View Full Version : Got a STORM, not impressed

So i jumped ship and plumped for the Storm.......
Had it since last friday an im taking it back tommorrow.
So heres my opinion for what its worth,
The screen on the storm and picture quality in video in my opinion is better than the iphone, however the media player is not as sleek and can be annoying,
didnt feel there was much difference between the cameras, just flash on the storm, video capture was a nice touch though,
The keyboard was nice to use but i felt the iphone was abetter overall experience, also you cant see what youve pressed as it highlights but it is covered by your finger.
the click screen is a nice touch, but once again got fed up in the end, not as responsive as the iphone and sometimes didnt work at all,
The apps were s**t, the volume of music on earphones was way too quiet for me, i like my music loud, however the speaker was better than the iphone. it was clearer, crisper and louder.
So what was the dealbreakers? Why is it going back?
1. Battery life is shocking, i mean really shocking, check out the vodaphone forums, everyones complaining, not even lasting me half a day with moerate use.
2. Browser is slow, web pages dont load up in the correct format, no wifi, weak 3g signal compared to iphone.
3. 2mm gap around screen, was going crazy thinking of all the crap going into the phone.
4. Slow rotation, Slow menu pop up, Just Slow slow slow!!!
Anyway, in my very humble opinion rim really messed up, this was an excellent chance to offer up an iphone beater, this phone is nice to look at, the screen is amazing, but in a rush to get it out for xmas, they forgot to test it beforing giving it to customers.
So back to my 16gb 3g baby, sorry i ever doubted you in the first place.

I was never impressed by the Storm, or its commercials. I've had numerous "smartphones" from WM and blackberry, all of which had copy & paste, mms, video, etc. and I don't miss those features at all. The iphone has it right IMO, ease of use, no headaches. Those "other" phones are a pain in the rear. If you really want all those features, then jailbreak. Trust me, it's no different then having to hack into a WM phones registry to add/change features so the phone is actually useable. Yep, I said it, those phones aren't perfect out of the box either, actually, I spent more time "hacking" into my other phones to try and make them useful than I ever did actually using them. Oh, and my iphone is NOT jailbroken, works just fine the way it is...what a relief.

Well, it's understandable that there will be bugs, but come on. For those that bought your iPhone back when the firmware was 1.0.0 or 1.0.1, do you remember that many issues with the iPhone? I don't either. It was love at first touch.
I just don't think anyone is going to come out with a touch based phone that is that comparable to the iphone for at least another year. (and of course Apple will continue to move forward.
The only beef I have with Apple is ignoring some of the most basic requests from it's users for standard feature.

Yeah, I wouldn't have bothered with the first release myself, didn't even do that with the iPhone. But I wouldn't ever go to another phone expecting the interface to be as good as the iPhone, this is just what Apple do best and they pour far more resources and talent into it than any other manufacturer ever would, best bet is to wait for these collaborative efforts like Android and the new Symbian Foundation stuff to get their feet on the ground.
As somebody who's studied ergonomics both as a computer student and as a psychology student I can tell that most of these interfaces are built by computer engineers. In computing it's all about giving the user what they want in as few clicks as possible but in psychology it's all about the learning process and predictability, making sure the user gets what they expect and they understand what is going on. As a Microsoft user I think they seem to be getting the idea now but they're kinda stuck with interfaces that everybody knows how to use and I think they're scared to be too bold. I'm hoping Windows Mobile 7 will be the next decent interface besides Apples.

Awesome review. I really wanted to hear that from some one in this forum not just an anonymous guy who I found after googling. The no-WiFi feature itself shocked me, that's going to be horrible, at least for me, because in my country 3G is very slow and very very very expensive, and it's going to be really hard to even IM using that.

Yeah, lack of wifi was a stupid decision. Apparently some guy got told by a Vodafone rep that they did it to try and sell data plans but if you're going to omit some vital feature and try to charge people for an alternative you don't remove something that's become totally standard on phones now. I wouldn't touch a phone without wifi now, I rely on it to make up for the crappy receptions I get in my house and 3G is no alternative to a 10MB connection.
To be honest though I expect it is Verizon that caused the lack of wifi. I know Americans tend to suffer and the hands of the networks but here in the UK all this crippling of the bluetooth to get you to send MMS, stuff like that doesn't happen so I think this decision will hurt sales across the globe.

i picked up a Storm this morning, and while it's a decent phone, I would not recommend anybody to ditch their iPhone for it unless you need Blackberry email. In my most humble opinion, typing on it isn't near as good as the iPhones and trying to enter text in text boxes on forums or in programs is rather cumbersome. There is alot to like about it, but I would not trade my Bold for it nor would I trade an iPhone for it :D

That is really based on the technical specs, don't you think?
So here's what came up when I did a comparison between the Storm 9500 (which is the current one by Vodafone, there's also a 9530 but that's not even out yet) and the iPhone 3G.

All Apple products are awesome, at least most. What pisses me off the most is when I buy something for X price for instance, and then less than a week later a newer version of that product I bought came out and has better features and for the same X price. (Let's say X is the price of the product). So wouldn't that be a shame? Because that happened to me when I bought the 16 GB Black iPod Touch, a week later the 2nd generation came out and for the exact same price. Also happened when I bought my MacBook Pro, my father bought me it from BestBuy, NY exactly two weeks before the aluminum one came out and FOR THE SAME PRICE. When I found that out, it was probably the worst day I've ever had in years.

Lol you know me I'm a fruit loving crack(berry) addict. I may be hard on the iphone but I still love it. If apple would let loose of the reins, allow blackberry connect and all the other gripes we all know it would be hard to beat the iphone. Bold>iphone>storm They all have their strong points but the bold's keyboard still amazes me and I've been using a bold for a long time...since way before it was released

no smart phone is going to trump the iPhone except the next-gen iPhone, all these companies are trying to take over the iPhone but not coming close :)

I jumped ship yesterday. Wasn't solely based on dumping the iPhone, but merely that I didn't get service with AT&T and my job allows for me to add a plan onto Verizon and get a discount. The Storm is no iPhone, and I still believe so after about a days use. It's still a great device though. It does what I need to do. Texting isn't bad at all. The lag seen in the videos is from older software.
I think Apple is lucky RIM and Verizon rushed this thing out. But I think were still waiting on a true iPhone competitor.

Maybe the Nokia 5800 Xpress Music? The 'coming soon touch screen Nokia device? I think it can be a pretty good competitor to the iPhone.
The data plan and no wifi is why I left verizon,:embarrassed: I was worried about the coverage with ATT but so far it has rocked, I am 100% satisfied with the iphone and ATT.

I have the Bold, Storm and both iPhones. And the Storm even brand new on its first released OS is so much more stable my iPhone is even on 2.1. The Storms browser never crashes, you can actually upload and download from sites, and is a much more reliable phone. I love my iphone but it has its place, I prefer my blackberries much more.

It's interesting to hear the opposite side of this subject - I just switched to AT&T from Verizon yesterday (I was using the LG Dare) and had the option of instead getting the Storm. Based on how poorly Verizon treated the Dare I did not want to be part of the same thing with the Storm so I jumped carriers and I am glad I did.
The iPhone is AMAZING and I don't think any phone can touch it right now. The Storm is certainly a nice phone but Verizon's only plus is their network...their decisions with phones are horrible.

Yup. That's true. I can view ANY WEBSITE I want through Safari on iPhone and iPod Touch in full resolution and everything. Unlike other phones (Nokia N95, N81, HTC Tytn II, etc.) their browsers suck and they are really really and I mean really slow in loading websites.

Interesting you say the picture and video is better on the strom. From what I have read the iPhone is capable of displaying a significantly larger amount of colors.
I think the display of the Storm *seems* better because of its higher resolution.
What gets me is that the screen is not even in a 16x9 aspect ratio. And I'm a strict AR guy. I love that I can watch TV shows or movies on my iPhone and it fills up the screen like HDTV.
On the Storm, if you fill up the screen the aspect ratio is closer to 4:3. I have seen a picture of a Storm playing a 16x9 movie but it needs a black bar on the top and to the right to make it happen. :frown:

My father only stayed for a week in the USA and then came back to Egypt. He bought it the last day before he traveled back you know. If he had stayed two weeks more, he could have definitely done that, or even less than two weeks. So sad right? When I went to the States (I came back like three weeks ago), I didn't even try to do it because I know they wouldn't take it back because it's like three months old now but still with the BestBuy warranty and receipt.

so i finally got my hands on the storm. Here's my view on the phone:
The display of the phone is just simply beautiful. Same thing with the design. I played around with the camera and of course the 3.2 really stands out better then the 2.0. Sending mms is pretty simple and the video recording is a bonus. The clicking on the phone is not bad at all it just would take sometime to get used to. Web browsing on the other hand doesn't even compare to the iphone. The iphone puts it to shame. From what the rep told me they (blackberry/verizon) already had a recall on the phones for shipping them with faulty os. The phone is buggy as hell and the touch screen is nowhere near as responsive as the iphone. Sometimes i would tap on a icon and nothing would happen. The rep said it had something to do with the os and that an update would later fix that.
Where i stand right now the iphone is a better phone due to it's buggy os. With a simple update i really see this phone outshinning our beloved 3G.
Only thing i can say is please!!!!!! please apply release an mms app!!!

I played around with it this weekend, just to keep my options open. I haven't been too happy with the AT&T coverage and the call failures and dropped calls I've been getting.
So, after messing with the display version, I decided that this was a device that I could get use to and that I like. I saw several video and written reviews so I knew what I was getting myself into.
The OS still has some slight bugs and it lags from time to time, but I expected this and I also expect the problem to be resolved in future updates.
In comparison to the iphone, like others have mentioned the web browser on the iphone is way better. It's a lot easier to surf the internet.
The screens are pretty close in competition, as far as the quality of video.
The music player is nice, it lags in some areas, I'm hoping they fix that.
Typing on the storm isn't that hard. I've gotten around to typing fast on it, after 2 days. The screen on the iphone is much more sensitive, but it all depends on preference. Some might not care either way and some want to hit the keys harder and some might hate that idea.
The fact that you have to pay Verizon to use the turn by turn GPS sucks.
The lack of applications is also a negative at the moment, although I know developers will start designing programs, themes, etc for the Storm soon.
Emailing is great on the Storm.
Text message interface on iphone is better. I like the ichat look of text conversations. It's a bit more boring on the Storm.
I do love the interface and the way you go to find all the applications on the Storm. I like that it's more versatile for documents and that you can assign ringtones directly from your music library with just a click.
Both iphone and the storm feel great in your hand.
I like having a removable battery, a changeable micro-sd card that comes with 8gb with the option to upgrade to 16gb.
Plus the coverage in my area is better with Verizon, the 3G speeds are excellent, better than AT&T's.
Leaving Wi-Fi out is a mistake, Blackberry should have included that feature. But again, I believe this was more so Verizon's option.
You really can't compare these two phones any more than that. They aren't the same thing. They have similarities, but they function differently and it all depends on someone's preference.
Just like some hate the iphone, some will hate the Storm and others will love both devices.
I personally love both devices, but I just wanted better coverage. Wish I could have taken my iphone to a different service.
The Storm is the best touch screen phone since the iphone.
I have no doubts that by next summer, Apple will come with something more revolutionary. I always give them the edge on being creative and innovative.
They just need to provide the users with the basic features of other phones, but I know Apple has their way of doing things.
Just wanted to present an ex iphone user and iphone lover's take on the Blackberry Storm.
The Storm has tons of potential. It's good for business purposes, yet it remains fun to play with.

Stopped by the Verizon store today and played with it.
I told the guy...``so this is the iPhone killer"? He said ``...that's what they say"...
Just looked at him and said ``not yet" and left.
Not close to the intuitiveness of the iPhone. The touch "click" is actually annoying. Not impressed.

BigCix,
I wish you could have taken The Storm home and really checked it out. I am sure you would have had a much better experience. The Storm has meany features that you may not have gotten a chance to try. Say for instance the screen lag when touched you speak of. There is a sensitivity setting that is user adjustable. The model you tried may have been set to low.
The browser can also be tweaked to your liking to render Java more properly. No offense to you BigCix but a short demo in store will never show you just how great The Storm truly is. The Storm has many user adjustable features. I applaud RIM/BlackBerry for an OS that you can make "Yours" by all the tweaking available to the end user.
The other poster that mentioned the screen ratio during movie play back. Sure video does not fill the entire screen (could be that the demo video Babylon was formated) but the small space it doesn't cover is not even really an issue (at least for me). I think the poster was a bit to picky and just looking for any excuse to down The Storm. What he left out was the robust sound quality from the built in rear speaker during video play back. You will find no barely audible tiny speaker on the Storm. You also can enjoy a movie without the need for headphones or holding the device close to ones ear just to hear (all of you know what I'm talking about).
To truly love The Storm one must take it home and get to know it. I have had mine three days and as I said in another post. I have yet to see a bug, glitch, crash, software or hardware failure. I can't speak for anyone elses Storm but mine is the most stable as I've seen ever in a mobile device. Mark

I had the opportunity of playing with a Storm on launch morning. While I commend RIM for accomplishing a ton with this device, the gaps between the screen and the housing really scared me. In fact, if you look into the crack above the buttons, you can actually see the PCB that the buttons are soldered to. I am not convinced that the Storm will be very durable.

Even though the "thankers" have not owned or tried the device themselves they welcome the bashing.
Mark
Swag I understand where your coming from. The phone is beautiful inside as well as out. I would love to have that phone but I guess it's a waiting process now. I give BB two updates before they finally get that os working the right way.
I just read this thread from stem to stern. I usually just scan through this many posts, but I am really interested in this subject, so I read the whole thing carefully. I have to commend a lot of you. I have been a member of several Blackberry forums for a long time, and I have to tell you, they are generally way more one-sided than a lot of you.
One of the most interesting and really true was Mark's (Swagger) last post where he mentioned that you can't just try a phone like these out in the store for a little while, you really need to take it home and give it the time it deserves. That is word for word the exact thing I told many on the Blackberry forums about the Iphone when alot of them laughed at the fact that I was using one. I got my Iphone for free, and wasn't sure how much I would really like it (I truly love it!).
Another really funny one was Dave's (psylichon) post when he basiclly said that people with fat fingers were "meatheads with sausage fingers". Doesn't bother me as I have small thin fingers (probably another reason I love the Iphone keyboard). I was surprised more people didn't jump on him for that, it made me laugh out loud.
Last but not least, was chrismmm's last post commenting that the OP might be considered a moron if he isn't loaded. I'm not sure I understand that one, did he mean "stoned" when he said "loaded"? If so, then that "might" make more sense. :-)
Anyway, I thank you all for the interesting thread, I love the 3GIphone and have no doubt that either the Bold or the Storm are at least close to as good if not even possibly better. I won't be changing carriers anytime soon, but may pick up a Bold, or an unlocked Storm (I'm sure that will exist sometime in the near future) for free, and if and when I do, I'll find out which is better in my opinion.

RE: The Original Post
Wow, it seems that all you have to do is bash another maker other than Apple's mobile device and you immediately shoot to super stardom in thanks. Even though the "thankers" have not owned or tried the device themselves they welcome the bashing. I think some are scared to try something new because they are affraid they might just like it more than the iPhone and get kicked out of the "Fanboy Club". Mark
That is rather odd, so many thanks for a review of a non apple product,... Ahh, the wonderful complexities of the human ego
My guess is that there is a sublime message being sent here because of your thread touting the Storm over the iPhone. Way to stand out Mark and be different. :2cool:

Wow - is all I have to say. Thanks for the post. I was really debating on dumping my 3g over this, but I think you sealed the deal.
I haven't had a chance to check a Storm out (can't find one!), but I did see the site that showed it disassembled and the one thing that worries me about it is that the switch for the push-screen clicking is a simple membrane contact switch -- you know, the kind that's usually behind plastic that fails a lot. I hope there's a good warranty on that puppy and excellent support because I predict a lot of click-failure. I am left to wonder -- if that fails, what can you do with the Storm?
As far as Storm versus iPhone, I don't really have much of an opinion. I see it as Mac vs. PC in many ways; two decent tools to get a job done - and there will be strong opinions on either side, though in the end, the job does get done.

You are right The Storm was such a dud that it is sold out all over the country. The New York Times thought it was such a dud that it wrote a glowing article telling Apple to get an umbrella. It also is so much of a dud that it has ALL the features all of you I wish I had MMS, Cut & Paste, louder volume, a user changeable battery, changeable/removable memory, a file structure, ability to download from Internet, separate email icons on home screen, a browser that doesn't constantly crash, bluetooth file transfer, bluetooth stereo, tethering and the list goes on and on iPhone nuts keep crying for.
All RIM had to do was put the name Apple and the Apple logo on it and most of you would have called The Storm the best thing since sliced bread. Please stop being so closed minded. Explore new worlds, new ideas, new products. Don't just label something garbage because Steve Jobs is not selling it. Give credit where credit is due (and RIM does deserve credit) The sad part is most of the bashing is coming from ones who haven't even held one in their hand let alone own one.
I used to be one of the biggest BlackBerry critics around. I am not that foolish though to not explore new improved offerings from RIM just because I didn't care for their previous models or don't see an Apple logo on it. I live by my current signature. It may just be a statement that all need to think about...Mark
BTW: Everyone keeps crying about the gap on the sides of the screen. Also that the click screen will fail. So what!!! For a measly 5 bucks a month and fifty dollar deductible Verizon will insure it. I don't care what gets under the screen or if the click fails. I will just return it and get another. Has anyone ever stopped to think how much crap enters the iPhone via the headphone jack (which BTW is upward). And BTW is NOT insured by AT&T...Give me a break please.

I still have my iPhone and love it still. I was just saying that everyone is crying for all the features from Apple that the Storm has. Yet they would rather do without just because it lacks a bitten Apple symbol. If it's that serious people can put their Apple sticker on the back of The Storm and change the wallpaper to some apple logo. LOL Mark

After reading a lot of the comments in this thread I decided to go to another Verizon store today and spend some time with the new Storm. I thought maybe my finders were just fat yesterday! :p
Anyway I spent about an hour there asked a lot of questions and frankly folks this device is just way too difficult to use. I'd have been in seventeen car accidents trying to type one line of text. It's very difficult to type on this device.
Also the phone is just not intuitive. Intuitive? Yes like the iPhone (which I don't not own). You have to know way too many features and commands and menus just to operate the Storm.
So, sadly the Storm is not for me. I'll wait for the next generation iPhone and hope AT&T and Apple can get this reception/dropped calls things straightened out. If so, I'm in!

Verizon has a thirty day no questions asked return policy. You also are not charged for minutes used (provided you did not go over the plan minutes you choose) if you change your mind in the first thirty days. You could have taken it home gave it an intensive workout, got to know it better then decided to keep it or return it. If you return you get a full refund and owe nothing. It doesn't get any better than that.
Also just out of curiosity. Are you aware The Storm has three different keyboards and can be used in portrait or landscape??? Mark

This thread is out of controll. It's fine to have an opinion but just because people aren't hailing the storm as the iPhone killer or they just don't like the storm doesn't nessesarily mean they are an "Apple fanboy" or obsessed just because it doesn't have an apple logo and come from Cupertino. Get over yourself and I suggest getting rid of the stupid stereotype of a person being an apple fanboy because they have a different opinion about a non apple device.
Have you ever once thought that maybe... Just maybe many of the people who own an iPhone are quite content with it's good and bad? Also because they are content with their iPhone it doesn't mean they have to like or hate another device of decent competition.
People like you are the ones who make it seem like we hail the device or any apple product like it's the holygrail or as you put it "best thng since sliced bread". The fact is the iPhone does many things vey well and the pathetic attempts of competition (instinct, dare, etc) are lackluster at best. The g1 was a nice gineuea pig from HTC and the storm so far has been the most admirable competition. From reading your posts in this thread you come across as if you want us to hail our device like nothing can come close. I think what you're misinterpreting is that some people are happy with the iPhone and they don't really see the competition "killing" the iPhone as many have or had hoped.
Now in response to the pathetic press reviews and media hailings as well as apple needing an umbrella: first off 10million and more iPhones. It has some of the top reviews and that said yes it does have it's shortcomings. For ease of use and performance not much comes close to the iPhone...the storm is new and so is the g1 they will get better with updates. Don't forget the iPhone pretty much changed the standard of what the mobile device is.
Lastly that little thing about Apple needing an umbrella? Last I checked Apples only get better with more water.

Hopefully one day in the United States unlocked phones will become the norm instead of the exception. I feel that the consumer should be able to buy whatever phone they choose and use it with whatever carrier they choose. I would recommend getting a Bold instead of the Storm. I was messing around with one for 15 minutes yesterday and I hated every minute of it. The lag on there is nothing compared to 2.0. I am getting a bold. I haven't even played with a live storm, but the bold is VERY impressive. Obviously A lot of time, thought, and care went into the design of the bold. I wouldn't switch to verizon anyways, but I may have considered holding out for a GSM storm.

This is a post I wrote over on the Crackberry forums....it applies here and I didn't want to retype the whole thing.
Call me what you will but here's my story.
Look at some of my other posts to see where I'm coming from (if you care) but I don't have a preference to a brand.
I had the Storm since Saturday and personally I didn't like it. I had trouble typing, it was slow and I felt like I had to go through 5 screens just to accomplish something. I got pretty frustrated and I really wanted to love the phone - I wanted it to be the all-in-one solution for me. It just wasn't and I suppose I wasn't patient enough to wait for more updates. I will be traveling a lot over the next few months so I wanted something to work today.
I also didn't like that fact that if I wanted to use the GPS in the VZ Navigator it was 10 more bucks a month.
What was important to me is described in another thread called "The Storm is Like Steven Hawking..." Check it out or don't but it's a quick real world experience I had with my Storm.
So I returned it this morning and I exchanged it for a iphone (got them both at Bestbuy)
So here's the skinny for me:
I like my iphone. I have already downloaded about 25 apps that I can see myself using on a regular basis. I don't care about the fishing games or other glamour type stuff - I just want to be able to check scores, find movie times, Google on the go, etc.
The maps are pretty cool - when I was driving on the highway tonight I started it up and I saw my little push pin zipping along the highway - little things impress me.
What I miss about the Storm. The call clarity is pretty phenomenal - I can honestly say that talking on the Storm is the best cell phone calls I had ever made. When I got my iphone home I goofed around on the app store and things like that but the call quality is crap on ATT.
Email. It's no secret that RIM dominates anything out there on email. I had several accounts - they updated instantly, just about perfect in my book.
The iphone email does lack if you don't go and get their mobileme software. I got a 60 day trial tonight and it was a tiny bit confusing to set up but it's working now and my email delays around about 1 minute.
All and all - take what you read with a grain of salt and consider the sources. You will get both kinds.
1. The loyal Blackberry user that feels that RIM can do no wrong - they will blindly follow anything that is put out and trash anything and everything else on the market. They refuse to admit that there are shortcomings and dismiss these problems to stay loyal.
2. The loyal Blackberry user that hold RIM to such a crazy high standard that they nit-pick the littlest things. It's a new technology for RIM and because it deviates from the smooth experiences they have had with past devices - RIM will get a raw deal when it comes to minor problems.
3. Then there's the level headed person that just reads these forums and throws in their 2 cents for what its worth. No agenda, just trying to be helpful.
There are a lot of 3s - but some 1s and 2s are out there too.
Am I an iphone fanboy? I don't know (can you be after 10 hours?) I don't plan on dancing through the streets and singing the praises of a phone. But I also don't plan on defending it any chance I get.
My work phone is a BB (not the storm) and my phone fun is the iphone.
The right thing to do is exercise the 30 day policy that both companies have and decide for yourself. Good luck
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have been loving my iphone but the battery life is complete crap.....but today I upgraded to 2.2 and I also have been closing out Safari and other programs. Perhaps me running 7 safari pages in the background was contributing to my poor batter life. I'm glad to be over on the apple side of things.

I played with my friends Storm for an hour yesterday and it was just OK, I thought it could not even compare itself to the iphone. I like Verizon better than AT*T so if I had to go back to Verizon I would most likely buy the Storm.
The plus side was it had mms and video. I also really liked the camera, picture quality, flash. On the down side, I hated the screen clicking, the wrong apps would open and the screen was just too busy and cluttered and pushing all those buttons to get anywhere or get back to where you were. The iphone is a pure art form of a phone, nothing I have seen yet can even come close. I would choose the iphone over the storm any day.

:gasp: And I thought the GPS was one of the weak points of the phone.
I thought the Storm OS seemed like a port of the Bold - to work with the touchscreen. RIM should really redo the whole OS. I'm thinking: the old BlackBerry wasn't broke, so why "fix" it?
A lot of people are like you - BB in left pocket and iPhone in other pocket. Unfortunately, not any one phone can do it all.

Looks like there is already a Storm killer out there. The
Samsung Omnia is said to give faster performance and user experience in the early reviews. Plus it has WiFi.
This might also be THE luxury phone. I've seen $600 price tags for this. It's got awesome specs. But, I don't expect this to be in the $200 like these other phones.
I'm not sure I get the whole "email is better on BB" argument anymore -- I have Exchange set up on my iPhone and I get emails immediately -- and I mean immediately - even before Outlook or OWA get them. I've compared my email display to a BB and it was no contest - even the BB owners had to agree. They were also a little miffed that I could view emailed faxes from our fax server -- which they cannot do.
Personally, I think that RIM felt they had to make the Storm or risk losing business customers to the iPhone. I'm not sure that everyone at RIM is behind that decision; probably thinking that they are trying to be all things for all people and forgetting their core competency.
I'm a business traveler, life = email, phone, and Internet - and I'm happy with the iPhone on all three counts. It's not perfect, but it more than gets the job done. I don't see the attraction to the Storm unless you're a BB fanboy and want to get your pseudo-iPhone craving fix.

It will get a LOT better when we can edit and create MS Word and Excel files, which is soon. I forget the company which is developing that.

I really have to agree with you. I loved my Blackberrys, but now that I have exchange properly set up on my Iphone, It is just as good as any Blackberry I've ever had re: email. I had a hard time setting it up as my IT people weren't very cooperative, and that's one thing Blackberry doesn't require as BIS can usually figure it out with just the email address. Now that it is properly set up, exchange works as well if not better than with a Blackberry.
As for everything else, I think RIM will have to work at it for a while to beat the Iphone.

Anybody who says email is as good on the iphone is simply trying to convince themselves and others of that. Try uploading or downloading a non picture file as an attachment. Yea didn't think so. I have exchange set up on my iphone and while good it still doesn't compare. Sure for my corporate email it pushes but what about my fios account at home. Or my gmail account? Also having to slide to unlock to see if I have an email when I get an immediate notification on my Bold is just ridiculous. The iphone still has no file management access which is its biggest weakness. There is no way it can compete with the email of blackberry until then. That's not to say there is nothing to like about email on the iphone. It is presented better than on any other phone but when it won't perform all the functions I need that is when I get frustrated. I like my iphone a lot I've got pissed off and gotten rid of it several times. I had 4 v1 iphones and am now on my 2nd 3g. And I'm not a particular enthusiast of any one brand, maybe that's where I'm different than most here. The iphone excels in many areas and most other phones don't come close in these areas but when it comes to email BB still can't be touched.

I get and look at non-picture attachements all the time. PDFs, spreadsheets, Word docs...
Uploading is another story - but then I don't create any of those docs on the iPhone.

My personal email (IMAP) pushes well - Gmail should be a no-brainer.

OK, possibly - what do you access with it on the BB? What's the benefit? I had file system access on my Treo and can't think of more than one or two occasions that I needed it with email.

I completely agree with all of your writing. BlackBerry email is KING!!! I won't even mention all the features available in the BlackBerry email program that iPhone is lacking. The list would be toooooooooo long. Anyone who thinks the iPhone's email capabilities can compare to BlackBerry must surely not know how to use all the BlackBerry email features. Or as you stated in your post is trying to convince theirself that iPhone email is better. Simply not true!!! I will say again BlackBerry email is KING!!! Mark:gasp:

I'm sure alot of people have to keep their phones on silent at work such as I. The faint vibe is hardly heard when you get an email even if you are near your phone. If I'm not near it and I receive an email I have no notification that it is there waiting. With the Bold I have a flashing LED which, whether silent or not still lets me know I have received a new email, IM, facebook or myspace alert, etc...
OK, possibly - what do you access with it on the BB? What's the benefit? I had file system access on my Treo and can't think of more than one or two occasions that I needed it with email.
Just the simple fact alone that I can use it to access files I want to attach and send through email is enough for me to consider it a plus.
And I haven't even touched on BlackBerry messenger or PIN messaging, but i was replying to a post about email so I will not go that far.

I do somewhat agree with you Joe on the Storm and why RIM released it. It does appear that it was a reactionary measure, however it has been said that the Storm was in development before the iPhone was even released. Not sure I believe that though.
But it is all about options. I like the Storm alot however I will not go as far as to say it is a better phone than the iPhone. But it does give those that have become accustomed to having BlackBerry email the option to have a touchscreen phone. For the most part it suceeds. Sure Apple fans will say it is crap because they exhibit a trait of saying everything is crap compared to their iPhones. The truth is the Storm is not crap. If anything it is the best touchscreen out there other than the iPhone. It has its flaws but what phone doesn't? Once you get the typing down on the Storm there is no doubt it is a much more functional device than the iPhone.
You Apple guys should be happy that there are competitors out there trying to raise the bar instead of blindly denouncing the competition. The only way that Apple is going to improve the iPhone instead of just sitting there and counting their billions of dollars is to have competition out there offering something that they don't. .

LOL, alright. Email can't be touched on a BB...actually, messaging on a BB in general is great due to the fact that IM apps are kept running in the background and all the keyboard shortcuts that cut down the time that it takes to reply to a text/email.

Aggie,
I disagree with you in this aspect. The iPhone is a great phone surely. The Storm based on features Trumps the iPhone ten fold. The only plus I see with the iPhone is the browser (which not all that great due to constant crashes) and the Storms browser is no slouch (also has never crashed, stock or Opera). Pound for Pound like I said before the Storm leaves the iphone in the dust. I do agree that people on here are not open minded enough to admit that. If the Storm had an Apple logo people would be praising it until the cows come home...Mark

Mark,
The only reason I say it is not better than the iPhone now is it is still a little laggy, even after the .75 update. I wish RIM would have put more thought into a separate touch OS that was optimized for the Storm vs. pretty much slapping the same BB OS on it. i type better on the storm than the iPhone but I find it having a hard time keeping up with me when I'm typing. Also, as I've stated on everythingberry.com, I have concerns with the click screen longevity and the gaps around the screen accumulating dirt and moisture.
Then again, I rarely keep a phone over 6 months so longevity may be a moot point in my case :tounge:
But at any rate, I do really like the Storm. It's RIM's first attempt at anything like this and I think they've done an excellent job. You gotta give it a pass on some of its flaws just the same as the arguement people made about the iPhone being Apple's first attempt at a phone.

To each their own. I personally have never played with a bold or a storm so I don't really have an opinion, however I have read a ton of reviews and it seems almost every review that I've read has the Bold as the better BB device. I haven't heard/read many good things about the Storm, except from you and the commercials...

My choice is definitely the Bold. I had the Bold, bought a Storm and switched back to the Bold after a couple weeks. Not that the Storm is bad, its just a different device and the Bold was more practical for my daily use.
maybe I should have worded that different. download and save said attachment to phone. Send a video clip or save a video clip from your email? Song? Ringtone?
Ah, OK, gotcha now. I guess I don't get terribly excited about that because I don't have the need really. I generally need to view, not save. If I save, it's gonna be on the laptop/desktop for editing.
Some people do not prefer to use Gmail. Most accounts such as fios and comcast do not push as far as I know.
Couldn't say. I have my own mail server, so I control that.

Actually we are opposites here - my iPhone is either in my hand or on my belt, so I always hear/feel it. I can see the LED advantage if you are going to have it on a desk, etc. I never really looked at the LED on my Treos for that very reason. About the only time it came in handy was if I ignored something and later saw the LED when I took the Treo out for something and said, "Ah! I forgot about that text message"..
Just the simple fact alone that I can use it to access files I want to attach and send through email is enough for me to consider it a plus.
I just forward the email I got the attachment in. Even that doesn't happen all that often.
And I haven't even touched on BlackBerry messenger or PIN messaging, but i was replying to a post about email so I will not go that far.
Well, do tell. I'm not up on BB features since I have never owned one. What I always hear is "I get my email instantly" - which I get with the iPhone.

Yes you are correct but most of the bad press is coming from people who have never even held a Storm let alone own one. Secondly the other source of bad press is Apple fanatics. I don't understand it though they cry about things the iPhone doesn't have. The Storms has all of what they want on the iPhone and more. Yet they just can't bring their selves to get one since it's missing an Apple logo. I love Apple products but not to the point I am going to miss out on features I need just to support them...Mark

This thread is funny.
Anyway, glad y'all like your new phones, and they fit your needs. I played around with both the Bold and Storm. Good phones. But, I am content with my iPhone. I don't need the email functionaility. To me, it is just a nice perk. I have a tablet PC w/wireless card that I carry around for work when I am on the road (paid by work). That serves as the only means I need to access work email. I might check work email on my iPhone via our external website access (a nice feature for us in the field), but all attachement work I need needs to be done on the Tablet anyway. My personal email (GMail) doesn't contain any documents I need to store (which would still be ince, I agree, to have on the iPhone...they will get there).
Anyway, the point is every phone has its upside over the other in various realms. No phone clearly beats out the other, unless you focus on a certain sub category of the phone itself. And, while there is not doubt fan boys on ALL sides of this discussion (don't leave out the BB fanboys here), each have a legitimate claim in why they feel their phone is better. Without competition on the market, owning a gadget wouldn't be as fun now would it?
I feel my iPhone is better b/c it suits my needs and wants. THat is not to say the BB Bold or Storm is a bad phone, but just not what I need or want, per se.
Enjoy your toys, gents. I know I do.

