So, I have had no problems with my 3G since I bought it. That has been about 5 months. Well, last night, out of nowhere, I noticed that the home button was acting funny...taking its time taking me back home and what not.

About 30 minutes later, the entire screen went completely black and nothing could change that. I held down the power button and I can't even turn it off!! I can't make or receive calls...when the phone rings, I can hear the ring and feel the vibrate, but cannot see who is calling due to the screen being completely black!! When I plug it in to charge it, it makes the little charging sound but then again nothing happens.

I called apple and they told me..gasp..I need to have a repair. Well...I am 7 hours from home for the next 10 days and cannot get to an apple store until I get back. Needless to say, I am so very angry.

If anyone out there has a trick or two, please let me know what that might be.

Remove SIM card, install into back-up phone, go to Apple get new phone.

Did you try holding the home and powerbutton to reboot(softboot) it that way?

Or more drastically restore it, but then you will lose all your info unless you know how to use diskaid or ssh into your iphone.

If you have your information backed up on a computer that you brought with you try restoring in iTunes. This might be a temporary fix if nothing else will work.

Be very careful with anything you try. Luckily though, you are under warranty, so, one way or another, you will have a working phone.
My only suggestion is to hold both the home and power buttons for about 6 seconds. then Hold the home button for about 4 seconds and then connect the USB cable while still holding Home. If it doesn't turn on after about 5 seconds, then the next step it to repeat the process, but instead of releasing after 6 seconds, hold till the apple shows up and release immediately. It's either going to boot, or it's going to go to the connect to itunes logo, meaning you need to restore and then restore your profile and then data and media.
Your iPhone arbitrarily dying is not a good sign though. In my quest to try and fix my version 1 iPhone from the unknown IMEI and ICCID error, I saw that there was a LOT of 3G owners out there that their phones bellied up on them, seemingly for no reason. Most were jailbroken and unlocked ( figures), few were stock and died.
Maybe you could take it to a best buy in your area for an exchange? Otherwise, I would request that they send you a return for repair box, and have them repair it and ship it back to you. It's very likely that it will be done with a 72 hour turn-around time at the most.

This usually happens to me if I don't respring or restart my iPhone at least once a day, due to the massive amount of apps I open.
