i don't think it really matters-unless your iPhone is nothing but a status symbol.
Your iPhone is still going to work the same as it did before walmart. Apple is still going to support the iPhone and push out updates just like they did before Walmart. If anything this gets the phone in the hands of more people and can only help development and progress with the iPhone. The RAZR is a different story. It was a piece of crap. The iPhone is not.
I don't get everyone's preoccupation with Walmart. It doesn't kill anything. What's wrong with making a product affordable to someone who may not have otherwise been able to afford it? That's definitely not a bad thing in my eyes with the economy in the state it is in.

I just feel that when apple mass produces even more than they are now to meet walmarts demand for the iphone more problems might come up and could bring a bad name to a great product.

I'm just happy someone referenced my article. :2cool:
My guess is that by the time the iPhone 3G 4GB finds it's way to Walmart, Apple will offer a high end iPhone. If not, then I see your point and there are risks with mass production. Just ask Motorola. The RAZR was the in-product, but became ho-hum when everyone had it. Doesn't make the iPhone less rockin', but does change public perception. It's already changed yours!
EDIT: Sorry, I just see you guys both beat me to it with the RAZR reference.
How people can be bothered by this confuses me to no end.
We all got in a big argument over a certian member of this community stemming from this topic....I hope that conversation doesn't rear it's head again.
No. Big. Deal.
Death of the iPhone. LAUGHABLE notion, seriously.
The flip side of this is that more adoption equals more accessories and applications - and that also means that they can be cheaper as well due to lower production costs for accessories (due to higher run rates) and more of a user base to sell apps to (meaning that each copy need not be as expensive). Wal-Mart selling the iPhone will greatly accelerate this. A broader userbase also means more people here on EIC -- and that can't be bad. :)

It won't make much of a difference except to people who really love and appreciate their 3G iPhones. To me, it doesn't really matter as long as the new Nokia N97 is coming out. Totally excited and can't wait to grab one. :D

I agree JoeT and as said elsewhere in this thread, Apple will probably come up with a high end phone or maybe even 2 higher end levels and those that want to and can afford it will but them. Wal-Mart has made many products affordable to those on very tight budgets.

there is no need for the high end phone, the fact that walmart is selling this phone is a good thing, that is what apple wants, a unit in every hand, if this is a status symbol for you, then wow, a phone that does this for you, you need to rethink your self image, if you want to spend more money on something then get the white phone, other then that, i want to walk down the street and see a unit in every hand, that is just me.
i dont buy **** to be better then people i buy it cuz i like it.

I agree but having a broad range of a product available low end to high end if demanded by the consumer benefits us all.

i agree, but i say that it does not , matter where you get it, if the product is high end then it is, and the iphone is, regardless of where it is sold

haha.. ya know.. makes me wonder, with cydia and the app store offering an app for just about anything you can think of, why hasn't anyone developed a simple cut & paste plugin? (Have they and I just don't know?) What's the big deal, it can't be that hard to do?

For those that are really getting bent over this, it is rumored (http://www.iphonealley.com/news/analyst-4gb-iphone-3g-likely-to-have-other-differences-than-storage) that the 4 gig will possible have fewer features to distinguish it from the rest.

Merely a fact. My iPhone (with all its flaws) will still be able to do everything it can today once it starts selling at Walmart. Nothing will change for me. Might change for some dude who can't afford a $200 phone, though.

Well, that won't be fair you know. Why is it that someone would be holding a 4 gig iPhone 3G that is different from someone who's holding an 8 gig iPhone 3G for instance. That would be total chaos man. Oh and also, what features are they going to exclude? It's not like they have anything special that other regular, cheap phones don't have (except for the touch screen). It would be a surprise if they add MMS and Copy & Paste features in the 4 gig one haha. I'd laugh my butt off.

dave I have to disagree. The 4gig rumor not only makes good business sense, but it definitely sounds like something walmart would be antsy for. The only thing that could cast doubt is Apples desire to control EVERYTHING involved with the phone. Walmart might get fed up with it and the negotiations might fall apart.

for some reason i tend to agree with you. although walmart has been getting more high end phones of late.
My guess is that by the time the iPhone 3G 4GB finds it's way to Walmart, Apple will offer a high end iPhone.
Why would you think apple would release a higher end phone then?
Not that I wouldn't like to see what they would have to offer in the higher end phone but just curious as to why they would release one then?
This thread is holding a great argument over the release of the next phone, truly entertaining and informative, check it out, escpecially the last couple pages:

Hayes, I too agree but what is in bold will be the key. If anyone knows anything about Wal-Mart, it is that it is totally their way or no way. It will be interesting to see what happens.

You continue to make snipes at me in every thread you post in which is fine. You forget who stood up for you when OJ was making biggoted remarks about people of your ethnic background that is fine to. Why though do you continue?? Are you trying to get me going??? Your comments show that you didn't even understand the principle behind the "wall charger issue" was never about money. I will leave you with this thought. Keep throwing your money away on items that should come in the box and the only place you will ever be able to shop is Wal-Mart. Mark
P.S. My mentor, friend and extremely wealthy businessman once told me. Every dollar you keep and invest could be the start of your next million. I know that is a bit out of your league and above your thinking but try to think about it anyway. If you don't understand not giving away money for nothing. Come to South Florida and watch people with XXL bank accounts haggle over a penny's worth of undue charges.
