As uncharacteristic of Apple as this looks remember when the original iPhone was announced in January of 07 then a couple of months later it was revealed that there would be a 'glass' touchscreen rather than a 'plastic' one? Correct me if I'm wrong please.
No, you're right on that one. But that was months later. This is about a week and a half after announcement. I don't think it's going to happen.

Another look at the new 3.0 feature set relative to the whole product line:
http://www.tuaw.com/2009/06/11/iphone-3g-s-in-depth-why-the-s-means-more-than-speed/
good find! i just think they made it iphone 3g s because like both v1 and 3g phones had only external hardware and i think they finaly wanted to do internal (and they did) and thats i think why they call it 3gs

Not quite following you there, but I think the point of the article was that a lot of the "3gs-only" features are probably that way because they require the additional CPU speed and memory, or the additional features of the camera hardware.

Voice Control (iPhone 3G S)
By simply holding down the Home button, you can give the phone voice commands to dial a contact, dial a phone number, or to control the iPod. You can also get audible feedback about what music is currently playing, and switch to other songs or playlists, without having to switch to the iPod, change music, then switch back to the application you were using previously.
well i guess that's why they had to change the force quit.

Accessibility (iPhone 3G S)
Though many may think that the accessibility features are only for users with disabilities, there are some other valid uses for them as well. For instance, you could have the phone read text from a web page or an eBook out loud, so that you can focus on other things while listening. VoiceOver might also be handy to announce an incoming text message while you are driving, so that you don't have to take your eyes off the road to know who the message was from.
Yeah right... how is voiceover going to say "WTF r u goin 2 do"?

I can't understand why anyone would want a matte backing if you are going to use a protective case anyway. I know a matte backing alone will not be enough to protect my iPhone and I would want to keep it enclosed in a protective case at all times.
Yea, good point JW. Otterbox already ordered. ;)

And can you imagine how hard it would be to get a case on a matte backing. You would end up breaking your case from forcing it on to the phone, breaking the phone in some way, or seriously scratching the matte backing up. I decided if they did have a matte back on then I probably wouldn't use one because that's what my current case is like. I am glad they kept the same look so I can keep my case and use the same size screen protector.

I agree iPhun. I was thinking the same thing about how difficult it would be to put on a protective case and remove it, especially those tight fitting cases where you have to slide the iPhone in.

I have an incase slider and love it. I have one with a soft touch finish and it is nice, it gives a good grip to the phone and I have dropped my phone in the case and don't have any damage to the phone. Also their cases hold up well because mine doesn't look bad at all.
Here is the one I have: http://www.goincase.com/products/detail/slider-case-cl59068
I was thinking of getting a white one since I got a white iphone this time around, but they don't have the soft touch in white and I prefer the soft touch look and durability. And some antiglare screen protectors I bought from apple which came with 2 so I will have a new one for my 3GS.

Great iPhun! You are just the person I wanted to ask because I plan on purchasing this incase slider. I heard stories from people using this case that it is very difficult to fit on the screen protectors with the incase slider. I guess the case fits so snug that even the screen protector makes it difficult to slide on. Did you find that so?

I wouldn't say it is hard to get on with a screen protector. The only place where I had the slightest problem was in the bottom right corner where there is the slightest bubble and I think that was my fault from touching it there when I put it on. The process isn't as bad to put the screen protectors on as you would think, it's fairly easy as long as the screen is clean and so are your hands. You should never need to touch the sticky side and slowly lay it on the screen from top to bottom(or vice versa) and let it suction itself down. I don't know where my camera is or I would show you how it all looks(I use my iphone camera more than a real one :laugh2:). I think on the new one I am going to take the old screen protector off of my 3G and see if it will fit with the incase on cause as of now it looks like it would. To sum this all up I would never use a different combination, I like these too much.
Here are my anti glare protectors:

Thanks iPhun. That reassures me. Yes, I have placed my order for those same screen protectors from Apple.com. I had read that some people found it easier to first slide the bottom part of the incase slider on the iPhone first then apply the screen protector and then attach the top portion of the incase silder.

