I was fortunate enough to be selected as a beta tester for Starplayr for the iPhone. I thought I would let you guys get a sneak peek.
Three different companies combined there efforts to develop this product.
NiceMac LLC http://www.nicemac.com - Makers of StarPlayr
Millard Software http://www.millardsoftware.com - Makers of uSirius
Geeks Tool Box - http://www.geekstoolbox.com - Makers of StreamSmart
For a beta product it is very stable and full of features:
Album Art
Lyrics
Buy from iTunes or Amazon Directly
Favorite Channel List (Shake to Choose Random Favorite)
Support for HQ Streams (wi-fi only)
Works over Edge
Sort by Genres
There are currently about 250 beta testers and the plan is to submit it to the App store on January 31st. So hopefully it will be available about mid February or so. Depending on the app store back log.

How much? It works if you are already a Sirius Subscriber?
I have to say, I've been with Sirius for over a year now and this merger definitely diminished the quality of music that I've gotten. The only reason I keep Sirius at this point is because the radio in my car came disconnected from the antenna (the antenna is in my windshield) and because it's an aftermarket windshield, the warranty is voided. I refuse to pay to have the radio fixed when I pay $170/year for satellite radio.

Do not know the price yet. No additional fees from SiriusXM. It uses your current online streaming account (Sirius Online or XMRO)

Sirius/XM Radio is not available in Hawaii. So, this works off the internet and you still have to have a Sirius/XM subscription?

Yes it uses the internet. You need a subscription. Sirius has $7.99 a month online only sub that does not require the purchase of any hardware.
You need a Radio ID to sign up for XM's version.

I could not be more polar opposite than you on this. I hate commercial radio... the ads are so demeaning and annoying. Basically... I will not listen regardless of what they are playing. I can only listen to so much public radio even though it is commercial free. For me... Sirius and XM (we have both in various cars) is valuable because offers commercial free content... not because of the actual music.
I do think that they will have an ongoing severe biz problem. Right now, their value proposition is that they can deliver music almost anywhere... regardless of cell or internet reception. As internet coverage covers the globe... the value of satellite radio diminishes. However... at this point it is too far away for me to worry about... so I subscribe to both XM and Sirius... which of course is in the process of becoming a single service.
I am really looking forward to this application!

Sirius and XM have already merged and as a subscriber to Sirius I now get the combined Sirius/XM broadcast: is this not true where you live? You also state that you like Sirius/XM because they are commercial free: in fact, many of the news broadcasts are relays of regular TV broadcasts and contain ads.
I agree with you that satellite radio is in for problems: if you use it mainly for music, you are at least as well off using an ipod or similar player and of course then don't have to pay subscription fees. I have been aware for some time that as I listen to certain channels frequently, there is only so much music in the satellite library and I again start hearing the same pieces in the same sequence.
XM and Sirius receivers are not compatible. The newly merged company has two sets of satellites... one for XM, one for Sirius.
The companies have legally merged... but the two businesses have not completed merging yet. For example, I was a subscriber to both XM and Sirius. The two billing systems have not been merged yet... so there are still two separate bills. In my case... my single Sirius radio has a lifetime subsription... so it is not a huge issue. However, since I cannot list my Sirius receiver as my "first" radio... I have to still pay the higher initial price for the first of my XM radios. They claim that once the two billing systems are merged, then my "lifetime" Sirius radio will be my fist subscription, and then I will only have to pay the "additional radio" fee for the 2nd and 3rd receivers.
Also, the programming is not totally merged. They offer "best of XM" or "best of Sirius" as cross programming... but the content is not the same. If you have both XM and Sirius receivers, you will get different content... with some overlap.
Regarding commercials... that is the exception, and it is easy to avoid channels that do not offer commercial free programming. For example, I refuse to tune into any XM stations with the CM designator.

That's interesting. I was a Sirius subscriber and now get Sirius/XM combined programs, though I am not sure I don't also get separate Sirius broadcasts. I will check when I am next in my car for a spell (the weekend, probably). The more I hear Pandora, and now Slacker, on my iphone, along with all the stuff I have imported into it from itunes, the less I see the need for Sirius/XM (I am not a fan of Howard Stern, so what other good reason is there?)

Correct.
- Our two Prius cars have XM... and now we get a some Sirius stations
- Our Jeep has a Sirius receiver... and now we get some XM stations
However, the channel lineup, and station availability is not the same on Sirius and XM. Neither set of satellites has enough bandwidth to carry the the full set of XM and Sirius stations.
I wonder if over time they will prune more stations... until they send the same programming over both sets of satellites. Also... at some point they may decommission one set of satellites... but they will have to wait a long time to avoid very unhappy customers who get left a satellite receiver that gets no programming.
As I said earlier... their biggest biz challenge for XM/Sirius is a new world of ubiquitous internet blanketing the planet. It will take time to deploy... but as more of the world gets covered... the advantage of satellite decreases. For many people... the simple 3G network is enough now. The biz challenge will just continue to escalate at 4G rolls out or especially as WiMax provides very fast internet over huge geographic areas.

