ya know, the best way to go about it, really, is to make your own. I'm in the holiday spirit. Give me some ideas of what you'd like to have as a tone and I'll whip them up for ya. That does mean you'll have to install them via ssh, but I can walk you through that, too. It really is pretty easy.

What would you like to have?

I think I'm going to use the 24 ringtone as my new text message sound. WOW I just noticed that my I and my S key do not have the magnification pop up when I push them...

Ok here's your chirp. All you have to do is unzip this file and ssh the "sms-received1.caf" file into this directory: /System/Library/Audio/UISounds/

Have you ever used ssh to browse your iphone files and directories?

what does ssh stand for?

SSH = Secure Shell

Everything you need to know about jailbreaking and customization can be found at this link: http://www.everythingicafe.com/forum/iphone-modifications/what-jailbreaking-is-and-how-to-do-it-27443.html (Thanks to Lincoln)

But for SSH'ing here's the skinny..

SSH - SSH is a means of transferring data, or files, between to devices. In the case of the iPhone, SSH can be installed by installing OpenSSH in installer, and accessing your iPhone via a SSH client on your computer. This will gives you access to your iPhone's drive.

Should you be using a Mac, use either Cyberduck (http://cyberduck.ch/) or Fugu as your client.
If you are using a PC, use WinSCP (http://winscp.net/eng/index.php)

Connecting to your iPhone via SSH:

First make sure that your iPhone is connected to the same network as the computer you wish to connect to the iPhone with.

1) Open up your SSH client of choice, and open a new connection. In 'Server' or 'IP Address' you will need to input your iPhone's IP. To determine this:
• Go into Settings > WiFi.
• Find your wireless network, and tap the blue arrow next to it.
• In the IP field, look at the numbers displayed. This is your IP.
Now input the IP Address into the server field in your SSH client.

2) If prompted, select SSH as your connection type, or set the port to 22.

3) In the Username field, input the word root.

4) In the Password field, input the word alpine

ughhhh i need to contact my isp for my wifi password!

uhm.. I don't think they are going to be able to provide that for you. Did they setup a wireless router for you when they setup your modem? They usually don't.. they may have, and if they did.. I really doubt they set a password for you. That's very insecure. A wireless router password is something you and only you should know.

Actually, I just responded to another member who was looking for a way to connect his PC to Iphone with the USB cable, so not using wireless. I recommended using iphonebrowser. You might give that a try. I think I used it briefly back inthe day, and if I remember correctly it did the same thing as WinSCP.

hmh.. ok just so we cover all bases here. Did you unzip the file I posted for you, or did you try to drag and drop the zip file? If so, the file needs to be unziped. Right click on the original file icon (download it again from above if you need to) and select unzip. The file you're dragging into the uisounds directory should only have the extention .caf not .caf.zip. I think that might be your problem?

or you did unzip it.. let me know. We're gonna get this working damnit! :2cool:

Jamie you've got to give me more information here than just these short sentences. What do you mean "drag 2 of the same file names in"?

Where are you clicking on the .caf?

Where are you clicking on the .caf?

sorry

the file i got from you (Sms-recieved 1.caf) will not over write over the existing Sms-recieved 1.caf... the iphonebrowser would just keep loading so i would have to close it and start over..so instead i renamed your file to Sms-recieved 11.caf and to my suprise it loaded on perfectly.

from there i clicked the 11.caf and right click renamed it BACK to sms-recieved.caf

now my tri-tone just doesnt work. lloll god!:tounge:

ok got ya.. let's try this. Delete the sms-received1.caf from the uisounds folder first. Then drag in the exact file I gave you into the uisounds folder. Don't rename it.

it must look exactly like this: sms-received1.caf

yup modding is so much fun once you get the hang of it!

I've attached a zip of some of the stock BB ringtones. The one you're talking about might be in there. Give these directions a try and see if you can get one going!

Converting mp3 into .caf is pretty easy to do in iTunes. Here's how:

In iTunes you need to set the import setting to aiff. The location of the import settings tab as changed with iTunes version 8. I use a mac, so I'm not sure where they are now for windows. My best guess is they're still under the edit menu (at the top) > preferences > advanced > import settings.

Change the import setting to "aiff"

Once you set that, open your audio file with iTunes. Right click on it select open with iTunes.

Now once the file is in iTunes it should have been converted to aiff. Right click on the file in iTunes to see it's properties. If it's not in aiff format, simply right click on the file again, in iTunes, and select "convert to aiff"

You want to drag that newly converted audio file onto your desktop. From here you will rename it to one of these tones you want to replace:

sms-received1.caf = Tri-tone
sms-received2.caf = Chime
sms-received3.caf = Glass
sms-received4.caf = Horn
sms-received5.caf = Bell
sms-received6.caf = Electronic

We've already used Tri-tone, so lets go with Electronic (cause that sound sucks).

So, you're newly converted file let's say it is called bikehorn.aiff will now need to be renamed sms-received6.caf

yea, you need to be jailbroken to access the directories and files on the phone.

quriat: I gave all the steps for ssh in this thread.