No problem  Yeah since I won't need my old one I think I'll play around with different ways to put the protector on so I can get my 3GS one on perfect. It probably was the bottom portion that made that little bubble stay the way it is today. I don't even know if I can call it a bubble cause it doesn't even seem to have air in it.

I predict that Apple will change the software look of the iPhone in future versions. I believe they will get rid of the cluttered icon look on the home page and go with an appearance and function more like their Snow Leopard OS, with icons along the bottom. I think this will come about when the iPhone also can run background multi-tasking.

Can you imagine in the next few years? With my new iPhone 3GS, I don't plan to be eligible for a subsidized upgrade until March 2011 and by then I will just wait for the Summer 2011 iPhone. I'm sure by then they will have OLED and multi-core graphic processors, as well as a newly designed iPhone.

I know JW! I havn't even got this years yet and I already can't wait for what's next. I'm sure the 2010 version will be great and shall be even greater by 2011! By 2011 we should see LTE on a lot more stable ground and can you even imagine the speed increases? 512RAM, 1GB Capacity, OLED it's practically endless! Every year will be better than the last, I'm just glad to be a part of it all.

You think you are going to get the 2011 iPhone, but in reality when they release they new one next summer you will be trying to find how to get one subsidized  But I can't even imagine what we will see in the phones to come. In 3.0 we got almost ever highly requested feature. I guess some possibilities could be background processes, photo and video editing features, and beyond that I can't think of anything. I hope in a 3.x update we get more search options in spotlight for google, wikipedia, etc. like the pre.

Oh also, for everyone purchasing the new iPhone 3GS be sure to save your packaging, box. Keep everything in pristine condition including your new iPhone 3GS so that in a year or two when you upgrade you can sell it for a good price which will help defray the cost of the next generation iPhone. I see people now selling their iPhone 3G's and even V1 phones and getting some good deals.

I haven't decided what to sell my 3G for, but I have kept all the packaging and up until a week or two ago the plastic was still on the top part of the box(just the way at&t cut it) so it's in good condition. And since I paid $299 for my 32GB I hope to at least cover that if not make a little more.

Well since the iphone and pre are both using 600mHz processors and they doubled the RAM on the 3GS I wonder if we could see 3.1 or 3.2 having multitasking. Of course it will be another one of those 3GS only features which I am fine with since I am getting one  Although I am sure they would rather wait until 4.0 to make a bigger deal about it when a whole bunch of other features are announced, they do have a closer competitor this year that can do multitasking.

Push took longer because they threw out their original plans and designed a whole new system to accommodate what they knew would be a heavily used service. I think they have a little more motivation because of the pre and that's the main selling point on that device. If apple can pull it off on the iphone that would steal a large part of the pre's market. Like I said, maybe in a 3.X update especially since towards the end of the beta period we started hearing rumors of limited multitask support. Give them a few more months and we just might see it.

I'm not saying lots of people switched to the Pre from an iPhone, although there are some, I just think some people might not have wanted the iphone because it didn't have multitask. But if the iphone perfected multitask (and apple won't release until it's perfect) people would see a very established phone, the iphone, has that capability now so why go with this small piece of plastic, the pre. Also if they limit it to the 3GS which I think they'll have to, they would see a growth in sales for a while. I haven't really been paying too much attention to the pre(too much iphone stuff going on), but it really doesn't surprise me.

I have been hearing the most complaints about the Pre in regards to these issues:
Poor signal strength and dropped calls, less than stellar battery strength, keyboard hinge issues that reset the device, and screen issues with dead pixels and yellowish discoloration. Also, the screen with its plastic-like surface is more easily scratched.

I find it funny that when the iphone had some of these problems everyone made a big deal about it, but the pre is having more and I haven't heard about it once. I am reading now a little about it even though it's no where near the iphone complaints. Well there's proof of why apple doesn't like real keyboards because there's too many parts that can have problems. And just look on youtube for people trying to scratch their iphone screens because it's near impossible.

Augmented Reality with the iPhone. I really like how you can bring/overlay 3D virtual figures right into our real world environment using the iPhone's viewfinder. The implications for gaming especially as the iPhone develops with improved CPU/GPUs will be enormous, not to mention other applications. I love that little Darth Vader character.

He was running that program just from an iPhone 3G. You might want to hold off though. This augmented reality probably won't be developed for the iPhone commercially for another year or more. What I posted is from a UK post-doctoral researcher in parallel tracking and mapping and augmented reality who developed this program. I doubt it will be available for the 3GS. Maybe in 2010 or 2011 there might be some applications. It is up to you of course. I can think of a lot of reasons to have the 3GS. :laugh2:

I'll just get the one this year then next years model, and so on. The schedule my family plan is on will allow me to steal their upgrades every year and they don't care about getting new phones :tounge:

I'm going to buy the 2010 iPhone (The Year We Make Contact). I'm going to jailbreak my 16GB iPhone 3G, which could fetch a nice price being that the 16GB 3G is already being discontinued (while supplies last at AT&T).

Apparently there is a new app using Augmented Reality although it is for the Android device at the moment. They are working on it across platforms though.

Yeah, I plan on getting the black Monolith model in 2010 as well.

Hehe, I was kidding iPhonewarrior...well partially, it will probably be sold in 2011 for the SS Type-R Model or something. :D

I'm not getting mines till October :(
Not too fussed about getting in line and surviving all the hype. I've heard from a really reliable source that the new iPhone OS 4.0 will have the ability to teleport you to new locations, by using other people's geotagged photo's.
You heard it here first...

The fingerprint and RFID technology are pretty cool, but I'm not gonna like the haptic screen if apple goes with that... the present touch screen to me is perfect.

Either way, I hope, if this comes out, it isn't for 2 or 3 years. I'm tired of buying a new iPhone once a year!

I can't even think about the next generation iPhone yet. I just got the 3GS and still loving it. It would be like looking at a new girl after I just met the girl of my dreams.

I know dude.
Work has been really hectic and I just needed a break, hehe.
Once I got my iPhone I decided it was time to sit back and chill for a while and not be so frantic all the time about cramming research time between the work and family schedule.
Things will pick back up again and we can start posting up new news soon enough. Thanks for the bumps, lol. Funny this thread is still being brought up every now and then, it's been fun.

My guess is that it won't be released until shortly after WWDC next year...and my hope is that it'll be a more interesting upgrade than the 3GS was for us 3G users. I found nothing in it that made me scream "wow I need that"...video? Meh - jailbreak does enough video on the off chance I dont have my flip with me...compass? meh, already have old school GPS unit in my car...so really nothing I needed.
Honestly the only feature I've heard even tossed about that would make me run out and snag it:
Slide out physical keyboard. Same feature that might allow it to compete on an enterprise level. I've gotten used to the touchscreen, but still type much faster on my blackberry. Apart from that - more traditional remote wipe process, like blackberry - corporations don't want to leave the onus on the user to know to do that if they lose their phone.

I heard a new one is coming out before Christmas, as Apple is trying to break the yearly WWDC iPhone announcement cycle.

you kinda skipped over the "twice as fast" feature.

Almost everybody skips over that little improvement. I guess it's just not "sexy" enough to warrant a mention.
Now, a matte back - that would be revolutionary. :ok:ok

If it comes out the same time next year as the 3GS did this year it is timed perfectly for when my Orange contract ends :D

I don't see any reason why Apple would break from their 1-a-year release schedule. Seems to be working great for them. And I think the 3GS has enough speed and features to keep it king until 2010 no problem.

I wouldn't mind if they didn't release a new model until 2011. I know it isn't something iPhone ver 1 and 3G owners want to hear though. :)

IMO, any truly innovative tech firm will have a replacement model in the works by the time it releases a new device.
YMMV