I respect your view well said. My posts are unbiased (and I'm sure Aggies are to). We have both (iPhone and BlackBerry) and the truth is the BlackBerry's (Bold and Storm) just have lots more usable features. However if like you said you don't need all of that. Then I see your point of being content with the iPhone. Mark
I hold out hope the iPhone will respond, and I am sure they will one day, with a new version that has a little more depth. Initially, they certain stole a lot of our amazement with the appeal, simplistic and user friendly functionality, app store, and Apple feel. They still do for a lot of us. But, it is not secret there are a lot of iPhone users that are left wanting. APple knows this, and honestly I still think it is a future marketing tool for them. They didn't leave them out by accident. They know they can continue to capture market share with each year's release (I see them bringing out a new one every year, almost like they did with iPods).
I am an iPod junkie before anything. That is why I side with the iPhone. And, I like the browsers, and the screen, and many other things.
WE shall see what the future holds. I am no longer a knee jerk buyer of goods...I still feel partly bad for buying the 3G instead of waiting...but the temptation was too strong.

You're really wrong about the part that I'm trying to convince myself or anyone else. I was just commenting how I felt about it. I've used my share of Blackberrys and am positive I will continue to. I'm far from a fanboy of either.
I obviously don't do as much with email on my device as you do. I really only read my work email and the attachments. As for my home email, again, I only read it, which as you mentioned, the Iphone's HTML presentation is better than the Blackberry's. The only thing I ever upload and or send is pictures, which works fine on the Iphone.
I still stand by what I wrote.
Any thing more involved than that, I usually use one of my computers.

I agree with most everything you just said. The 3G is the first Iphone I've ever had. I've had it for 4 months and have got to know what it can and can't do pretty well.
As for waiting for the next generation before getting another one, using that logic, you could just never get a new one. While I'm not a knee jerk buyer of goods, I really, really look and study before I buy anything. My wife would say I do that to the "extreme". When it comes to phones, I have to admit I always like to have the newest or almost newest technology. I usually get a new phone once every year or two.

I think Apple's refusal to add certain basic features (we all know what they are) is going to quickly make the iPhone old technology. A lot of folks went along with the missing features knowing the v1 was Apple's first venture into the cellphone market. There was no excuse for them being left out of the 3G model. Exactly why people are moving on to more feature packed offerings. And let's not forget AT&T's sad 3G network. Mark

the only thing(and this is my opinion) that makes the bb storm not a flawless phone is the software. Being new still they have alot of updates to put out. Out the box though it's just a better phone than the iphone minus the web browsing, music player and app store.

My GF just bought a Storm for me, it's being shipped tomorrow (Friday) and I should get it on Monday and the phone does have some hardware issues as well. The one that Im aware of and that I actually saw at the Verizon store is the screen has doesnt fit flush and omits a ray of light between the screen and the bottom of the case. Not all Storms have this problem but BB is aware of the problem.
I'll only use the Storm to communicate with my GF, she'll be the only one that has the number all my other contacts will call me on my iPhone. Carrying around two cell phones is going to be a PITA but beings she bought it and is paying the bill I don't have much of a choice. The things we do for love... oyi

bugs are inevitable, we know. but the point for me is, bb blod is the ultimate model for kinda berry, right? more than storm, i really prefer iphone to go with the hottie. smart, smarter, so what's next on our phones? storm is not superior, as it just catches the touch-screen trend.

I finally got a chance to use a storm today and I must say I HATE the damn big button screen. It makes the phone so slow. I wanted to try the bold out too but I couldn't find one anywhere (all sold out). The GF is about to get a new phone so trying other options beside the obvious iPhone. Hmmm maybe I could get her to buy the bold and then give her one of the iPhones...

In all fairness Mark, most people who have purchased or spent time with the Storm have not liked it much. We are all happy that you enjoy your new phone, and that's all that matters, YOU enjoy it. To YOU it is a superior phone and that is fantastic, you found a phone that meets or exeeds your needs, wants, and/or expectations, that's like the holy grail for consumers. Congratulations on finding the right device for YOU, now stop bugging people who don't think it's right for them, lol.

Does anyone know what the subsidized price is for the bold? I'm guessing all I need to do to be able to swap back and forth between it and my iPhone is to change my iPhone data plan to the BB data plan. All I will lose is the visual voicemail on the iPhone correct?

Sorry, Mark, they speak the truth. Try to lighten up a little bit in your condemnation of others for not seeing things the way you do. You know I say this out of love and respect. :)
Peace.
I've had my Storm for 24 hours and have been playing with it all day. When I received it, it was damaged from the manufacturer so I had to call Verizon and their sending me out another one.
The keyboard SUX! I've tired playing with the settings and it improved it a little bit but it's still slow as molasses. The camera while it takes good pictures is just as slow as the keyboard. If you want to take a picture you have to plan well in advance what your going to take a picture of. There's been times when I tried to snap a shot and nothing happened so I tried again and again, finally after the forth or fifth time that I tried to take a picture it finally worked but by than it was to late, I missed the shot. Im hoping that it's just this phone thats screwed up if it's not and the replacement is as bad as the original back to Verizon it goes.
About the only positive thing I have to say about the phone has nothing to do with the device itself, it's about Verizon's coverage. It's nice to be able to talk to someone and not constantly have the call being dropped.

Do you have software version 4.7.0.65 or version 4.7.0.75??? You might need to update to the .75 version. That update fixed a lot of the lag. Some versions were shipped without the update. The update can be done via USB link to a computer or over the air. Settings>Advanced Options>Wireless Upgrade...Mark

