My screen is locked !

Hi anyone who can help. My name is Dave. I have had my I phone for just 2 days and have broken it already !
Has anyone experienced the same problem,,,,,any ideas on how to fix it?

My screen has frozen. First it went black. Itried to shut it down with a view to restarting it. I held down the on off button, the red slide bar came up and I slid it to the right, but it stuck and just shows the red slide bar at the right and the word cancel at the bottom.
Now the screen just does not respond to any touch.
I tried removing the sim.attaching it to a usb, and cleaning the screen but nothing works

Press and hold the home button and the power button together at the same time until it shuts off.

Press and hold the home button and the power button together at the same time until it shuts off.

And make sure you hold down the two buttons till you see the Apple logo.
