This bite (http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2007/02/23/3g-iphone-on-track-for-early-08/) suggests that a European carrier is claiming a 3G iPhone ("iPhone v2.0") Q1 of '08.
If true, this has an interesting implication. Either Apple Inc. will hose its own countrymen by releasing a 3G iPhone in another country first, or Apple Inc. will hose its own countrymen by releasing it in the US first, thereby antiquating the slower, EDGE-equipped iPhone v1.0 within 6 months of its release.
I am, therefore, skeptical. But an interesting read nonetheless.

Hmmm... 2 days later and no posts. I'd have thought this whould've generated a little buzz. As well.

let's all hope that 3G will be available on its release date. Why pay for a data plan if it is going to be edge slow.

Im excited that Apple will make a 3G version of the iphone. Although I wish version 1.0 would have 3G, I will definately get ver 1.0 and then I will most likely upgrade to ver 2.0 when its released. (Yes, this will cost me a small fortune, much to the dismay of my wife). :laugh2:

We don't know that yet. It definitely is a natural progression, but there are several issues in the way. I'm still skeptical about a near-future 3G iPhone. Regarding your wife, just do what I plan on doing: sneak out, pay cash, and after a week declare you won it in a contest! :tounge:

LOL, that's a good idea, it reminds me of the saying; "It's easier to ask for forgiveness than ask for permission". :laugh2:

This thread reminded me of a good article I read regarding the iPhone and 3G. It gives reasons for Apple's decision to go with EDGE and offers some thoughts on future iPhone versions. Check it out, it is a good read.

Having a computer in my work truck with Verizon wireless broadband service, i'll mostly be using my iPhone for Googlemaps, most of the time.
For some reason, our network blocks www.googlemaps.com
I've tried that, http://maps.google.com, i've tried just clicking on the link from www.google.com. STUPID! Being in a vehicle, trying to find specific addresses all day, it would be the most useful site, but it doesn't work, for some reason. I can even browse to porn if I so desired (desired to lose my job, that is..lol) but it won't load googlemaps. STUPID!
So, anyway, my iPhone will be used for that, mostly. Hopefully that is nice and fast, even though it'll be on EDGE. I'm sure having developed the software for the phone, google has streamlined it fairly well.
Although, when Steve demonstrates it in the keynote, if you listen, you'll notice he states that's he's using the WI-FI connection for that......hmmm.......
I swear, if I get it, and googlemaps is unusably slow, i'll prolly turn around and eBay it. lol
