For the most part, turbo sims are junk and unreliable. Not a good way to go. Best bet is to wait for an unlock method. It is my understanding that it is real close to being released.
Here's what the Dev Team had to say:
The use of SIM-Proxies (small circuit boards/chips that sit underneath the SIM card) to provide GSM/UMTS service on your locked iPhone 3G is a method that we have always advised against (http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/44428446/updates). Early reports suggest that the 2.2 update disables the functionality of these devices. The techniques used were always unreliable and we are surprised that they have lasted this long.
I have an unlocked version of the 3G. As the 2.2 upgrade also upgrades the baseband I've yet to find out what impact it will have on my iPhone. Hopefully none.

I read a thread somewhere by a guy who bought a legit unlocked 3G in Hong Kong and then did his 2.2 upgrade via iTunes only to discover he could not longer use the phone with his cell provider's SIM afterwards. I guess he got the 2.2 baseband disease as well, despite having a legally unlocked phone.
I also made the mistake of ugrading to 2.2 and my Turbosim is also no longer working.
My assumption is that within 30 days the Turbosim manufacturers will come up with a new version of the Turbosim to tackle the new baseband firmware issue.
For now, we just have to sit back and enjoy our iPhones which have been converted to an Itouch

I'll be calling Apple before upgrading and want to be sure of some facts first.

have unlocked-there's no problem at all. that would be insane if Apple released update causing problems to unlocked units.it's just story from some idiot who got his phone bricked being jealous about unlocked units

So just to confirm, you have updated an unlocked 3G to 2.2?
Could you tell me what the model numer says from the About page in Settings please?
I was thinking this through and it makes no sense for the baseband upgrade to lock it. The unlocked countries - Singapore, Italy, Hong Kong etc, would then have a flood of people calling their countries official supplier to get their iPhones activated with no way of doing this from iTunes.
I'd stilll like to check first though

It may well be that the OP there just got the locked screen like I did after upgrading to 2.1. (and got a sinking feeling in my stomach!).
Once the phone got a signal it then displayed a message saying it was now activated, without needing to go through any activation process.
Howver, 2.1 wasn't a baseband upgrade (which is the lockable bit).
Thanks.

Oh well, I hope they work on a release for the 2.2 version then. Because the Turbo Sims (I have the Gevey-3G one) are working just fine until 2.1.

Here's what the Dev Team had to say:

Early reports suggest that the 2.2 update disables the functionality of these devices. The techniques used were always unreliable and we are surprised that they have lasted this long
For Dev-Team to simply say that SIM-Proxies are unreliable is not true. For those people living abroad like myself, and who have no other way to be able to use their 3G phones, it is the only solution. And mine worked perfectly for a long time, of course until I made the mistake of doing the 2.2 upgrade.
Of course, everyone would like a software unlock instead of using SIM-Proxies, but the phone has been out since July, which is 5 months aleady, and still there is no software unlock available. Lots of talk on the Dev-Team site, and I am sure they are hard at work at it, but the reality nothing else is available yet. So people have to use what is available and at this point SIM-Proxies are the only option for some people. So lets be thankful for small blesings rather than knocking them!
This English web site though says they offer a software unlock for the 3G, which is basically what Dev-Team has been working on:
http://www.unlocx.com/index.asp
They also say they offer a working rollback to Firmware 2.1 which is available in their members area, but I don't even see a log-in area for members on the site.
I wonder if this site is legit...

I wasn't knocking them - just passing on the info.

I've often wondered about these websites.
We all know unlock is possible as some carriers do it on request (Australia) and others will have to (O2 in the UK once the contract is up).
I'm also sure there are people out there that are just as capabale as the Dev Team.
It's plausible, therefore.
If I had a £400 locked iPhone I think I'd risk £14.99 on it working. You can always get the money back from your Credit Card Company if it turns out bad.
One trip worth of overseas calls would easily save that.
No inclusion of Cydia mentioned though!

Rip - Unfortunately I doubt it is a legit site. Apparently there are a number of these fake sites running in the UK which I read then send a link for you to download some tool which doesn't work. There was one site that gave a list of these scam sites, this was not one of them, but I belive if this guy had a real fix then more people would be talking about it.
Anyway, www.iphonehacks.com (http://www.iphonehacks.com) talks about a method to rollback your firmware to 2.1 if you did the 2.2 upgrade. I followed the steps and it didn't work for me. I also put a post on their blog which explains the problem I had when trying to rollback the firmware to 2.1. You can read here if you like and scroll down to see my comment:
http://www.iphonehacks.com/2008/11/downgrade-22-21.html#more
Unfortunately a rollback to 2.1 would only allow you to jailbreak your phone again, but probably would not allow you to use it again with a Proxy-SIM, which is really my only interest at this point since I am back to using my Moto Razr for the time being.

11-22-2008, 01:37 PM
Doesn't that make them unreliable????
Not really. It was a cheap and completely reliable solution until I made the mistake today of doing the 2.2 upgrade. Considering Dev-Team snubs them, but is yet to offer any better solution for unlocking at all, I am yet to put as much faith in Dev-Team as I have in Proxy-SIMS. Simply put, Proxy-SIMS have worked at unlocking iPhones since the release of the 3G and to date Dev-Team has no unlock on offer.
My assumption is that there will be a big market for the Proxy-SIM manufacturers to sell everyone a new Proxy-SIM so they can use their 3G iPhones with the new 2.2 Firmware. You will probably also have all new phones being sold by Apple stocking the 2.2 Firmware out of the box, so they will need an Proxy-SIM unlock solution as well so they can be used abroad.
At this point I am banking on a new version of a Proxy-SIM to appear on the market before an unlock solution from Dev-Team for the 3G is even available. Dev-Team has claimed to be close for a long time so it is hard to know how much longer it might be before they offer something. Also worth noting that any Dev-Team unlock will only work on older versions of the 3G Firmware. Not sure how keen I would be to run an old version of the Firmware just to have a software versus a hardware unlock that runs with the latest Firmware.
And for the $10-$15 cost of a Proxy-SIM, that is a fine solution for me :)

What other, if any, solution is there? Any only if and when there is a more cost affective, alternative solution does $10-$15 seem expensive. Right now it is $10-$15 to unlock versus nothing.
But to be quite frank about the whole locking thing, as Apple's share price continues to fall, and with their iPhone sales dropping as of late, I see no other solution for them than to sell unlocked phones in the future if they want to maintain a steady level of phone sales amidst this global economic crisis. Otherwise, they could find themselves dealing with a bunch of unhappy shareholders and lower revenues.

That's what I said before, Apple is losing business. But someone here replied me saying that AT&T paid hell alot of money and that's why they are in control of everything.

I doubt that will happen until the current carrier agreements expire, by which time the '4G' will be out along with renewed carrier agreements.
Rip - Unfortunately I doubt it is a legit site.
If I was in the position of needing an unlock solution right now I'd risk the £14.99 though - you just never know
Fortunately mine is already unlocked but I can see a purchase of another for my GF right around the corner.
Here's and excerpt from their T&Cs.

I still would like to try and rollback my phone to 2.1 and see if I can get it working again with the Turbosim. Its worth a try for now until a new Turbosim is released to support 2.2. I think devteam's comment saying that it wont work is more based upon the fact that a 2.1 rollback after a 2.2 upgrade wont work with whatever unlock they might have forthcoming. I tend to like to try things for myself though becuase you just never know.

I knew it. As I said and as every one else says, there aren't any software unlock methods for the iPhone 3G yet, only jailbreaking software is available. I doubt any one can get to the unlocking software of the 3G before iPhone Dev Team can.

Yes, exactly, the baseband issue is the info coming out of the Dev-Team camp, but my point about liking to try things for myself meant that I would like to rollback my Firmware to 2.1 (which so far I have not been able to do successfully) and put my Proxy-SIM in there to see if it might work again as a phone.
So far, I have not read any accounts anywhere in any of the forums of anyone actually doing a firmware rollback and then saying they tested it with their Turbosim and it did or didn't work.
Basically, we don't really know until someone has actually tried it.

I successfully managed to run the downgrade form 2.2 to 2.1 and my sim didnt work after (No Service bug). i need to downgrade my baseband aswell but as of yet cannot see anything out there to help do this. i am on orange in the uk.
one thing that has got me thinking is when you get offered the update through itunes it asks to save a backup, would it not be possible to locate these files from someone who hasnt updated and just tell your computer or itunes to look at these rather than trying to go back manually. there must be a fail safe as mac wouldnt release software without the chance that it may need reversing.
I did try running the KiPhone program after the downgrade but this didnt do anything, this is probably because it is for the 2.0 to 1.4 downgrade but i thought id try everything. if anyone finds anything out about how to downgrade let me know.
i found yotube most helpful so far, the link to dongrade the main software to 2.1 from 2.2 is :

just keep pausing the video and follow the steps. THIS WONT FIX THE BASEBAND THOUGH.

I have read on www.quickpwn.com (http://www.quickpwn.com) that a lot of users did the 2.2 upgrade and now they can not use the iPhone as an actual phone but more like an iPod Touch. The 'No Service' bug is there and even when they inserted several sim chips (including Gevey-3G). So I guess I am going to stick to 2.1 as long as it's not going to affect my phone function. Maybe they'll come up with updates to that later, who knows.

Thanks for posting that and glad to know someone has actually tested a firmware rollback to 2.1 to see if they could get it working again. It saves me the time of doing it myself at this point. But always better to have actual test results than make assumptions. I assume you are using some sort of Proxy-SIM / Turbosim with the phone which no longer works anymore?
I had seen that video before and to be honest, all those steps of shutting down the phone and so forth are not necessary if the current firmware loaded in the phone is still working. The only thing you need to do is hold down the shift key (PC) when you click on the restore button in iTunes. This will already allow you to select the Firmware file from your computer that you wish to restore to.
In theory the idea about the backed up system is a good idea, but doubt it will work. I just can't understand why though it is not possible to downgrade the baseband back to the old version. Seems that file should be available somewhere as well.
I am still assuming a new Proxy-SIM which can work with the new baseband will be forthcoming though in 30-60 days. In the meantime, best to do like me at the moment and get used to your iPhone being an Ipod for the time being I am afraid.

I didn't think the back-up included the firmware and baseband.
If it does, then why can't the 'unlocked' portion be extracted from my unlocked 3G back-up?

Dont think im just giving up but there is another cop out way of getting around all the bugs.
i currently have an orange sim, i pay £35 per month and that includes loads of minutes and texts and free internet (unlimited). i spoke with orange earlier today and they suggested speaking to o2 about unlocking my iphone so i did, o2 said there is nothing i can do and redirected me back to orange (wankers) . i then asked orange what my options were and they replied with you could always sell your contract onto someone else and get an o2 sim.
this means i can sell my running contract to someone for free but they get my old phone and continue paying the 35 per month. which in turn opens up new doors. i went on the o2 website and they are doing a sim only deal for £20 which includes 1000texts 600mins and unlimited online web.
all this taken into account and i save £15 pounds per month and have a fully working unlocked i phone on the supported network. no more issues what so ever.
only issue is selling my old contract and phone, anyone interested in an samsung omnia i900? only 3 months old, but has 15 months left on the contract witch is transferrable.
apart from that im stumped!

I'm glad I haven't taken the risk of updating it to 2.2 before hearing every one's reviews (people who use sim chips). Though I would have inserted my sim card in my Nokia N81 8GB which is not bad at all, actually better than the iPhone in almost everything except for the touch screen and games. That's my opinion though.

i am on rogers wireless in Canada. after upgrading to 2.2 using pwnage tool i could no longer use my sim card "----" signal. so i inserted one of the gevey 3g i bought for backup and now it works on edge only. funny thing is rogers is an official iPhone 3G carrier for apple in canada. another note, i upgraded my phone to 2.2 without updating the baseband. so this suggests that its not the baseband update that disables some sim cards. when i downgrade back to 2.1 my sim card works fine.

That is strange because it sounds like you are actually using the SIM card that came with the phone's contract, correct? So in theory there should be no problem at all with the SIM after upgrading to 2.2, either via pwnage or direct through iTunes.
I still think it is the baseband that disables SIM card working with a Proxy-SIM like your Gevey 3G. In your case it just sounds like there was a glitch somewhere using the pwnage program to update to 2.2, which maybe what made your SIM malfunction after the upgrade.
I think though if you updated to 2.2 via iTunes, which would have updated the baseband as well, and you rolled back to 2.1, that you would not have been able to get the SIM card working again as you did since you would then have had a baseband issue like the rest of us who stepped in mud.
But again, assuming the SIM you are using is the one contracted with the phone, then none of these problems with the upgrade should have occurred anyway it seems since everything is legal. All a bit mysterious sounding.

Thank you so much for the feedback. That's what I expected by the way. I am just going to stick to 2.1 (because I don't really need anything else) and later on when they find out how to fully unlock it without the need of chips, then I'll update to whatsoever firmware is out there.

Over the 15 months your Samsung is going to cost you £525.
The 02 PAYG would be £300.
Sell your Samsung on EBay (had a quick look - should make £300), which pays for your 02 PAYG.
You'll then be in the same position (minus the Samsung) and have a legit iPhone!
I've been using a Gevey 3G sim overlay for some time now. Today I took the plunge and upgraded to 2.2 via PwnageTool. I was really concerned when my phone didn't show any signal bars, something that happened to many others on this (and other) forum(s), whether PwnageTool was used or not.
And then I realized that along with the update, all settings are gone, including the network settings I previously had and with which I was able to use a TurboSIM in the first place. So I did what I had to do and now everything works perfectly, at least on T-Mobile USA.
Settings > General > Network > Enable 3G > [set it to OFF]
Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network > APN > [set it to internet2.voicestream.com]
Settings > General > Network > Data Roaming > [set it to ON]
Restart your phone.
This may even work with the new baseband, so if you "accidentally" upgraded the vanilla way, straight via iTunes & stock firmware, you may want to try. Let us know how it behaves.

Thank you so much. I have a Gevey-3G sim, but I am still afraid that my sim card would stop working even after I use the PwnageTool and upgrade to 2.2. On my Macintosh OSX I chose 'Download Only' so I can now upgrade at any time, but is there like a folder in the computer where I can get the actual ipsw update of 2.2 so I could locate it using PwnageTool and it would customize it so the baseband wouldn't be updated. Anyhow, if you can answer this question, or tell me exactly what to do, I'd be grateful. So for now I have the 2.2 upgrade in iTunes 8 on my Mac because I chose DOWNLOAD ONLY, I have the PwnageTool 2.2 for Mac, and I need the steps. Thank you again.

Time to set the record straight.... The Gevey Sim adapter works with 2.2. In fact it works just fine. This is what I did to seamlessly transition myself to 2.2
The process takes 2 mins....
1st complete the jailbreak via the dev team process. Once the phone's up and running, assuming you never took out the sim in the first place,
1. Go to Settings---->general
2. Scroll down to reset. Tap that
3. Tap Reset Network Settings. Let the phone reboot.
4. When it reboots, go back to settings---->general
5. Tap Network. If you're running T mobile or any other carrier that AT&T, follow these instructions as I have T mobile and this is what I did to get my phone up and running.
6. Turn off 3G, turn on Data Roaming.
7. Tap Cellular Data Network
8. Notice the APN is now blank again. For Tmobile people, enter
epc.tmobile.com
9. leave both Username and Password blank.
10. hit the home button and test your network connection by tapping the weather app!
That is all

I Jbed my phone using my Mac Mini as well. This is what you do...download both the correct 2.2 pwnage tool and the correct 2.2 FW for the 3G phone.
Once its running its simple point and click. Chose your 3G iphone, chose expert mode, chose which custom logos you want or chose to leave them stock (like I did for obvious reasons)...next choose which installer program you want to go with and the apps you'd like to install ( I went with Cydia only)
Finally chose the green arrow to move foward and let it setup your ispw file...
It'll save the file to your documents directory. Open iTunes...it'll show your iPhone....hold down both the apple key and alt then click restore...it should bring up the window asking you to select your file...find the custom one you just made with pwnage tool 2.2 and you're in business

tiguy, if I had the ability to press thank you a hundred times, I wouldn't hesitate. Thank you so much, but one problem, the APN or whatever of T-Mobile is epc.tmobile.com but I don't know my network provider's. :(
*Update* Finished creating the custom ipsw using PwnageTool 2.2, the custom ispw is placed on the desktop. Opened iTunes 8 and it asked me to restore, so I held down the apply key + alt at the same time and then clicked on Restore, then choose the path of where my custom ispw is. Now it's Restoring iPhone Software, it's faster on my computer but it's loading slower on my iPhone, anyway, I hope the network tweaking will work, else I'd just say bye bye to my iPhone haha. Thank you so much again guys, especially tiguy. I'll keep you updated with the results.
*Update #2* It worked! I didn't even have to go to Settings, reset Network Settings and stuff, it just immediately worked and said iPhone is activated. Woot! that's awesome. About the APN, I don't think I need this because I don't use Mobinil's GPRS (Internet Service), but I think that's the only reason why some one would want APN right?
Thank you so much again guys.

Upgraded to 2.2 firmware through iTunes and without PwnageTool 2.2 customization? Nope. At least not for now.

someone please help????????
Ok Guys, I would hate to have my iphone locked because Apple has to keep shutting down people who already paid a lot of money to get one and but the cat & mouse chase is part of the game hope this information will be helpful.
1. If have not yet updated to 2.2 through and would like to this is the only way and this only if your phone is still on 2.1
Go to:
http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1881 (this is for windows)
http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1558 (for mac)
follow the instructions and upgrade now before you do this go and get a sim called the "Virgin Sim"
Trust me guys this is the only one will work, and I have never used a better turbo sim then this, I am using one right now in my iphone 3G 2.2 with all the fuctions working perfectly with full bar, and I have tryied Gavey and i-smart and they both failed the test.
2 This is for people who have all ready updated and now stuck with basband being updated, well I have not tryied it my self but here is a website who claims they have the turbo sim that works on the 2.2 doesnt hurt to try it:
http://www.any-network.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&category_id=3&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=14&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1

Mander...hang tight. There will be a reversible way to bring that baseband back down again. Just gotta be patient
you want baseband # 02.11.07 which was featured in Firmware #2.1

Hi Flix,
I've done this, it's like the one's i've read in other forums.
I'ts like dialing #646#, which will refresh the network settings.
By the way, the result is.....my iPhone 3G when started (after doing your procedure) results to have a signal for just 10 seconds then back to "no service" again. Is there a way to retain the signal once it gets a good one?
Thanks again dude, appreciate helping out people.

This is kind of a wild idea, but could someone who has already updated to v2.2 with the baseband upgrade (thus giving no signal) do a restore of their iphone, then unplug the cable DURING the restore so it crashes. Then do another restore using fw 2.1 and get their prior baseband and signal back? Or would unplugging the unit during the restore, BRICK the phone?

That one looks exactly like the Gevey-3G, but since they made it after the 2.2 firmware (and they clame it supports firmware 2.2) then I think that's the only one available for now. Go ahead and buy it.

I don't know, but I do know the TurboSIM I bought about 4 weeks ago doesn't work with it.
I ordered a new TurboSIM yesterday from THESE GUYS (http://www.unlockediphone.info/). (you can pay through PayPal - PHEW!)
We'll soon find out if they are full of ****. I've had good luck in the past with TurboSIM's, I didn't have one issue for 14 months using one with my iPhone 2G.
This is my 2G iPhone:

This is how you know which firmware you are on. I am far to tired to bother taking my iPhone 3G out of the box to take a screenshot and post it here. Here's my 2G, to show you all where you locate what firmware you are on.
For your iPhone 3G...
Baseband 02.28.00 it bad!
Baseband 02.11.07 is good!
-----------------------------------------
You cannot go back to 02.11.07, if you went to 02.28.00. I know this to be fact, I tried everything at this stage.
-----------------------------------------
The only solution to a SIM unlock if you are on the "BAD" firmware (bad meaning locked like a prison) is a newer TurboSIM that supports this firmware.
I am yet to believe they exist, we'll see if this new one does the trick. I have my doubts, there's so many bull****ters on the web. Though when I did encounter a similar situation way back when with my iPhone 2G the TurboSIM I purchased at the time actually worked. From a dodgy chinese site called Spider-Foot mind you, who no longer stocks the things, since about 2 weeks ago. And they don't work either, they only worked on iPhone 2G. I remain cautious to get my hopes up.
DAMN YOU APPLE!!! :(

I have made bold the important parts.

Hello,
We are supporting all versions including 2.2 custom firmware.
The 3Gsim is proven to work world wide for any GSM network.
- If your iphone is Brand new and has already a 2.2 firmware running,
you will not be able to unlock right now.
- If you did the latest update with apple firmware 2.2 your iphone
will be locked again.
Our team is already working on the new updated 3Gsim unlock
which will support apples latest 2.2 update. All members will receive
the item as soon as we release it. It is the matter of time when
the new 3Gsim will be available to our customers.
Let us know if you have further questions.

Best regards,
Jane
Yet, that didn't stop them putting "2.2" with a big green check-mark on their site did it? Bastards.
They better deliver that new "FREE" SIM like they say they will. Call me a sceptic, but I have a feeling it will be a................................................. .......... while............
Thanks for the tips, Irelan3G.
To my understanding , there is no need to use turbosim for 1st gen iPhone 2G. One can simply use software to unlock and jailbreak it.
I also have 1st gen iPhone 2G. I unlocked and jailbreaked it with ZiPhone when it was still with firmware 1.1.4. Later on I upgraded it to firmware 2.0.2, unlocked and jailbreaked it with WinPawn 2.5. I haven't upgrade the firmware to 2.2, yet, though.
I need to figure out the best way to upgrade the 1st gen iPhone 2G from firmware 2.0.2 to 2.2. If anyone knows the best software to use for the job, please post it here and I would be greatly appreciate it.
I just bought iPhone 3G. So far, I heard that we can only jailbreak it with software, not unlock. We still have to use turbosim to unlock it. Is that right? What would be the recommended software to jailbreak and recommended turbosim to unlock then?
Thanks.

I just plugged it into iTunes and clicked update. The Apple way. My 2G iPhone is still unlocked, but no longer jailbroken. I don't care about it been jailbroken though, as that 'can' make the phone crash more.
If you were a Mac user custom updating the Firmware is easier. Actually you could try QuickPwn for Windows (http://www.theiphoneguru.org/wp-content/uploads/QuickPwn22.zip).
