View Full Version : 2.2 Seems To Be a Disaster

Being a developer, I cannot get over at how bad an upgrade 2.2 is. To date I have found 3 bugs. Simple bugs that should not be there!! Is Apple really that incompetent that their testers are useless?

Bug 1: I have already reported in a previous post (the SIM LOCK issue).

Bug 2: If you set the keyboard click on, it works fine no issues at all. When you type away, you hear the clicking sounds. Reboot the phone and turn the keyboard clicks off. Type an email and guess what? Yup, the keyboard clicks are still on, even though it shows in the settings that they are off. Reboot the phone and the sound goes away.

Bug 3: Dial a phone number but do not type in the area code, but only the 7 digit number. You should hear some message telling you that you have entered an incorrect number. Nope, the phone will totally freeze on you. Hitting the "End Call" button does nothing, as the phone seems to be locked. Hitting the home button will take you back to home, but the phone is still in a call. Rebooting the phone seems to be the only way around this.

My phone is jailbroken and I thought it maybe because of that. But I tried the same tests on a friend's un-jailbroken 2.2 phone and the same results.

Come on Apple, sort your act out!! This is just incompetence.

Hyperbole much? Your observations would be but minor annoyances in an otherwise really great, lag- and bug-free firmware update IF they were actually bugs. I cannot reproduce #2 nor #3 and frankly can't even be arsed to try #1 at this point since your tone is so unswayingly negative around here.

We all have problems from time to time. How about presenting it like "hey, what's going on here" instead of "APPLE SUCKS" from time to time? Seriously, it gets soooo old.

I'm unable to duplicate Bug 2 or 3 as described i your post.

I cant save images anymore without them being completely blurry.

Other than that everything else is fine.

2.2 is the best update I've seen yet, but what do I know, I'm just a user, not a developer.

That is a known 2.2 bug that hopefully will be fixed, otherwise has been one of the best updates since 1.1.4.

Do tell me, what I.T. technologies do you specialize in, that you're such an expert on development life cycles?

Ravman,

I can duplicate Bug 1, though it doesn't appear as you describe. When I reboot the iPhone, the keyboard clicks are off, but when I reactivate them, they're still gone. There seems to be some variance as far as the behavior of Bug 1.

I cannot duplicate Bug 2 at all.

I don't know if I'd go so far as to call 2.2 a disaster...

What sample size of iPhones are you using?

FYI, I'm using an iPhone 3G 16G on fw 2.2, jailbroken and without Winterboard installed.

ravman

When you reboot the phone, do the clicks come back on?

My phone is the 16GB running 2.2 jailbroken (via QuickPWN). I also have VOIPOVER3G & MobileSubstrate installed (for Orb over 3G).

I also have VPN configured so I can connect to my companies network (both UK & US). But I'm not sure if they would cause any issues anywhere?

I also tested on a co-workers iPhone. He has the 16GB, but it's not jailbroken or anything. So it's just a regular phone running legit. I can replicate the issues on his phone also.

Do check my last say 50 posts and show me where this constant "trolling" as you put it is going on? Please do show me?

If you have an issue with my postings and cannot handle other people's opinions, I suggest you stay away. No one invites you to say anything.

I do not know everything. I also do not cater to trolling, which is what you constantly do here and are actively doing with this very post quoted above.

Stop trying, FOR ONCE, to cause a big stink and maybe we can get to the root of these problems together. Until then, I have nothing more to say to you.

Until you troll again.

I deleted that because I shouldn't feed trolls. I'm not going to find all your troll posts because I don't have to. Take a poll, see if I'm alone here.

I have no problems with your opinions, only your delivery, and you know this.

Im not going to completely agree with psylichon, but ravman, you do constantly seem to be a bit negative about everything.

As for the bugs, I am 99% bug free with 2.2. There are no bugs that are constant, but just small things that happen every once in a while.

ravman

Still waiting for evidence of this "constant trolling".

I've just checked my postings since 10/01. I don't see any constant trolling there?

Were you one of the guys on Bush's team that said Iraq had WMD's? Then had nothing to back it up?

I don't think it takes any specialization in I.T. technologies to determine if there is a bug or not. I can't reproduce bugs two or three either. 2.2 so far has been one of the best updates for me, if not the best.

ravman
12-01-2008, 07:33 PM
Of course it doesn't, I totally agree. But when as a project manager I see such simple bugs coming out of a company that boasts its' products are far more superior than Microsoft's, then I think they deserve a piece of their own medicine.

There is no way I would allow systems under my watch to be released into production with those kind of bugs. It would make any project manager and his team a laughing stock of the town.

Don't place TV adverts saying Microsoft Windoze sucks, and then start pumping out code with so many bugs.

Theres an easy solution. If you hate apple and think they suck and are incompetent. Don't use their products. It's a free country. We all have a right to use the products we want. You obviously do not like apple or their products, so why do you use them?

I have not encountered any of these bugs. I have had a great experience with 2.2, and I would call myself a rather advanced user.

However, that is not to say problems do not exist with it.

I only offer this sentiment: you know it's a great product when there's not much more to complain about than some simple bugs or omissions fixable in software.

Ask the G-Mobile T1 users and the BlackBerry users and the Xperia users and the LG users what they find their phones lacking; I think you'll find a lot more stories about what their phones can't do or don't do well, all of which in my opinion outweigh the relatively miniscule nuances and nuisances about the iPhone.

the only problem i have found with 2.2 (still) is that safari sucks. actually since 2.2 all my internet apps constantly crash. i have always thought safari sucks, not just on the iphone but in general. imo it is the worst web browser out there. back to 2.2 issues, is anyone else having the worst problems with internet anything since 2.2?

Might have something to do with the fact that my company has since adopted the iPhone and it's my company phone. I was quite happy with my company AT&T Tilt and had in fact returned my own 3G iPhone (data charges were a rip off). But then I had to hand in my Tilt and take an iPhone. So no, I do not have the right to chose any company phone that I want to use. Like I have no choice on my company laptop.

When it comes to firmware upgrades, we have no choice but to upgrade (company policy). I for one would rather hold back and wait until the bugs have been fixed, but it's not my decision to make.

When you're trying to use a phone for business and the darn thing is not working, due to silly bugs. It gets extremely frustrating. I cannot be constantly rebooting the phone over and over, to make it work.

Have any other stupid statements to make? Feel free and go for it.

It wasnt a stupid statement, thanks. You never explained that so how would I know? I'm not a mind reader....

But hey, you don't want to use the iphone, then get your own personal phone for personal use.

It must be tough to work for a company that covers your cell phone. boo hoo for you

I was doing a lot of surfing on my iPhone the other day in Best Buy. I wanted to check out the prices other retailers were selling their wares for (mainly Sony stuff). Safari would just freeze and after about 5 seconds, return me to the home screen. I rebooted and it still happened. Not sure if it was the sites, or the phone? This kept happening and in the end just used my friend's Samsung Blackjack to surf the net. No problems at all.

I like the google search window on the top right, but only when Safari is working.

I got home that night and restored my iPhone again, still same Safari problems :frown:
