I'm going to give my iPhone to my GF, do I have to go to AT&T and switch the iPhone data plan from my line to hers? Also, if she syncs the iPhone to her iTunes library, what's going to happen? Thanks in advance

You will need to make the switch on the data plan. As far as the sync, it would probably be best to restore as a new phone and start fresh. She can then put the music,contacts.ect. on that she wants

TarekElsakka

Her sim card will work as long as it's an AT&T one. If not, she'll need to buy a Gevey-3G chip or any other 3G chips around. That's if you are talking about an iPhone 3G. As for the old iPhone, you can easily unlock it for her and she could use any sim card she wants on it.

It's late and I may not be thinking straight, but why can't you use the existing sim in the 3G?

It must be an old SIM if it is not 3G. All the ATT sim cards have been 3G for quite a while. I think if you are transferring her line, they will give you a new sim for free. My husband lost his phone a while ago and I gave him my BB pearl to use and they gave us a new sim. No problems. I asked if there was a charge, and they said "nope." I was like "awesome."

I think it is 3G, but I'm not sure. Sounds good, if its not 3G, I'll just go get a new one then.

Yeah, ATT will fix you up the best way. As Lisa said, most likely they will not charge you for a new sim if that is what you need.

If the AT&T sim isn't 3G, then it won't work on your iPhone 3G. That's the case. I have had a sim card since 1998 that was working just fine until a few weeks ago, but when I tried inserting it (and the Gevey-3G sim) together, it just couldn't read it. So I had to apply for a new sim card and got it the same day, a 3G one. But it should work fine on a normal iPhone.

I'm really lovin my Bold so far, sure it doesn't have the App Store, but it satisfies me everywhere else.

I am actually, lol, I'm on everythingberry.com and crackberry.com :laugh2:

I just really needed the push service that BB offers and couldn't wait any more for Apple to roll theirs out. Not to mention copy/paste (which I used several times today) and the fantastic email service.

Well, I do need portability, so I am in the market for a MacBook (the air us out of the question right now), but a 13 inch screen is way too small for me, so the possibility of a Pro isn't out of the question. I do want an iMac, but I'm planning to get that another time (if my MacBook experience is good).

I suggest you should go with the early '08 versions of MacBook Pro (not the new Aluminum ones) if your budget isn't that high. But I can assure you that the MacBook's screen is way too small. Even go for the 17" MacBook Pro if you want, but I highly doubt you'll find one. The MacBook Air is too expensive for its performance.

Sik, are you sure man, did you use BB previously? it is not the coolest thing around, i shifted from using a BB Curve and a Nokia E71 together to using only iphone for a week now and i cannot take my hands off it, it is so damn sexy:) i can hardly imagine moving away from iphone platform in the futur, it is the coolest i've seen, even though vodafone in Egypt is depriving us from so many functionality, still the hope is that i will unlock it soon and install Cydia, then sky is the limit :)

You live in Egypt? Wow, I do too lol. Which place do you live in? By the way, you can install Cydia now (even with 2.2 firmware) and it will still work. I've tried it. But my network provider is Mobinil, same thing anyway. If you have the 3G then just use the Gevey-3G sim chip and it'll work, if you have the 2G iPhone, then just use the new unlock/jailbreak software for 2.2 on iPhone Dev Team's blog.

You're welcome. I don't have a Black Berry Bold. I wanted a Black Berry for a long period of time but then changed my mind since it's not that cool when used in Egypt you know, it's only good when you have a good service plan with AT&T or T-Mobile in the States since you'll get many features and many discounts. I was talking about the iPhone 3G, I bought it from Brooklyn, New York. The guy I bought it from brought me the Gevey-3G sim chip, you attach that to your sim card (the chip is very very small and the exact same shape of the sim card) and then you insert it in your iPhone 3G. Here's how it looks like (it even works with 2.2 firmware).

Oh i see, damn i am just back from the states!!! but didn't have the iphone at that time, just got it about a week ago! so may be next time i go i will get it, i have couple of questions though;

Do you need to keep that chip always in the phone? so if it is removed do you lose the unlocked status???

When you use it, do you still get your mails from .mac over the air??? do you still sync contacts and calendar over the air too?

When you use it can you still do the usual iTunes Sync?

Thanks again for your help.

2) When you use it, do you still get your mails from .mac over the air??? do you still sync contacts and calendar over the air too?

3) When you use it can you still do the usual iTunes Sync?

Thanks again for your help.

1) You need to attach it to any (non AT&T) sim card in order to use it as an actual phone and not get the 'No Service' message.

2) I don't know what you mean by (over the air) but if you mean over wireless then yes, but over GPRS or network provider's internet service then I doubt it. In Mobinil, I can go to one of their stores and they will activate the internet service for me, like manually, but I don't know about Vodafone.

3) Nope. You have to enter the AT&T sim that came with it (when you bought the service plan, even if the AT&T line stopped working). If you use any unrecognized sim, you won't be able to access your iPhone through iTunes, it will tell you (The sim you entered is unrecognized, please go to AT&T for sim replacement). And I doubt you even got the AT&T sim when you bought the iPhone.

Yea, I'm sure dude. I did in fact have a BB (Pearl) prior to my iPhone. I know it's not the "coolest" platform out there appearance wise, but the iPhone can't touch the BB Bold practicality wise. Cydia did offer some useful apps, but it still didn't offer me what i really needed (real-time push email, MMS, copy/paste, longer battery life).

I'm not trying to knock the iPhone, I loved mine while I had it, but it just couldn't give me what I needed. It has found a nice, loving home with my GF though

That way he'll have to pay the cheap price of it (probably $29 - $35) but also pay shipping expenses to Egypt, not less than $39 which is higher than the chip's price itself. Plus, in Egypt, our visa cards do not work on PayPal so I don't think he can pay the seller using PayPal.
