ALL Contacts Erased!!OMG!!

Oh my god, all my contacts have been erased after syncing with windows vista for the first time. This is 400+ business contacts lawyers, friends, women... this is a unbelievably bad. I can literally go broke because of this. What the hell is going on?

When I synced with my pc I checked the box saying; Sync contacts with Windows contacts under the info section. To me this means update all contact info between the pc and Iphone NOT erase all contacts on the Iphone and replace with a single stupid icon with the pc user name and no contacts.

There is no contacts on my pc as it has recently been reformated (thanks vista)

Hopefully you read THIS (http://www.everythingicafe.com/forum/general-discussion/friendly-geek-reminder-backup-39949.html#post381448) thread. Always a good idea to keep a backup especially when it seems to be this costly. It is the holiday season coming up, I suggest you treat yourself to a nice external hard drive.

I always keep a vCard of all my contacts stored on several different drives just in case.

All Might Not Be Lost!!! Have you tried backing your phone up in iTunes from a previous iPhone back up when your contacts were still present???

plug in your phone use a backup point buddy. I sync my contacts through outlooks. Best way to go for me.

I would suggest just as the others have and try to do a restore from backup and see if your backup had most or all of the contacts on it. Normally when my Contacts sync I am asked if I want to merge or replace them. Very odd that this option wasn't offered.

Rooster, what phone were you using prior to the iPhone? Is it a possibility that you can retrieve your contact list from your old cell phone? When I replaced my first iPhone 3G I didnt have my contact list backed up and ended up coming home and manually put in each contact that I got off my LG Voyager. Took awhile but it was well worth it.

mine where randomly erased yesterday, but I luckily had my old sim card to load them off of again

Thanks for the help guys but they are gone for sure. Called tech support and nothing could be done. I can sync with "google contacts" so I am going to do it that way from now as a double back up.

I went to go backup my contacts today and lost them all. It asked if I wanted to merge or replace and I choose replace, assuming it meant replace my google contacts with my iphone ones. I was wrong, it meant the other way around. Would be nice if it was a bit clearer, or maybe I didn't read it clearly enough but am almost positive it did not tell me what contacts would be replacing which.

Strange, I thought all sync programs favor the desktop, cloud, exchange, etc. over the iphone. That is to avoid accidental erasures. So when you get a replace option, it usually means replace the info on the handheld....

That could be true, I rarely if ever sync and it could be just because I was in the mindset of, I have stuff on my phone that I want to backup so replace the stuff in my google contacts. Either way I'm keeping a good ol fashioned pen and paper backup now as it's 100 reliable as long as I dont misplace it :)