Have you noticed that when the play the station ID they'll say "Sirius xx, XM xx"? They simulcast the stations on both birds, but you don't get it all. Even the "best off" is a crock and only gets you a few more channels of the other service.

I had problems for a little while but I use it everyday and 95% of the time it works great. There is an option to do a speed test which I always change it to 130 and it runs well. The screen has to be kept on like you cant put the phone in sleep mode. I just have it hooked up to my battery charger throughout the day. Sometimes you have to delete the lineup cache in usirius or delete orb from the pc and reinstall. It sounds cumbersome but to be able to listen to sirius all day makes the day go a lot faster at work :)
I found out how to get this running from EIC Forums, if you do a search for it anyone looking how to hook it up and trouble shoot it can figure it out. Here is a helpful link:

I bit of bad news on the XM/Sirius side.... They are going to be upping their prices in March and one of the things to go away is internet streaming radio for free. They want to charge an extra 3 bucks a month. So that means that to use this app, if it works like the internet players, you'll have to pay an extra fee every month. Pretty lame on XM/Sirius' part.... losing money and charging whats left of their customers even more... what a good way to get more customers...

Do not write off Howard Stern and SiriusXM just yet. Mel Karmazin is running the show and he knows how to get it done. There are two companies that are interested in purchasing SiriusXM though, one of them being EchoStar. I have been a Sirius subscriber since September of 05 and I tried listening to terestrial radio and I just cannot, the two do not compare and for me to lose SiriusXM would be devastating.
I think Mel will pull another rabbit out of the hat though and get it done. Tuesday February 17th we will know everything we need to know. SiriusXM has to come up with 41 million to pay off a debt, Echostar's chairman wants to buy that debt which in essence would give him ownership of SiriusXM. Sorry that my info. is all over the place just making sure I hit every issue that is an issue at this time.

Go Mel.
I have been a Sirius subscriber since June '05 in our Jeep with a lifetime subscription. I have also been a subscriber to XM in both of our Prius Hybrids since '06. Like you... I cannot stand to listen to terrestrial radio anymore... and if I have my way, I will never tune to one again. The advertisements are so insulting to one's intelligence... I would rather listen to road noise than put up with another radio ad again.
Having said that, I think that satellite radio is going to face an almost insurmountable business challenge over the next several years. Their current technology differentiator is delivery of content nearly everywhere. Their business challenge is ubiquitous internet... and the fact that new cars will be introduced which are internet enabled. I believe the progression of technology integration will follow something as:
1) AM radios only (50's)
2) AM/FM radios (60's)
3) AM/FM/Cassette (70's)
4) AM/FM/CD (90s)
5) AM/FM/CD/Aux-in ('00s)
6) AM/FM/CD/Aux-in/Stereo bluetooth input/SAT ('00s)
7) Internet enabled cars ('10s)
Today's introduction of Aux-in and Stereo Bluetooth-in allows cars to have the first bleeding edge of internet connected music today. On my trip over the coast range this weekend... when the SAT signal became unusable (common in mountain/forest areas)... I plugged in my Iphone to the Prius' Aux-in, and listed to Internet commercial free radio, then Pandora, then our 100GB iTunes collection streamed into our car from our home server using Simplify Media. I was able to get great streaming commercial free radio even in an area where SAT was unusable. Of course... in fairness SAT currently delivers content in other areas where there is no internet connectivity.
The problem with "Aux-In" is that a very narrow segment of the population (mostly youth) will put up with the inconveniences of wires and portable devices. However, with the building out of wireless internet infrastructure with 4G and/or WiMax... the internet will expected to work everywhere... and cars will be shipped with integrated internet connectivity. In this environment... XM/Sirius will have a very difficult challenge... because their content alone is not compelling enough to keep people paying for a SAT subscription.
I expect that XM/Sirius will face very difficult challenges. They absolutely need to re-invent their business in a fundamental way... otherwise, they will not be able to survive another decade. In the mean time... I will continue to enjoy their services, at least until I get new internet connected vehicles.

Rumor is copyright problems, which surprises me unless this is a lot different than their existing players for mac, pc, and windows mobile.
Although, I think all those are free and maybe this is an issue for Sirius. Maybe they are requesting that if NiceMac is going to charge for it, then they have to pay for copyright usage???? Total speculation there. I'm still hoping for this to be released soon. Now I'm mad I wasn't in on the beta.

