Hi everyone,
I just jailbroke my iPhone 3G for the first time yesterday. I was running FW 2.2 prior to this and everything went well. Before doing the jailbreak, I watched some youtube videos that explained the process. One of them said it's safest to run quick pwn on a clean 2.2 FW (not already jailbroken). So my question is, when Apple comes out with a FW update (2.3), what do I do? Do I install the update in iTunes thus unjailbreaking the iPhone so I have a clean version of FW 2.3 running before I rejailbreak a few days later when the Dev team comes out with quick pwn 2.3? Or do I just wait for quick pwn 2.3 to be released and rejailbreak on the already jailbroken iPhone?

Thanks!

What I always do is restore to a new device, update to the new firmware, and the jailbreak. I have always heard it's better to start fresh everytime.

I second what Kenneth said. It only makes for the cleanest possible install.

Restore without using the backup? So you have to add your contacts, media, and apps store applications, and re input your settings every time every time Apple comes out with a FW update? How bad/risky would it be to restore from a back up and then rejailbreak?

it doesnt take that long to set your phone up again. Especialy since your going to spend a lot more time customizing it.

Ok. I've been wanting to switch the computer that I sync it with anyway (from a PC to Mac and i couldnt get the itunes library to transfer to a different OS),so the next update will be the perfect time to do that since I have to start from scratch anyway. Thanks for your help.

One more question. Is there anyway Apple can tell that it has ever been jailbroken after restoring as a new phone?

Not that I'm aware of. If you are taking it in then just go into settings> general> erase all settings and media. Also reset network settings. This will take an hour or two so make sure you have your phone plugged in and you won't be using it.

When the next Apple FW is released, I'm going to restore as a new phone and then use quickpwn. Resyncing my music and apps should be easy since they are already in iTunes, but how to do save and sync my bookmarks and contact lists? I have iPhoneBrowser, is there a file in it I can save or is the file in iTunes?

I'd also suggest to un-categorize your apps then do back-up before you restore.....

Otherwise, your apps would be hidden and you have to search through EIC to find out how to get your app/icon back....

yes this is very important. Everything that you have in categories will be hidden if you do not remove.

How about backing up Cydia apps, etc?

I don't use the categories app, so that's not a problem. But you got me thinking, when you say back up do you mean back up with iphonebrowser or back up in iTunes? Isn't it pointless to back up in iTunes if you are going to restore as a new phone each time you rejailbreak?

I meant to do the back up after you un-categorize then back-up before you resotre...

The reason why I said that is.. somehow iTune back-up your phone infomation with category, so if you don't back-up again before you restore, it will have missing icons (icon that's in category) even you are in a stock phone.

And even you re-sync your back-up back to your phone, your iTune back-up is info with category, so your phone will be still missing..

I hope this make sense...

However, since you don't use category, it's not really your thing to worry about ;)

Ok, I just sold the computer that my iPhone is sync'd with. This is my plan, does it sound ok?

I'm jailbroken with FW2.2. I'm going to wait to restore until Apple releases FW 2.3 and rejailbreak. I have already added my music, apps, and videos to the iTunes library in the new computer (MacBook). I sync'd my contacts with Google contacts before selling the old computer. I also copied my notes file with iPhonebrowser. Once they release the next FW, I will restore as a new phone to factory default (do I need to have FW version 2.3 saved on the computer or will it automatically restore with the latest FW?), then rejailbreak, sync my media and contacts in iTunes, and then override the blank notes file with the backup file into the root directory using iPhoneBrowser or Diskaid. Then recustomize :)

Does this sound good?

Sounds good to me. You will have to download 2.3 in iTunes and then just select restore.
