So Linux has been ported. Geeks everywhere rejoice. But what if Android takes off? The guys that did the Linux port are close to having an Android port for the iPhone. Would you try it out if you could restore back to Apple land if desired?
I'm thinking I would...
Also, what would this mean for the possibility of Apple going open source with the iPhone? If there's genuine competition?
I'm getting these notions from a Slashdot article I saw today:

I would 100% give it a shot.
I'm very fond of the Android OS, just not the device it's currently only available on.

Exactly. If they get a proper port, it's going to get some pretty crazy support, I'm guessing. I think this is going to be a huge topic around here in the coming months...

Linux on the iPhone - No. Not really interested in that.
Android on the iPhone - Sure. I'd give it a shot.
Open Source iPhone - Yes. Yes. Yes. Forget Android.

If Android's ported over successfully, what would we do about the keyboard?
The Android OS, currently, doesn't have a built-in on-screen keyboard.

What other open source is there beyond Linux?
And Saverino, not to worry about the keyboard. The dev team geniuses would certainly fix that.
My prediction, Apple will NEVER go open source.

I would be more likely to try an Android port than JB again. In fact, I'd be an early adopter.

It's open source so surely someone would develop an app that supports an on-screen keyboard. That's the beauty of Android. As long as it was a stable port I'd 100% give it a try. I'd try Linux too. I used to exclusively run Linux on all of my computers.

BSD is open sourse www.freebsd.org (http://www.bsd.org) I'm not sure but is Sun OS opensource?

pretty sure Mac OSX runs a mach kernel with a dash of BSD, freeBSD & NetBSD sprinkled in there. From what I understand the phone is pretty much running Mac OSX.

a agree with everything you said, but not this, apple is not one "to give in"
they decided that we dont need firewire 400 anymore and they took it off, who cares that we all have firewire 400 external hard drives, not them, ahahaha
sure, android on the iphone, why not

I don't think Apple will follow the Open Source trend (maybe one day when Steve Jobs is no longer at the helm). Steve Wozniak most likely would have supported an open source iPhone. Steve Jobs (Control Freak) no way. Apple has shown us many times that they do not follow the crowd. I think it has more to do with the man (Steve Jobs) than Apple as a whole. Mark

OSX is based of of UNIX. Linux, freeBSD, Net BSD are derived from UNIX but there are differences. Generally if you can operate on the command line of one them you can do all of them. Coming over to OSX from Linux was very easy for me since I was already familiar with how a UNIX based system worked.

Not to sound like a No0b or anything but. . .

-But how could OpenSource improve the iPhone:gasp:
Open source would allow one to completely rewrite the phones operating system, essentially making it a blank slate. Anything would be possible from there. No longer would the dev team have to hack around the current file structure & code limitations imposed by apple.

Sounds dangerous:foot:
-I definitely couldn't handle it

Android on the iPhone, sign me up. Running two different Os's would be sweet, Kind of like a Bootcamp way of doing it would be nice.

I always thought Unix based OS is a lot more stable than any other OS's out their. That was the advantage. No?

For this topic, I'd like to say, it really depends on how APP store or Android market goes.

Open source iPhone as Lincoln said but since I think a snow ball has a better chance in hell of surviving than that occurring I would try Android on the iPhone.

No - like my Apple firmware on the iPhone...maybe if they put Vista Ultimate on it...yeah...what the...I'll try it out....
I'd give it a shot. They really need to kick the interface up a few notches though. Most of the appeal of the mobile OS X platform for me is the UI.

Vista??? Are you serious??? That would mean daily security updates and a host of problems. Mark

oh, android, another dreaming one. but google with apple? just dreaming...
such coolest and best ever phone couldn't exist, becoz iphone is still designed as most guys' req. truth~
I am not impressed by the G1, or Android, although there are little things I like about the interface, it's still doesn't beat out the iPhone.
And while the iPhone is not perfect, you will never see this happen..

This is the new display model at the Walmart down the street. Didn't last a week, apparently.

If I could dual boot it and try both, of course. That would be a reason why I would jailbreak again.

android on the iphone? definitely! what some people dont understand about android that its not about the hardware (not entirely), or the interface, or anything like that. its all about open source. and what does that mean? it means you can get absolutely anything you've ever wanted on the iphone. copy/paste, mms, video recording, everything thats been "missing" from it since day one. all that would be in the past when anybody could just write an app, or change anything they want on the phone.

I would be down to trying it out at least...I'm all for a UI that has a large customization following. (aka XDA-Developers) Open source makes it much better too. :D

Just a side note...I haven't seen too many displays of any kind of phone lasting long. People abuse them terribly and I wouldn't give the stereotypical Walmart shopper too much leeway either. ;)
