspect of what you see on the screen. Fonts, wallpapers, and more, can be changed.

You also get some nice jailbroken apps to play with. Cycorder, for example, let's you record pretty decent videos. Qik let's you stream videos to the internet which I thought was pretty awesome. There are also some nice emulators for the GB/GBA, NES, Sega Genesis, Sony PS1, and more.

If you don't end up liking what you're doing, then you can simply restore it and everything will be back to normal.

One more thing...if you jailbreak it, you can unlock your iPhone to be used with any carrier which is pretty neat.

It's a personal decision, technically jailbreaking your phone will void your warranty, chances are if you need some type of warranty repair you can restore it back and be fine, but if not...your stuck. I jailbroke mine a week after I got it the reasons I did were:

1) Themes (not important cause I was fine with the stock iPhone theme)
2) MMS I was able to get swirlyMMS working and it's great
3) Landscape sms
4) sms forwarding
5) sms character count
6) an app that counts the number of sms sent and received to the phone (I do not have nor usually need unlimited text)
7) categories (app is a bit buggy to set up, but once you do, it's great turned 5 pages of apps into 2 pages and 1 page of weblinks)
8) SBSettings (toggles for wifi, ssh, bluetooth, 3G, GPS and brightness as well as adding a few apps to the dock, easily reboot, or power off or respring etc...)
9) Video recording

The fact that these can easily be done on a jailbroken iPhone means Apple could just as easily offer these apps in the app store or with a firmware upgrade. Apple simply chooses to deny their customers what they want. I knew the devices limitations when I bought it, and if jailbreaking weren't an option, I would still love the phone, I would just become frustrated with it a bit more often.

Uhh... Care to explain? I have yet to have lag....or have a major crash while being jailbroken...the only app that crashes sometimes is the notes app (maybe b/c i journal on my phone while ridin the tube to class) but i digress.

Some people have issues with it some dont...i love my jailbreak.no problems at all.

i look at it like this

if you choose not to jailbreak, you are prolly the type that hooks up with one girl, thinks you are in love, and ends up marrying her, only to find out years later that she was cheating on you and you are left unhappy and lonely because you finally realize the loser that you are.

if you jailbreak, you are the type of guy that test drives the car before you buy it, hooks up with as many chicks as possible, cheats on those dumb sluts, then when they break up with you you rub it in their face and give them hpv.

its pretty simple if you ask me, if you are looking for the most out of your iphone, then jailbreak it. i have jailbroken 100+ times and NEVER had any issue. feel free to pm me for any other questions or help doing so. you prolly should man up and just take the plunge, or else i'll never talk to you again, its worth it, trust johnny drama....

Good morning guys. Thanks for the responses. If I do, and probably will, I can always go back, right? I currently have the 2.2 firmware. With each new firmware update do you have to do another jailbreak and reload the broke apps?

Thanks. Is there anything that won't work from original after jailbreak?

You're going to get two replies here. People that haven't jailbroken their phones will tell you that you shouldn't, based on no personal exp. And people that have jailbroken will suggest that you do it, based on actual first hand exp.

I have done and highly recommend it.

i try to help where i can

Let me try this:

My old V1 went total crazy after 6 month of unlock and jailbreak...I thought it was the reason...anyway - now I'm legal all the way with a new 3G 2.2...but sometime I miss the JB apps!

If I go to give the JB a try - can I be 110% sure that a restore will "kill" ALL these JB files and JB/Cydia apps? I'm asking because I have read some crazy stories around, where people get f**** up after restoring!?

Thanks..

there may be a folder or two remaining in the depths of the root menu or something like that, but in order to view that, the iphone needs to be jailbroken again, so you are safe.

i have jailbroken TONS of times for myself, friends, family, and even perfect strangers. i have never encountered a problem that a soft reset, sync, or restore and rejailbreak will not solve.

hell i even took in my V1 iphone that had the top half of the touch screen stop responding. it was jailbroken and i restored it, they ran it through every damn test imaginable at the app store and finally just gave me a new iphone. i unlocked that one and sold it on ebay for like 500 bucks, bought myself a brand new 3g, and put some money in my pocket for my troubles.

Thanks! You know a PC has a BIOS system...you can mess up, but restore. Does the iPhone have a kind of BIOS?

Why does it leave this folders behind after an restore? Isn't it the same way when you're formatting an PC and restore the Windows system? These folders left behind is my "problem" - I don't trust them...sounds crazy - I know..but..
