What a piece of trash program. This app has been out for like a year now and I have seen no improvements.

Icons are all formatted hideously. Some are their original rounded corner boxes, while most are just squares, while others are the rounder corner boxes inside black squares. Just....ugly. Completely inconsistent with the way all Apple products are supposed to look.
Very buggy! I went through and tried to make a Games folder and it had me go through a list to pick my games. When I went back to the homescreen to see what it had done, about 25% of my games were still on the homescreen. When I went inside my games Games folder, they were in there too. Great.
After I installed the app, instantly all of my icons were in complete disarray, moved all over the place in an nonsensical fashion. Now I have to reorganize 8 pages of apps, which takes FOREVER. Thanks!
As I tried to run the app, it kept freezing. I couldn't even hold the home button to force exit or hold the power button to shut it off. I had to do a hard reset holding the power and home buttons for 10 seconds. The restart took like 5 minutes. This happened twice.
Loading time is too long! Who wants to wait 10 seconds every time you open a folder? And his option to decrease loading times is have Categories run in the background at all times using Backgrounder. So the 10 seconds we save each time in loading times we lose 10 times as much in battery life.
Scrolling through apps you have put in a folder is just awful. It doesn't "snap" to each set of 16 icons like your homescreens, but is just a constant smooth scroll. Did I mention that it looks absolutely breathtakingly awful?

You know what sucks the most? This is actually a really important app. With nearly 20,000 apps available, all of us are running out of space in our 9 homescreens and we need a categories-like app. How disappointing that our only option is this. Apple needs to make their own, functional, aesthetically pleasing categories app soon or we are all in trouble. We are in trouble because we can't fit anything else, which means Apple by extension is also in trouble because we will seriously slow down our App Store purchasing for lack of homescreen space.

Now I realize I couldn't do much better and that beggers can't be choosers, yada yada. But all that aside, as an iPhone user, the audience this app was designed for, I simply hate this app.

Wow, this is one of my favorite apps. I can't live without it. I have not had any problems with it. I feel totally the opposite of what your saying.

When I was jailbroken, I loved the concept of Categories, but absolutely hated the implementation. I know Apple did the developers of this program no favors with its rigid application structure, but the sheer mess of creating and managing the categories combined with the horrible lag involved with actually using them, I found them pretty much worthless to me.

Apple needs to GET ON THIS natively!

Why IS there a limit on the number of pages you can have? That doesn't make alot of sense...

I'm glad I'm not the only one who hated it.

Yeah "worthless" would entail that it doesn't hurt or benefit you either way. Categories is beyond worthless to me. It's offensive.

I actually haven't been jailbroken for over a year (PdaNet pushed me over the edge to do it again). And I remember trying Categories a year ago, hating it, and deleting it. One year later, I thought "Hey maybe they finally fixed that Categories app to a point where I could use it and not get angry!". NOPE, it's the exact same garbage it was back then. And if they haven't fixed anything in a year, I doubt they have any plans. Someone with a little more creativity in app design, either a third party or Apple themselves, needs to step forward. We need an app like this that works!

While I share your sentiments, I don't share your vitriol. Like you said, you can't do any better yourself, so you're not really in any position to call them "uncreative" or their product "garbage". Especially since it's free!

Since when can't something free be considered garbage? Take for example the car brand "Saturn". I could never in my wildest dreams make something 1/1,000th as good as one of their cars, I admit that. But as a consumer shopping for cars, I consider that brand garbage. The reason is, it doesn't do what it was designed to do, in my opinion.

People make free crap all the time. I don't think that just because it's free we have to bow to their feet and fake like we like and appreciate what they did.

No one's bowing down to anyone. I'm admitting that Categories is kinda crappy. I'm just wondering why you have to be so dramatic about it. It's not like this is their forum. I guess it's just fun to rant.

btw, my wife's been driving her Saturn for 10 years/110,000 miles with nearly zero issues. To each his own.

I'm a dramatic person I guess. But this especially gets me all wiled up since it's been out for over a year and they still host it and talk about it and support it but they don't improve it at all. Plus it makes me angry that they seem to have a monopoly in the Category-type apps and I feel like it could be done so much better by some of the other amazing iPhone developers I've seen. It seems like everyone else is scared or something to try and compete with it. I don't get it.

Plus, when I do go and try to choose an icon for your new folder and you try to scroll down through the choices, I almost always accidentally touch an icon, which is then chosen as my new icon. So I then have to delete the new category, recreate one, and try to choose an icon again. I've almost killed people during my frustrating attempts!

I agree with everything you just said. It kept freezing on me when I was organizing everything last night and I had to restart 4 times, and after the last time, half of my settings got reset back to how they were originally but the other half wasnt....it was weird. They ones that were reset werent really related either. How do you even add webclips to a folder? They say you can and even have an icon for it but when i go to add them to a folder they dont show up in the list of apps to add.

I have to agree with y'all. I really want to be able to use this app. I found that if you restart the SB after you create a folder and then after you add apps to it that it will not hang up. I know that it is extra work but it is what I have found to work.

Someone at school wanted me to try this out and it ****ING SUCKS!

1. It kept freezing my iPhone, so I had to do a hard-reset.
2. After playing around with it and respringing springboard, all it did was jumble up my icons. I had to spend an hour putting them back where I left them.

It sucks...stay away from it.

Dude, ME TOO, those exact same two things! WTF is it doing with the jumbled icons?!? When it did that, that's what made me finally say "To hell with this!"
Reorganizing eight pages of apps is not fun on the iPhone...

Yeah.

I like having several pages full of apps. I know where everything is, and I have them categorized in a certain way, so I think I'm fine where I'm at.

wildonrio

Yeah pretty much the only reason I WANTED categories is so I could have more than 9 pages of apps, is there a hack to get more than 9 homescreens?

There's something that lets you put 5 rows of apps instead if 4, I just forgot the name of it.

It's the FCSB: Five Column SpringBoard.

It's the FCSB: Five Column SpringBoard.

That works I guess. More than 9 homescreens would be better though, I think a five column springboard would look pretty cluttered.

Isn't there an upper limit to the number of apps regardless of what tricks you use to rearrange or categorize them?

I'm still undecided about Categories. I love the cleaner screens, but it is buggy. Opening the folder does take a little long, also I've found that it will not add a certain App to a folder & it names two apps with the same name. Very confusing.

Still deciding to keep or delete...

I almost always accidentally touch an icon, which is then chosen as my new icon. So I then have to delete the new category, recreate one, and try to choose an icon again. I've almost killed people during my frustrating attempts!IYou can actually Edit the icon without deleting the Category. I discovered this after doing the same thing.

No, it doesn't look like it.

Seriously, why would you have that many apps?? There's gotta be some that you can remove.

There are 27,000 apps available and only 72 spaces on our phone. That's 0.02% of the selection. Is it really that ridiculous for someone to complain about running out of screen space, especially since 72 apps would only take up about 2GB of space on an 8/16GB phone?

Catagories is a great concept, but it just needs to be worked on more. :/ Its just so buggy I hated it and then I removed it. Now my pages are just meh. I wish you could insert a new page inbetween others so I don't have to keep moving them around.

I think you can add like two more pages by dragging icons i think you can have 11 pages if im not mistaken. Do a search for it i have done it before i know i had at least one extra page and i remember having a second extra one also i think. Do a search. I personally like the categories my problem is not freezing up its how do i sync without making a mess.