Updated: NiceMac Press Release
NiceMac is made up of 4 members all of which have always been die-hard fans of Sirius and XM. Over the years we have individually contributed to the ad-hoc player offerings available for Sirius XM internet content. Last year, we all had the fortune of crossing paths at which time we decided to band together and focus on helping deliver Sirius XM content to subscribers everywhere and anywhere.
Update: As of yesterday, the uSirius StarPlayr Application for iPhone still had a status of "In Review" with Apple. Later in the evening we became aware that the application was not rejected, however could not be approved at this time.
As fans, we are committed to continuing to work with all parties involved as necessary in any capacity required to see this product to market. It is our goal, as it has always been, to release this application at as low of a price point as possible, if not free of charge.
We thank all of our supporters and users of our current offerings, as well as those who have been patiently waiting and Beta testing while we work to bring uSirius StarPlayr for iPhone to market.
Sincerely,
The NiceMac Team

This may be old news, but I found that I can get Sirius XM thru an App titled Pocket Tunes ($9.99). The sound quality isn't the best, but not too bad. A word of caution - you will need to log into Sirius Media Player during the process and you need to know your username and password exactly. I goofed and literally had to remove and reinstall the app to get a second chance.

hopefully it will help.
Also - I didn't realize I had one username and password for "My Account" and a separate one for listening online. Be sure you can login to media player on your computer before trying it in Pocket Tunes.
Also - you can only be logged into media player in one place at a time. So don't be logged in on your computer and try launching it on your phone at the same time. (I was told)

A word of caution - you will need to log into Sirius Media Player during the process and you need to know your username and password exactly. I goofed and literally had to remove and reinstall the app to get a second chance.
Here is a link to show how to install.

Hope this helps.
Heard of this yesterday and I have it working now. Easy to follow directions.
Go to Sirius.com in the App's Web section
Click on Media Player on the Sirius website
Log In (Have to have Sirius online listening subscription)
Choose station
Press Now Playing in the App
Press the "+" to add the station to favorites
Pocket Tunes will automatically log you in to that station every time you choose it from your favorites.
Awesome!
Sirius better not try to block this. I was about to cancel my subscription when I heard that Starplayr was denied.
this app is awesome! works great.. I would think this was approved by sirius right?

I have a problem shelling out the cash for this when the official application is supposed to come out soon. Anyone have any insider info on when that will be. I am still crushed about what went down with Starplayer, but hopefully the official app is somehow associated with them since Starplayer was so good. Any news anyone????????

I just bit the bullet and bought Pocket Tunes so that I can play SiriusXM and it works great!! My question is has anyone figured out a way you can still listen to it if you want something like Hue Clock running? The minute I push the home button it disconnects. Thanks

I'm an old xm radio subscriber. I was told today that this does not work with xm radio users. I can listen to xm radio online okay. Pocket tunes said you have to log in at sirius.com not xmradion.com.

I think that's a bit harsh. Certainly, a strong negative. But it does work over 3G and does buffer much better than pocke Tunes.
It also shows the name of the artist playing.

If the No. 1 thing you use Sirius for is Stern.
And No. 2 is NFL.
And you don't get either...the app sucks for you.
And I am still PO'd that regular Sirius doesn't offer the play-by-play for baseball games through XM.
ya no stern is bad..any info on if they are planning on adding the stern channels in the future?

I doubt it. They don't want people to get him for $3/mo.

Are you not getting Sirius NFL because you're on XM? I'm listening to Sirius NFL right now... works great. No Stern bites.
I've been listening for about 20 minutes... no buffering at all right now on 3G. Pretty cool.

No I have Sirius. I'm saying that SiriusXM said there won't be NFL or Stern on the iPhone app.

Not playing NFL games sux. I wonder what they plan to do with channel 124 during a game. If I remember correctly, I thought they aired a game on 124 (along with other random channels). I guess they'll block those too.
Putting NFL games and Stern would pretty much make their Stilletto line and other mobile lines obsolete. Maybe that's why they did this.
Either way it stinks... hopefully they'll add later. But the app is free so I doubt it.
What a horrible merger for us Sirius subscribers....we lost the Nfl to xm, been waiting for this app for a while and they leave off Stern.
I really thought there would be class action suit I originally subscribed for the NFL and they removed it half way through my subscription year. Now it's a monopoly and the only choice is to go back to the crap known as Terrestial radio...not much of a choice eh?
Ughh

I must have been under a rock somewhere. What I understand from other posters is that no Stern and no NFL games broadcasted on the iPhone app.
But this one has me scratching my head... you're saying that Sirius is no longer broadcasting NFL games on their radios/online because they lost it to XM radio?
I just installed the XM App, and learned that traditional (basic) online access is not sufficient to use with the iPhone app. I called XM and they gave me a complimentary lifetime premium package since I have lifetime plans on two XM radios. I also have a lifetime Sirius package... so if that wouldn't have worked, I would have called Sirius and tried them.

NFL did not go to XM, what are you talking about? Sirius holds the NFL contract and, after getting it, never lost it. They own XM, so XM isn't going to buy it out from under them, because it is the same company.
NFL may possibly be offered on BOTH next season (while MLB is NOT) but Sirius did not lose the NFL contract.

Have Sirius XM on my phone, Already had premium online subscription so it worked flawlessly. All my favorite channels are on there (Octane, Faction) and it works over 3G. Only bad thing is that it DRAINED the battery on my phone in less than a few hours (using external speakers). Just wish it worked in the Background!

I also wished it had a mechanism to defeat the sleep settings of the phone like other music apps.

Yea I got all excited hearing about this one and was contemplating signing up again just to listen to Stern, but now forget about it. Sirius is just Pandora without Howard.
