You can send sms from aol im it shouldnt show up on your bill. But idk about receiving them.

I think BiteSMS (attained through Jailbreaking of course) allows the user to choose between using the SMS plan of the phone or another option. I use the SMS plan so I'm not sure of the options but you might want to check it out.
