As a seasoned iPhone veteran. I never thought I would say this. The BlackBerry Storm is now my phone of choice. The BB Storm is the most well put together well thought out phone/PDA I have had in years. The interface is packed with features and easy to navigate. Having Cut & Paste, MMS and a serious camera/video device are welcomed features.

I have been loving this phone since my purchase yesterday. The only thing that could have been better is the included software. iTunes intergates all aspects of sync into one program BB desktop manager does not. I was truly impressed with opening an email attachment (a photograph) that immediately opened in full screen crisp and clear view. The Storm's screen is large, viewable and great to use just as is the iPhone's screen. You will find no cramped congested feeling as with the HTC Diamond, HTC Touch Pro or HTC G1.

I also like having to press the touch screen down to open a selected choice. No more inadvertent opening of a function do to errant screen touch. The sound quality of the storm during music playback is just as good or better than the iPhone.

Seperate email icons on the home screen prevent sifting through many different email clients to find which one has new mail. Instant messaging via chat clients (GTalk, Yahoo IM, Windows Live & AOL) is in real time. There is Flickr and Facebook and a host of other useful apps factory loaded.

The call quality is clear, clear and loud just as is the speaker phone. Email notification and ringer volume is also loud enough to be heard while in pocket. There are three different keyboards to suit whichever is to your liking. The battery is user changeable so is the Micro SD memory (8GB's included).

RIM may have been the last to come to market with a touch screen but they took their time and got it right. The Storm is a wonderful phone/PDA that offers all that Windows Mobile Devices (OS not made for touch screen), Palm Devices (OS outdated), Android Device (OS has promise but still young) and The iPhone (OS great but lacking common features) does not. The jury for me is still out on no wifi but Verizon's EVDO network has been fast.

I won't be giving up my iPhone anytime soon (just because I feel a connection with it) but it has certainly taken a back seat to The Storm. In my opinion RIM has scored an out of the park grand slam, home run with The Storm. Mark

There must be quite a few liars out there, then.

Interesting...you've got my curiosity piqued mark, i will have to check out the storm firsthand when i get a chance...my biggest thing would probably be the touch screen, it would have to be nearly identical to the iphone's in responsiveness, clarity and just plain velvety smoothness...we shall see.

The Storms screen is a bit different from the iPhone. You highlight the desired option with your finger turning it blue then press down (feels like it's spring loaded). I was surprised at the clarity and brilliance seeing that the pixel count is much lower than the iPhone.

You will love it if you get one. It also feels very good in your hand. I am not bashing the iPhone. I am just comparing the two. Right now in my mind the BB is on top. Lots more serious features. Mark

BTW: To be. Completely honest in my comparison. I have to say the iPhone Safari browser is still KING of the mobile browsers. My G1's Opera browser comes close but nothing like Safari to date. The Storm's browser is pretty sad no doubt about that. I'm posting from my iPhone. Mark

Thanks for the info Mark. The things that give me pause are your comments about the browser (it is so important to me!) and even more so, the lack of WiFi. I am in an area without decent EVDO or even 3G coverage. I MUST have WiFi.

You're backwards.

The Storm has a higher pixel count and more PPI than the iPhone.

Storm = 360x480 in a 3.25" area (184 ppi)
iPhone= 320x480 in a 3.50" area (163 ppi)

I must pay more attention to the spec sheet. Now I see why the screen on The Storm is so vibrant. I tweaked the browser settings and am now seeing a much better browser. Still can't compare to Safari but the Storm browser is a good browser (after tweaking). I only use the Touch Pro for the Microsoft Office Mobile apps when on the fly.

All in all the iPhone is great in what it does and so is the Storm. I am truly surprised that being a totally new product. The Storm is very stable and I as of yet have not seen any bugs or glitches. I don't know where all the bad reviews are coming from. Maybe the writers were looking for a mini super computer instead of a PDA/phone.

As A Footnote: Anyone thinking of purchasing the HTC Diamond or Touch Pro beware. The Diamond has no removable memory (4GB's internal memory). After doing a hard reset (which doesn't work, have to do a memory format) (like so often is needed by Win Mo devices) the Diamond stops seeing the 4GB's of internal memory. You are then stuck with the system memory of 256MB's. The Touch Pro also has this problem but has removable memory and is much easier to resolve the problem.

I have a new mini super computer I carry around with me, it's called a Jaguar. It was named that because it is so fast. The problem is, it's just a little to big to fit in my pocket.
Still working on that problem...........:2cool:

Swagger - you gotta check out the HTC Fuze. The build quality is SO much better than the G1! If you could put Android on the Fuze that would be something! And I like the keyboard better than the G1.

