iphone wifi question

hi i have a iphone 3g and i dont have the internet payment option thing.

so i use my wifi at home, but if i use it outside of my house or any wifi area for that matter,

will the iphone just connect to the internet with out asking me if i wanna connect and get charged for it?

If it is not free wifi you will know, it won't just connect. At the least you will be directed to a website to sign up.
If it is free, there is no problem.
