Well I'm going to wait for it. I'm kinds annoyed with the lag as well. Maybe 2.2 fixed this as well as cydia fixing this.

I restored the other day just because it had been a while. I still haven't upgraded to 2.2 but I think I might and then just wait it out for the Jailbreak.

i upgraded, and am loving it. But i'm on a v1. You 3g-ers may want to keep this in mind:

http://blog.iphone-dev.org/

If you want to keep that option of a ‘soft-unlock in the near future’ available but you want the new features of 2.2, you will be able to update to 2.2 using a PwnageTool created custom ipsw file that disables the baseband update. You will be able to do this using an updated version of PwnageTool that will be released sometime soon.

I jailbroke my iPhone 3G using QuickPwn 1.1, and it's working just fine. No lag or whatever as long as you don't fill it up with unknown, unnecessary applications from Cydia and Installer.app.

Then you are in the fortunate minority. There are widely reported issues with lag even on vanilla 2.1 iPhones.

My 2.2 has been working so well I am hesitant to jailbreak again. This thing is MUCH faster than it has ever been, and I don't download a lot of apps when I jailbreak...my primary being the wifi toggle, bossprefs and flashlight. The rest I can live without. For now I'm very happy with the 2.2 OEM and until someone says the 2.2 jailbreak is just as fast I'm not going back to modding.

I can understand you holding off, but it really is a great update. May not have given us tangible things, but the phone is snappy and rock solid in all areas. Best update yet.

Yes yes, I googled right after I read your post.

By the way, can you explain or elaborate on how to do this?

Locked iPhone 3G - Preserve Baseband

This applies if you have a locked iPhone 3G and you wish to update to 2.2 but preserve the iPhone’s current baseband software. Preserving the baseband will give you the maximum chance for any upcoming software unlock. To upgrade your phone to 2.2 and preserve the state of the baseband you need to create a custom .ipsw with PwnageTool. This custom .ipsw will not contain the baseband update but of course will still allow all the cool new stuff from 2.2.
There are plenty of tutorials about this process on the web, but PwnageTool contains intuitive graphics and easy to follow prompts that should have you up and running in no time at all.

Oh and I use a Gevey-3G sim chip, so is that going to be affected? I can't afford to lose it, because I am not in the States and I can not buy any other unlocking chips from here.

Have you ever jailbroken your phone?

Yes, I definitely have. Using QuickPwn 1.1 on Macintosh OSX.

Ok.....essentially what the blog is trying to say is that you cannot use QuickPwn or else it will update your baseband. if you have no intention of ever unlocking your iphone 3G using a soft unlock then it doesn;t matter. If that's something that you may want to do then you need to use the old fashioned pwnage tool. I've always used the pwnage tool so this isn't an issue for me. I'm really bad with giving directions but I found this walkthrough using the pwnage tool (an older version) but it will work exactly the same.

In the meantime start downloading the pwnage tool because there server that's I;m downloading from is pretty slow. Start downloading then start reading.

Thank you so much. So from what you've said is that I can use PwnageTool to create a ipsw or whatever file so I would prevent my baseband from ever getting updated. Then I can normally update to 2.2 from iTunes 8 on Mac OSX, jailbreak it, and then normally unlock it if any future software unlocking methods come out?

Almost.......

You create the custom ipsw with pwnage. Then use that custom one to update via itunes. The directions will walk you through.

DO NOT USE THE IPSW THAT APPLE GIVES YOU!!!!

You only want to download that one so that you can have the pwnage tool customize it

When asked to update the iphone in itunes select DOWNLOAD ONLY!

Look, I do understand what you're saying but it still doesn't help me that much. I am going to explain my situation and exactly what I am trying to do, in points.

1) I have a 8GB black iPhone 3G. I jailbroke it using QuickPwn 1.1 on Mac OSX and Cydia/Installer.app are working just fine and the phone is pretty efficient.

2) I have purchased it while it's already updated to 2.1 so I didn't need to do anything except jailbreak it using their tutorial on iPhone Dev Team's blog.

3) I bought it from the States with a Gevey-3G sim chip so I can use it on my network provider in Egypt (Mobinil). I can't really do anything except use the chip in oder to use my sim card on the iPhone 3G. And there are no iPhone 3G experts here in my country so if anything happens, I'm toast.

4) I have iTunes 8 installed on Macintosh. In the tutorial you gave me they are saying that I MUST have iTunes 7.7 which I don't and can't have since it'll force me to update each time.

5) What I am trying to do is, update to 2.2 to experience the new things but in the same time be able to use any software unlock (if any comes out) when it does come out, and also keep my Gevey-3G chip working fine so I would be able to do phone calls and SMS. The "No Service" thing would really piss me off.

Alright, I hope you understood my situation and what exactly I'm trying to do. Maybe this could help you explain it. Thank you so much again and I am really sorry for wasting your time, but I just really need your help on this.

EDIT - I would also like to add that I have the AT&T 3G sim card that came with the iPhone 3G (the one that has the service plan and everything) so I could easily sync and access my iPhone 3G over iTunes 8. Because it doesn't support unrecognized sim cards as we all know. So that's not going to be a problem. Also, I am now downloading the new 2.2 firmware for the iPhone 3G, I chose 'Download Only' not 'Download and Install' as you said. :]

So for now I am downloading the new 2.2 firmware update via iTunes 8.0.1 on Mac OSX and am going to download PwnageTool 2.2 from the iPhone Dev Team's blog later on. I understand almost everything for now except two things.

1) Is my Gevey-3G still going to work after I do the custom ipsw and everything using PwnageTool? So I would be able to do phone calls and SMS or not?

2) How do I create a customer ipsw? What do I exactly need? As I said, I chose DOWNLOAD ONLY from iTunes 8 (for the 2.2 firmware update). Is that file locatable after it completes downloading from iTunes so it can be edited/copied later on or something? I don't get it.

Anyway, it's 2:55 AM for now so I am going to sleep, have to wake up early for the gym tomorrow. I am going to see you later and thank you so much for helping me out dude. I'll be waiting for your answers to my questions, thanks again and have a nice day. Peace.

I don't know whether your Gevey sim will still work. As far as building the customized ipsw.....the link I gave you explains how you use the pwnage tool. Once you complete the process with the original ipsw and the pwnage tool it creates a custom ipsw.

So for now I am downloading the new 2.2 firmware update via iTunes 8.0.1 on Mac OSX and am going to download PwnageTool 2.2 from the iPhone Dev Team's blog later on. I understand almost everything for now except two things.