I generally like the BlackBerrys (Bold/Storm) but the menu system is so foreign to me and not intuitive at all. I don't like the GPS software. Takes a bit to get my current location. The shift key on the keyboard is way too low for my tastes as well.

Funny you mentioned that. The Verizon Rep and I were just saying yesterday. People say the iPhone does not have enough features. On the other hand people are slamming the Storm for having to many features thus making it to complicated to use. We joked that people are never satisfied. Mark

Verizon has a 30 day "Test Drive" you can buy The Storm, check it out for 30 days, return it for a full refund if it doesn't meet your needs. Also if you are new to Verizon you will owe NOTHING for minutes used. What better way to seriously check out a phone for yourself and not the reviews??? Mark

A friend of mine who works as the CM in a company that produces Mobile Games tried a BlackBerry Storm (9500) today because they received it so they would start making games and stuff for it. He heard from a lot of people that its screen can not be scratched, nothing can happen to it. I SWEAR, he actually took the risk of bringing a knife and scratching the screen, NOTHING HAPPENED. No scratches or whatever LOL!

Got my tracking number this morning and my storm is expected to arrive Tuesday. Yay!!!

The reason for the delay was not really an "Out of Stock" issue. RIM found certain "Bugs" in the software and decided to correct them "In House" instead of having customers go through the hassle. I commend RIM for that. Verizon is shipping me a new Storm and I should get it Monday. My Storm had a glitch that it would not update. Also in the latest edition of software which I'm sure will be on your Storm is the ability to update the OS over the air instead of hooking to a computer.

As I said, don't expect the ease of use out of the box that the iPhone has. You will need a good couple of days to get use to it. The transition will be easier if you have already owned BlackBerry's and are familiar with their OS. You will find in a couple days you will be a Storm expert.

If you have any questions or need any help post in this thread or PM me and I will help you all that I can...Happy Holidays...Mark

Thanks Mark, I have been a Blackberry user for a few years so I am good to go with their UI, but I will definately ping you with questions, questions, questions once I get it in my hands Tuesday. May even ask to work from home that day so I can get it as soon as they deliver it lol.

It does. I pressed on a Storm screen today at Best Buy (the phone wasn't operational).

Btw, was it a dummy phone? I was pleasantly surprised to notice that the real device's screen clicks much easier than the dummies.

It was a little humorous to watch people who didn't know about the Storm, playing with them. They would lightly move their fingers over the menus, but couldn't figure out how to make them work.

When I started clicking the one I was testing, though, they picked up on it right away. "Ahhh", each person said, "I see now... cool".

One thing I wanted to ask about the Storm for a long time now, does tilting work in it? Like the tilting in iPhone games, where you tilt the iPhone to steer a car for instance. Also like when you throw your iPhone (of course not for real) in order to bowl. Is it like that in the Storm too? I doubt it.

You my friend will have a hard choice to make. Both are great phones. The choice will be simple if you need a "Work" & "Play" phone the Storm will be the phone of choice. However if on vacation and just need a "leisure phone" the iPhone is great for that. All in all I would say just prepare and extra space on your belt. You will probably end up carrying both. At this point if I were only allowed to choose one. I would have to go with the Storm. The Storm does everything the iPhone can do plus so much more. I would hate to say bye bye to the Safari browser but the Opera browser (I downloaded) on the Storm works just fine. I'm not saying it compares to Safari. I can't find a belt strong enough to hold both a v1 iPhone and a storm (as I heard it's quite heavy)....lol. Does the built in IM applications use data or SMS? I keep reading conflicting information about it. Usually built in ones tap into the SMS pool which is why carriers pre-install them. I have a JiveTalk license but they won't have a Storm compatible one till 09'.

Can you believe they charge 10.00 a month for navigation (VZ Navigator), 2.99 a month for visual voicemail??? You are already paying thirty dollars for data both VZ Navigator and Visual Voice mail use data. Why the up charge then??? Screw Verizon download Google Maps with street view. They pack a lot of punch in a phone then charge you for everything it does. There is also a stand alone BlackBerry plan for 49.99 for data only no calls if you already have a voice plan with another carrier. Mark

Another plus with the Storm is coverage. I am so sick of AT&T's subpar signal. More bars in more places has to refer to places that sell liquor and not AT&T's signal strength.

No more inadvertant opening of a function do to errant screen touch.

In my opinion RIM has scored an out of the park grandslam homerun with The Storm. Mark

nice review mark, I too love the storm. However I returned mine and switched back to the Bold as it was more practical for my use. The keyboard and screen clarity of the Bold are unmatched in my opinion. I can't wait to see a GSM version of it on AT&T however.

Feel free to join us over at everythingberry.com to talk more about the Storm :D

mine barely made it through a day with just my mobileme account pushing. I have 4 push email accounts on my Bold, and heavily use it for browsing, emailing, texting, and calling and I can easily get 2 + days out of it. I also constantly have Yahoo IM and Myspace open and running in the background and getting my IM's and myspace messages instantly. Really it's not a good comparison because the iPhone will not do all these things at once, part of the reason being to save battery life. Now it is also understandable that the iPhone would have shorter life because it is powering a much bigger screen.

4.6.0.185
2.2.1

only one more decimal placement...its not that big of a difference. The reason being that the Blackberry has many different platforms versus just one iPhone OS

4.6 is the OS for the Bold
4.5 for the Curve
4.7 for the Storm

The other numbers are just build versions just like the iPhone i.e. 2.1.4, etc...

The storm is definitely a good work and play phone and I like it alot, but I'd only advise it if you really want the touch experience and extra screen real estate.

The Bold's audio output while listening to music or watching videos is much better whether through the speakers or headphones. Screen resolution is much more crisp, although the screen is a bit smaller. The phone operates much, much faster. Even after the .75 update I found my Storm rather sluggish. I thought about keeping it and getting it unlocked and having both, but the thing that really hurt me with the Storm is the fact it was getting dirt under the screen and dirt hanging out in the gaps between the screen and the side of the phone. Sooo it made the decision easy for me to go back to my Bold and I'm gonna buy me a used v1 iPhone to keep as well :D

It's funny that you mentioned the screen gap. I was thinking only time will tell what the outcome of dust and debris inside the Storm will be. I can't see any good outcome of this. RIM took a long time to come to market with this phone. I can only hope and believe that they seriously considered the dust factor. I'm also wondering how long the click screen will click. Usually all of this is not a concern for me since I upgrade phones so often. I think about it now because I really like the Storm and want to keep and use it for a while. Oh well only time will tell.

BTW: Aggie do you have Gmail and if so is the IMAP working on your BB??? Mark

i have a Gmail account only to use google sync for my contacts. I don't use it for any of my mail, so it's not set up on my device. I've read on crackberry that people have had problems with IMAP.

I agree with you on how long the clicking mechanism will last. Another worry I had with the Storm. If you plan on keeping it less than a year I think it will be fine. Any longer I'd have concerns about it.

I have to share this. Someone sent me a link to a YouTube video. I clicked both links (on iPhone & Storm) at exactly the same time. I watched the video, laughed and closed it out on the Storm. Meanwhile the iPhone was still having a hard time even bringing up the video. Wow!!! Mark

Not yet Mark, looking at the tracking, it arrived at the sorting facility about an hour ago with a slated delivery of today by 7pm. Sucks b/c it sat at the Newark, NJ facility from Saturday evening until this morning. I can't wait though! I am going to pick up a holster and a silicon case at lunch. Did you get the chrome docking station for the alarm clock function? I got it and can't wait to chuck out my old alarm clock...lol

The charging cradle for bedside mode is awesome. I've got mine on order for the Bold. The one for the Storm looks really slick.

You guys should join up at everythingberry.com we've got a pretty good group of EiC'ers already over there-most of these posts are probably more appropriate over there. Comparing the phones here is cool, but strictly BB related discussion probably is more appropriate there or at least in the off topic section here :D

Cool thing #1, I am right now doing the OTA firmware upgrade. How awesome is that? It came with the .65 firmware which is supposed to be laggy and slow, I had a few bad lags, but even with that it is awesome. I can't imagine how much cooler it will be once .75 installs :2cool:. Now I need to go get a holster and a skin. In the time it took me to type this reply the upgrade is already 22% completed. The dock is way better for charging then using the wall charger, not only for the cool alarm clock function but b/c the port goes in and out easily where as the wall charger is like a pitbull once you get it in...lol

It's much, much better after the .75 upgrade.

The OTA upgrade takes a good 20 minutes or so but well worth it. Doing it via desktop is much more difficult and time consuming.

I have been helping my mom out with it the last few days. I don't even know what I am doing. For not knowing, I'm doing pretty good. In those fews days, it has gotten a lot easier to use. I wish that were the case, been busy working and taking time with the little ones. The jury is still out on this phone, so far the worst part of the phone is the main thing about it, the click screen, RIM could have had a winner WITHOUT it and just had a non-tactile feedback screen like the iPhone. I am concerned about the space around the screen with respect to dirt, dust, etc. and weather after prolonged use with the spring holding the screen start to loosen and it not sit as firm as it does now. BUT, it's only been two days so I got 28 more days to give it hell! lol. Did you pick up the chrome charger? Alarm clock function is awesome!

Those "comparisons" can be slanted any which way you want. It wouldn't take much to make one showing off all the features that the iPhone has that the Storm doesn't. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

In any event, if you don't need the things that the Storm or iPhone lack, then they won't matter to you -- so these comparisons are not about which is the better phone, but which one more suits your needs.

I didn't move from the Treo to the iPhone because the iPhone was better -- I moved to it because it was better for ME. I'm no more loyal to Apple than I was to Palm.

Joet, Same reason I moved from the Treo to the iPhone and if something comes along that is better for me than the iPhone I will move to it.You guys hit the nail on the head! Blackberry OS is very easy to use and you can move the icons around just like on a iPhone. You can even put them on folders too.

Yeah, when I used the iPhone I really missed putting applications together in one folder like in my Nokia phones. But of course the interface of the Storm and the BlackBerry phones is much better than Nokia's.

I kind of miss the iPhone 3G games and its iTunes anyhow. :laugh2:

iPhone users go to other boards and do the exact same thing, difference of opinions is the spice of life. Yeah some bashing is excessive but if the iPhone as diehards say it is, then they can easily disfuse the bashing with facts. :laugh2: I am a Blackberry fan but I love my iPhone and even convinced my VP of Sales to get one instead of a Storm. I really don't think either phone is better. I like them both. Hopefully you are not referring to me as I don't want to try to convince anybody that one particular phone or platform is better. I think each phone has their areas that they are better. That is why I carry both :D

it is EDGE only but it is actually pretty nice-as fast if not faster than the 1st iPhone. Web browsing is quite nice on it, although I'd never venture to put any phone equal to web browsing on the iPhone. It is close though but not as good in my opinion. But all the features it packs overall, it is worth it to me.

It only supports 2100 3g bands which is the EURO standard. AT&T uses 850/1900 mhz bands.

Update:

I thought I would write with another BB Storm update. I figure that no one is even remotely interested in the electronics disaster RIM calls the BlackBerry Storm anymore but here goes. I won't go through all the other problems associated with the Storm. I will just mention a new one I just discovered today. Yes it speaks to the concerns many had concerning the large gap between the screen and phone body. Well folks to confirm your fears. There is a large amount of dust showing either in or under the Storm's screen. I turned the Storm off today to give the screen a good cleaning. In the bright sun I could see that dust has entered the screen area. What was RIM thinking when they designed the phone? The whole BB Storm experience for me has been a nightmare!!!

I am so glad that coming upon two years the iPhone is still going strong. I even did the enhanced speaker sound hack (pricking the speaker covering with a pin) and still no dust in the iPhone's screen. I am strongly convinced (after all the smart devices I've had and have) that the iPhone is King. I also believe that with the 3.0 update coming no other maker will be able to beat the iPhone. I love you iPhone and I will never doubt you again. I was thinking today if RIM and Apple got together they could make one hell of a smart phone. If all the functions of a BlackBerry could be incorporated with all the features of the iPhone. OMG that would be one super hot device. Yes I will dream on.

P.S. One thing I can say that RIM got right is the new BlackBerry Curve 8900 Titanium. I absolutely love the 8900 even without a touch screen. Having it on T-Mobile is a sad story though. The "T" in T-Mobile has got to stand for terrible service. Yes folks T-Mobile sucks!!! Mark

I've tried the Storm on several occasions now, and I will still state for the record that touch/push thing is just a horrible idea. Not in theory, perhaps, but once they actually made it and used it for a while, why would the engineers still think it was a good idea? Didn't their thumbs get sore? Didn't they see the light from around the screen? I just don't get it.

It was definitely a bad idea spawned by the "me too" craze. Had the storm had a regular touchscreen like the iPhone which would of eliminated the gaps it would of been a much better device. I liked the device somewhat, just not enough to justify paying $200-$250 for and locking myself into two more years. If it was $99 I would of been more forgiving of it. Blackberry is moving away from their roots in order to stay competitive by opening up their user base to the huge consumer market. But without a completely new OS they are losing and will continue to lose. BlackBerry has become a status symbol but they are just not built for the consumer multimedia arena just yet. While they get new users in the door, the retention of those new consumers falls of drastically. A lot of friends and co-workers who move to a BlackBerry from a regular phone, leave not to long after because they get bored of the BB. Yes, it can pull email the best, but for the majority that is a "so what", email isn't mission critical for everyone.

When the iPhone came out, Blackberry's were constantly being promoted for their "full qwerty keyboards". Once they realized the iPhone's touchscreen wasn't just a fad, they decided to join in. But they still had to do something "different" with the screen so they could talk about the keyboard on their commericials, lol. IIRC, it went something like this, "Wait what's this?, it clicks, it feels like you're actually typing on a real keyboard, wow". I tried a friends Storm, and I didn't like it at all compared to the iPhone. The UI definately takes some getting used to.

Dave,
You left one screen flaw out. Didn't the engineers know that huge amounts of dust were going to enter the Storm? I remember DWP having concerns to the point of returning his Storm. Not feeling comfortable with the screen "Issues". Whomever was on the Storm development team should be fired. I still cannot believe RIM sent the Storm to market with so many flaws. Wow, I bet RIM lost alot of first time BlackBerry buyers forever.

I was shopping yesterday and stopped to respond to an email. Yes I was using my iPhone. I was totally surprised when another shopper asked what kind of phone is that. I said it's the iPhone. The guy started asking all types of questions like he had never heard of iPhone before. As I showed him several Apps and so forth he was truly amazed (of course). Very good point. RIM sort of painted themselves into a corner by poo-pooing the touchscreen revolution for as long as they did. Their attempt to bridge their philosophy with touchscreens resulted in this odd contraption. I don't think anyone believes that it feels like typing on a keyboard, and I'll bet we never see any new models with this technology from them again.

They're in the same boat with the business/entertainment balance. They've pushed the BB as a business tool for so long, that they're now missing out on a seriously booming home market for smartphone entertainment and media control. They're lucky they had the lead in the market they did, because they're having to do some serious catch-up right now.

The Storm of course is not for everyone. Some people just didn't care for the click screen. Also a BlackBerry is very technical phone with all of it's features and set up. A lot of people would rather have a phone like the iPhone do to it's ease of use.

My only problem with the Storm was all of it's glitches. Now that I have updated to .113 it seems all the problems have been solved. I also am used to and comfortable with the click screen. I also love and use on a daily basis the functions of a BlackBerry. The iPhone I have is basically my web phone. I hardly ever use it as a phone. The sound quality and speaker phone are just not to my liking. I do enjoy many of the applications the iPhone has to offer.

All of that said. I would not want to give up either of my BlackBerry's nor my iPhone each has it's purpose.

BTW: Welcome to the forum. We are one big happy online family. We do argue like cat's and dogs at times but there are some really good people here. Being new to iPhone you will find that there is no question you have regarding iPhone that will go unanswered here. Best Regards, Mark

True, push notification would be fine for emails, IM's and such, but I'd hate to lose my high score in a game because I have to leave the app to check an email I just got. As for fetching every 30 mins, I'm fine with that, but it did take a toll on my battery when I had the iPhone

If you want a great file system, the Winmo is the way to go.
I dont find the speakers on either my storm or my iphone to particularly good anyway.
I have never swapped battery's in my life. IMHO, this is the most overrated attribute out there. Just give me a phone that can last the day with heavy usage and Im satisfied. Charging every night is expected.

What I will miss most about my storm is BBM and the ability to customize everything. I have emails set to vibrate once, texts and Im's to vibrate twice and phone calls to vibrate three quick times. I never have to take my phone out of my pocket to know what is going on.

Actually you defeated your own over rated (user changeable battery) statement. Short battery life on a phone can be fixed by carrying a spare or two. You might think it's over rated until you go to another country and your battery goes dead and you are left without a phone for several days. Heck you can purchase a BB battery almost anywhere.

Remembering to keep a spare battery that is charged, IMO, is just as much of a pain as carrying around a wall/car charger combo. Its personal preference, but for me, the better solution is finding a phone that can get through the day. Means to an end I suppose.

I wonder will the new iPhone's battery be up to the task. The rumored faster processor, the 3g and all the other bells and whistles will certainly tax the battery. Maybe Apple is going to put a downsized version of the new MBP's battery in the iPhone and a power user can power use all day.

I, personally, will deal with a little thicker device if they can cram a bigger battery in there. Also, if it does have the OLED screen, that should help as well.

This thread has been going for a while now. You'll find that Swagger is a two dollar whore for the Storm, except that he's scared that the shots won't work. :laugh2:
