Chris -
Minus about 3 people - I enjoy EiC very much so. My question is not of disrespect, but out of sheer curiosity, why are you making EiC into a "facebook" or "myspace"?

i wonder if we're not partially to blame. the EIC community seems to have taken on a life of its own. its grown beyond that of a tech-based forum. apple has us baited with these semi-regular updates - isn't there one next week? - and we've flourished as a "society" while we wait them out.
i'm not into the idea myself. i've joined and abandoned both myspace and facebook within days of creating accounts. i was as curious as i was drunk and, like always, quickly sobered. i like it here because no one pretends to be my "friend", a word that has lost all meaning online.
now, with the social spin, do i befriend both Hondamaker and iCafe? do i remain true to heart and deny friend requests? do i succumb to the peer pressure of having _____ as a friend even though i don't really care for him?
see why im not on facebook? maybe it's me...maybe im not mature enough to balance niceties with honesties...sounds like a Dubya speech.

It's just odd, IMO. You don't find this stuff on other forums. I dunno, it just seems niche.

Personally, I'm all for trying out new things on the site. But rarely is there a new feature on a forum that really makes me want to do more than just use the forum. Because that's what I go to forums to do, and there's certainly enough material here to keep me occupied.
I love the community here, but I'm with Coasts. The more we avoid cliques and personality contests, the better.

that's the problem with "regulars". they like things to remain regular.

Im sure it will all work out well. It has to be based on all of us regulars chatting and socializing under the forums why not have a spot for that.

I think its pretty cool. Lots to do and mess around with... I'm sure, however, there won't be a long line to be MY friend. LOL. This new area might add to some of the "drama" around here but so what? I love stirring crap up around here and this is just another outlet. I'll give it a try. What the hell? regardless of what most of you think about me, I love this place and ALL it's members.. Liberals, commies, illegals, and homos alike! (j/k)
It's a fun and informative place and apparently I've been given "lee-way" in which I'm allowed to operate. For that, Ill give anything a fair shot around here if Chris says so..

I realize it might not be everyone's cup of tea. Honestly, I just joined Facebook a few weeks ago and did so to get an idea of how things work. More importantly, how they might work here at EIC. It was mentioned that no one has ever seen this on a forum or community site. That's correct and that's part of the reason I'm pretty excited. I don't see this as a replacement for the forums, but rather an addition that offers the ability to increase your interaction with others in the commununity. One of the most popular threads on this site is for people to share their iPhone photos. Lately, there have been a number of folks sharing their panaromic photos. I see someone in that bunch creating a "Panoromic Photos Group". They can share tips, photos, etc. Plenty of MacBook Air users here? I'm sure we'll see a group for them somewhere along the lines.
Is it different? Most definitely. Is it for everyone? No, but I do think it will have broad appeal. It won't replace the forums or Facebook, but it will offer a host of capabilities that no other forum or community offers. For that reason alone, I'm plenty excited about it.

Agreed. I love EiC, but when I need technical questions answered, I first go to the "other" site; if I want "social" interaction, I come here, with tech stuff being secondary.

I was previously an administrator of a large automotive forum. Unfortunately the owner was lazy and never did anything to upgrade/improve the community despite constant requests from the members. While it may not be everyones cup of tea, it is nice to see an owner involved in the community and adding new features to the forum.

I mostly with coasts here. I do have a Facebook, and use it, but I'm not sure of what I think of something like that being implemented here. I definitely view the forums as the biggest and most active part of the site, and that won't change. However, I'll play around with it this afternoon and see what I think.

Think of iPhone Social (http://www.everythingicafe.com/index.php?option=com_community&Itemid=167) as the cheese on the burger. Not everyone likes cheese. That in mind, if really want a cheeseburger, you won't find one at sites offering just hamburgers. Of course, we still offer the hamburger and as Lincoln pointed out...it's our most popular item and in fact I'd venture to say we do it better than most.
iPhone Social is just one more way to empower YOU, the members of the site. Maybe you've got a nice collection of iPhone photos that you'd like to share, but they are lost in the Post your iPhone pics thread. Once we get the software fixed, you'll have that capability --- and it'll be easy as pie. There you have it. Who doesn't like Cheesburgers and pie.

this was a good read, especially for me since I've ben a devoted facebook member for four years now. I picked up the habbit in collage and I must say I still don't think I know anyone I've met since collage with out it. It's my understanding that fb took off first accross campuss' and then to the highschools and is just now reaching the mass public. I also understand it to still be very regional, in my own expireince. The problem I see with the whole social networking idea maybe that there are going to be two many dif networks out there. If that makes sence. For example I met a girl this weekend at a wedding and lost her number. But with out even questioning it I got on facebook and found her.social networking isn't going to be for everyone but it seams as if that doesn't matter to the younger generations. There ALL doing it any ways.

So... you've all been waiting for the resident social butterfly to make a statement? Sure you have. :p
Honestly, I'm on Facebook and MySpace. I check both daily. But I normally only respond to the comments and messages that come my way. I don't do those ridiculous apps that they offer and on occassion I'll fill out a survey and post it. But I'm mainly there to just keep in contact with my friends. And yes, I know and have interacted with every single person on my list. 90% of them are people I knew before I got the social networks. The rest are people I met here, or people I met in real life a couple times and added them to continue interacting with them.
Now, how do I feel about EICspace? I dunno yet. I mean I'm already on 2 social networks. And I have a handful of the EICers on there already. So... I'm not sure I will use it often. But I suppose I'll create some photo albums or something. I love pictures and looking at others' photos and random moments that are caught on camera.
I guess we'll just have to see how this plays out. But right now... I have to go clean my left contact... its foggy.
Lata.

Let's remember that with iPhone Social, you will not be getting friend requests from people you met 15-20 years ago, etc. It's more or less an expansions of services and ability to interact with those here in the EIC community. The photo albums alone are a big plus in my book. (Of course, still working on getting that fixed). :foot:
Here's also a thought...how many people will join EIC for iPhone Social (http://www.everythingicafe.com/index.php?option=com_community&view=frontpage&Itemid=167) and not the forums?

speaking of Skins fans, man yall sure have it rough, it looks like the Skins are starting their annual downhill turn. Sure looked promising at first. Granted they have an identical 6-4 record as the Cowboys, but after that 5-1 start things have been tough.

Annual downhill turn?!
Like last year? Come to think of it, the 'Skins haven't done all that badly the last three or four years -- they're even managed to win a playoff game or two. Must be some of that Cowboy humor shining through... (and the 'Skins do have one more conference win, if you want to be picky). But that was of last weekend; everything could change in one or the other's favor this Sunday...
As for puns, I've always been well-versed in them. I honed my craft in the Air Force, where I had one or two co-workers who kept my skills at a high level through competition.

I will most likely disable the forum "social features". The new iPhone Social (http://www.everythingicafe.com/index.php?option=com_community&view=frontpage&Itemid=167) is a true social networking app within the site. The makers of the forum software made a valiant effort, but it just doesn't compare.
In the end, there won't be duplication of features.

How to add friends?
Visit iPhone Social. Select Search within the Friends tab.
Type the username of the friend you like to add and click search.
Click Add as a friend.
That person will receive a notification that you have added them as a friend.
Now, email notifications are down, so that's going to delay things a bit. The friend would have to visit their Profile to see the invite.

Thinking about a contest whereby entry will be completed by a certain activity level in the iPhone Social. I'm thinking iPhone accessories as a prize. Waffling on whether it should be random drawing of entries or selecting an actual winner.
