View Full Version : Slower response after 2.2?

I downloaded the new software this weekend. My iPhone is running much slower, apps, text response time, email, basically everything. I had read about the improvement and I'm not seeing it. Actually much worse.

Anyone else having the same trouble?

Suggestions on what I should do?

Yes, I have a suggestion. Re update. Something went wrong. The new firmware is ten times faster and more responsive than the last several...

Something is really***** up your update, thats for sure. Manually download the 2.2 update from apple and restore in iTunes with the SHIFT and Restore key combination and select the location of the update you've manually downloaded. In that order you will start clean, if you just click on restore, you will have that slow thingy agian.

Oh, and if you dont know the location of the firmware; http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-5778.20081120.Aqw4R/iPhone1,2_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw

I did not see any faster response after the update except what I normally get after a hard restart for a while. I think 2.2. is about the same as 2.1 was. Certainly not 10x unless I am missing something.

My internet has been much slower, but an amazing thing happened, I had my first clear conversation. It was amazing to use the Iphone as a phone..........

Mine (Original iphone) is much faster both in no lag time and the internet are the fastest speeds I have ever gotten using speed test.

I will tell you what I did that made a huge difference. At first I downloaded the 2.2 upgrade and restored from a backup. The result was no change from the sluggish 2.1. Than I took the plunge and listened to an Apple Genius's advise and restored again "AS NEW". Made a huge difference, this phone has never been better in every regard. Yes it takes a little longer and is a little work but it worked for me.

I am thinking that I might have to do a "new" setup as well. I saw slight improvements on battery life(added about 45 min of usage), but still have lag opening settings and other apps.

I'll report back when I have complete it tonight.

So if I understand you correctly, now your response time in opening menus / applications etc has gotten faster. How much time did you spend with the phone since you did this? Because my experience is that often initial speed gains diminish over time.

Btw very interesting, I might have to do it as well if this does work.

Question: If I restore "AS NEW" what about my apps? Do they restore after I sync music, etc. with iTunes? If yes, what data is "restored" prior to syncing? Most of my relevant data that is not backed up via syncing to iTunes is stored on my office network via Exchange so what would I lose if I restored "As New"?

Well, setting the phone up as "new" means that you are NOT restoring your profile backup back to the phone.
You will have to setup all your mail accounts again, configure your network connections, etc.
All Notes, Pics, internet favorites, and other stuff will be lost if you don't save that info somewhere else off the phone.

I restored as new once I realized that the update did not give me that option. My phone is much much faster than it was in 2.1

That is almost not worth it. Especially considering that we will be getting these updates every other month, and considering how my google mail syncs super poorly with my iphone. I am so not ready to do this every other month. I am not doing this unless the phone comes to a crawl. But I would like to see how it worked for you or others. So those who did this plz keep us posted.

All I can tell you is that I have owned both Iphones, been the first one to upgrade software every time it comes out. Since I went this route last week my phone has never run better. Not a single blip!!!

I understand the setting mail accounts, configure network connections, etc. but what I'm unclear on is what other stuff (beyond those mentioned in Hawk's post) will be lost. Also, how do I save pics, internet favorites, etc. other than by backing up via iTunes ? (I run a stock 2.1 3g, no "mods"). Any guidance/advice would be appreciated.

Your pics should be saved on a folder on your PC. Itunes will sync those over if you point it in the right direction. Any pics that are your "camera roll" can be taken off the camera (before the restore) by simply go to "my computer// iphone camera// save as (in your picture file) this is for a PC. I have no idea how to do it on a Mac. In regard to your favorites, they will sync over via Itunes if you have that selection checked. This will happen along with your email accounts, music, videos etc. Hope this helps.

It does help, thank you!

I will check it out tonight when I hopefully get the chance to update to 2.2.

Mac
Open iPhoto and (on Leopard) it should just go grab them. Mine does at least.

Well, I restored last night after backing everything up ( You tube favs was a bit of a pain in the butt,) the only thing I lost was my bookmarks, and I think that was because I tried to sync with the PC's bookmarks, and they were erased.
As far as performance, I can say that both Settings and SMS take about 1 second to open. Granted, SMS doesn't have anything in it anymore, but Settings used to have bigger lag. Keyboard comes right up when I am entering text on a webpage. Everything is MUCH snappier than before.
Next will be battery life. My phone averages about 3.5 hours, and after initially updating to 2.2, I added on about 45 minutes to that, so 4.25 hours. ( I also noticed that I never got the 20% warning and know that I was very close to 10%...)
So as of this morning, I will be putting the phone through it's paces using WiFi, 3G, GPS, video and games to run down the battery. I'll report back in this post when I either get a warning, or I am ready to go to bed tonight around midnight. Whichever comes first.

ok, since you asked:
USAGE: 1 hour and 59 Minutes
Standby: 7 hours and 32 minutes
Call time: 5 minutes
Data Sent: 355KB
Data Received: 9MB

Battery shows about a 4th missing. Used a mix of 3G and Wifi for browsing the web. Brightness is set on auto, with the slider above the tn in the word "Brightness".
Location services off, and when WiFi not in use, it's off as well.
BT is also off. Mail is set to manual.

This is about right for where I think it should be. being about 2 hours for a 4th of battery equalling a supposed 8 hours total. It maybe slightly lower than what I truely expected, but the day's not over.
Everything still seems snappy, and still no lag problems yet.

I haven't noticed changes in speed or battery life since updating to 2.2. Actually just yesterday I had a full battery all day with using the phone often and I thought that it couldn't be right. I reset the phone and it then showed red in the battery bar. Something must have gotten held up and kept running but didn't show in the battery. That sucked because I went from having a full bar at 8pm to 20% at 8pm with no charger until 11pm. 3G doesn't seem faster in Chicago but then again I don't expect much because it is so spotty here anyways even though the chart shows full 3G network. Nice AT&T.

I have had the false (or stuck) full battery issue with both this and a prior 3g, and on both it occurred on firmware 2.1. A hard reset resolved it each time, but I could never figure out how or why it happens.

Alright, just got the 20% warning.

USAGE: 4 hours and 28 Minutes
Standby: 17 hours and 26 minutes
Call time: 16 minutes
Data Sent: 462KB
Data Received: 11.9MB

This is about where I was before, so no change in battery life for me. However, everything is still snappier with very little lag.

I do this test again tomorrow and post stats as I can.

Could you do the test with more phone usage? I know that people use more than 16 minutes a day of calls especially if it is used at work and for personal use. I think your data is good if you are using the phone strickly for internet/data use but what about for both as a phone and data? Just throwing that out there.

I'm not a big talker, so the best I can do is as follows:
Usage:4 hours 7 minutes
standby: 10 hours 31 minutes
call time: 30 minutes
data sent 132KB
data received: 3.2

Today, it was a lot of texting, about 2 hours of iPod use with about 1 hour of MotionX GPS Lite (great friggin free program for you 3G users) during the last 40 minutes. Also a couple games and such played by my nephew.

I have about a 5th of the battery meter showing (it just changed from about a 4th), so I am going to put it on the charger now.
All in all, slight battery improvement, but in comparison to my V1, this battery life suck the big one. I should be getting at least 6 hours out of it BEFORE the 20% warning.

I crashed Safari once, but I had 6 pages open, all with very image heavy, so I know that my cache file was full. Other than that, I haven't had a problem with Safari.

So I thought I would run the same test as you to see how the battery life is with the new 2.2, here are the results:

Time since last charge:
Usage: 3hrs, 40min
Standby: 1 day, 12 hrs
Call Time: 25 min
Data sent: 757kb
Data received: 8.3 mb

Haven't gotten the 20% low battery warning and I am at 1/3 battery remaining. I am going to keep the phone unplugged until it gets down to around 10% remaining and I will repost the stats. I thought this was pretty good battery life since I have been texting a lot too and checking sports scores. Anyways, let me know what you think. :2cool:

I never let my battery go down very low and I love this update so far (as far as the new stability of safari) but I do notice a snappier opening of SMS and email apps, as well as a new lag in typing