You guys and gals are so unfair to me. None of you understand that it's not that I don't respect others opinion. This is a forum to discuss electronics. If I see something I don't believe is true I will comment on it. If I see something that I do agree with I will also comment. Either of those things does not make me right and the poster wrong. Nor does it make the poster right and me wrong. I understand and respect that everyone has their own opinion and a right to voice that opinion. I am usually on the outside of the forum because I don't always go along with everyone else. To many people here have formed alliances that prevent them from disagreeing with others.
I may fiercely debate you in a thread but that does not mean I dislike nor disrespect you. I just like to get an intense conversation going that lays all the facts out either way. I am not trying to belittle or brush off anyone else's thoughts. What kind of forum would it be if we all thought alike???
In this instance I vigorously defended the Bold and Storm because both were being trashed by people who didn't even own either. The bad reviews were being given by people who started off by saying. I read this or I played with it for a minute at the store. You cannot give an honest review of anything given either of those scenarios.
People that have been on EIC from the start know that I was the biggest BlackBerry critic around. I change as things or people change. I cannot judge a product on last years offerings. Nor can I close my mind to explore new offerings just because I didn't care for the last ones offered. RIM changed their technology and I gave them a chance. I just happened to love what they have done.
The iPhone in all it's greatness is stuck in a "Holding Pattern". Nothing really exciting has come to the iPhone since it has been released (ok 3G but on a crappy AT&T network) (App Store hmmm nice upgrade) and certainly not of late. Technology is moving fast everyday and I believe the iPhone is falling behind. I want a device that is fresh with new features and technology. Everything the iPhone does (other than a few upgrades) it has done since day one. The iPhone is starting to get boring it needs a major overhaul. I'm not just talking about a case change either. I'm talking about some serious technological upgrades. Time and technology wait for no one. Why should the iPhone be any different??? Mark

Yeah I've got 4.7.0.75 and now that I'm slowly getting used to the keyboard and have adjusted the settings so it responds accordingly I tried using the camera tonight at a little family get together we had at the house.
I tried to take three pictures and on two separate occasions it caused the phone to crash and reboot. For those who aren't aware when the Storm reboots it's not like it turns off than comes back on within a minute or so it takes a good 3-4 minutes to recycle and come back on and by than you've missed shot. After the second time it crashed I put the Storm away for the night and broke out my Canon EOS 350D. I cant MMS any of the pictures to my GF like I wanted to so instead I'll download from my camera to my computer and email them to her.
Mark it's a nice phone, the reception is far superior to AT&T and it feels good in your hand it's just that IMO BB released it prematurely, it still needs some work.
FWIW I enjoy your debates, their intelligent, enjoyable and I have yet to see them get personal, it's refreshing to say the least.

swagger, this is going to be an ongoing battle trying to tell people that the storm is a great phone. Although I am one to believe that the storm is a better phone than the iphone, it's going to get negative responses being that this is an iphone based board. Now.....if you go to crackberry and talk about the iphone it'll be vise versa. The iphone will be looked at as the underdog. As of now it does have it's OS flaws but give it time and im sure bb will put an update out to fix all those little bugs.

I agree with BigCiX, give the Storm some time and let the software developers come up with some better upgrades and the Strom will be everything the iPhone isn't. IMO Jobs/Apple are sitting on their laurels, if their not careful and don't start adding things like MMS and copy and paste the iPhone will soon be considered a dinosaur.

Tug u know how I look at this whole storm vs iPhone thing. Remember how Sony dominated the videogame world with the ps/ps2 and then microsoft came out with the xbox and stole some of Sony's thunder. Still the ps2 was the system to beat. Microsoft got smart and put out the 360 first and now has a great lead over Sony's ps3. Anyway what I'm trying to say is that Sony's arrogence has now dug them a hole and is now overtaken by the blacksheep(microsoft). So I do see blackberry overtaking apples spotlight if stevie doesn't give us basic features that us consumers want. I honestly see the iPhone taking the same route as the sidekick series. 5 sidekicks in the making and none of them have mms or video recording.

Big, I couldnt agree with you more!!
My biggest complaint about the Storm is the touch screens sensitivity. I text ALOT, when I use the Storm it's frustrating when your in the process of typing out a text alot of the time you press a down on a letter and it doesnt show up on the screen than you have to back space. If it only happened periodically it wouldn't be a problem but it happens on every other letter. I adjusted the sensitivity, the hover and the tap but it made very little difference.

Tug,
I had some of the problems you describe also. I talked to Verizon's Tech Support and they promptly sent me another Storm. The second Storm seems to be much better. The second issue has a few bugs but I expect that being it's RIM's first venture into the Touch Screen arena. Look below and see how it kills the iPhone as far as specs are concerned. (Before I get flamed I know I posted this photo in another thread. Please indulge me).

The storm screen really pi*ses me off. I hate pushing into the screen when you use it. Sure the click thingy is cool, but the pushing thing is annoying.
Received my Storm replacement today and I have to admit it works so much better than the first one. There's still some keyboard lag but all in all it's really not that bad.
I believe that after a couple more software updates the phone will be pretty darn close to the iphone.
Merry Christmas

I guess "kills" is a relative term.
I guess "kills" is a relative term.
It's relative to the users point of view and needs. Some need Copy and Paste so in that race the Storm kills. Some need Wi-Fi so the iphone wins that one.
There will always be a difference of opinion in which phone is better. One Man's Trash is Another Man's Treasure.

i've been thinking of getting the storm since the day of it's release but my family and I love the iPhone, don't need copy & paste, and you have to admit there's no phone that scrolls like the iphone!
verizon charges for visual voicemail and after hearing the horror stories of replacements and having to do a "battery pull" all the time, mabye i'll wait for 2nd gen storm to see if it's improved.
iPhone is a gorgeous phone with lots to offer, clicking sound on the iphone letting you know your hitting something would be cool but it's no big deal.

I had problems with my first Storm and it ultimately had to be returned. Verizon sent me two phones, the first replacement arrived 24 hours after it was determined the my original phone was defective. Not sure why they sent a second phone but it arrived 48 hours after I called customer service.
It's $2.99 for visual voice mail, a service I don't feel I need. I've been using my replacement phone constantly for the last 48 hours and have yet to pull the battery. Now that Im getting used to the Storm I actually use it more than my iPhone... who da thunk?

I dont think so, beings I have both phones I think the iPhone is still a superior phone probably because the keyboard is more stable and easier to use. The only reason why I use the Storm more now is because of my GF, if it wasn't for her I'd definitely use the iPhone more.
