Good thinking Hippo. Season 3+ are useless to me. Sadly, because I really did it enjoy it.

useless? tom hanks was on some nondescript island. there were no others, no black cloud, no mysterious illness, no time warp effect, etc. Why am I wasting my breath. If you don't like the show its not like it matters. This is its final season any way. Its not like we need the ratings anymore. Go watch spongebob so you can be intellectually stimulated. :p

Well I'm sure that ratings had nothing to do with the end of the show at season 5. Just look at the ratings from the beginning of the season to the end. Seasons 2 and 3 both had a DECREASE of 5 MILLION viewers from the premiere to the finale. I don't think that is just a coincidence. Even season 4 lost some 4 MILLION viewers. Each progressive season saw less viewers at the premiere and dwindling numbers from there. I suppose that maybe LOST did need the ratings.

I just wish that the networks could run shows like they did in the old days -- run all the new shows, then show the reruns, and then break for three or four months and come back with the new season.

Agreed, Naps. Television scheduling has gotten so random and loose, it's just annoying. That and they feel the need to advertise for months before a show actually returns because they take so much time off.
Not just Lost either. *cough*24*cough*....
Love them, though. Can't wait for the season premieres.

I think part of the reason is that episodes take so much longer to film nowadays. There's so much more post-production, etc.

This is true. Shows have a LOT more production value these days than they used to. I remember when a mil an episode for STTNG was considered extravagant.

well, i take that back... the only shows i watch anymore have no overarching story to them... like shows on the Food Network, Discovery Channel, History Channel... Top Gear... stuff like that. If i happen to catch one, great, but i don't have to watch them in-order, and if i miss one altogether, no biggie.

Season 5 bump
Any thoughts on season 5?
How crazy was lastnight any thought on whats going on bc i kinda lost (no pun intended). I get that the island is moving back and forth in time but whats going on with charlotte is she having like the same thing and desmond was in the constant? Also the first seen when faraday was back in time when the darma was building the orchid. WTF its crazy i love it!Faradaythat dude seems to be a f n genius!
If you want recaps on every show check out this dude he does great recaps with secrets and things you missed. He will slow down and reverse the wispers so you can kinda make out what they say. Check it out its worth the time.

Writing the show the way they did allowed them to have any character from any episode, show up at any time on the island. Season 4 was not the best but this first episode of season 5 makes the future episodes look promising. I am sure they will be gripping. (Season 4 rarely made me look forward to the next episode. I am already looking forward to the next episode.)
Commercials. I might start watching it an hour later than it airs, so I can skip the commercials. They must have made a crapload off of all the commercials. It seemed like 5 minutes of programming 4 minutes of commercials.
I have to say they never "got me" last night. Lost has a way of showing characters bodies so you cannot tell who they are until they are "revealed". Most of the "reveals" last night were not that suprising. They were almost predictable.
Things you might have to look forward to. Seeing "Adam and Eve" from the cave. Seeing how the black rock got there and who was on it. Seeing the blast door map, and who all helped draw it up. Finding out what the symbols meant when the clock ran down. The statue. There is a long list of things I could put here.
I am beginning to see how they are going to tie everything together. Remember pushing the button? Now we might just know why someone had to push that button.........to keep the "record" on track. All of the other mysteries tie in. It is going to be interesting how it all happens though. I would like to think that the Oceanic Flight was the future, and they all have to make sure that everyone gets on that flight. And we will be seeing flashbacks of the future.
I am looking forward to this being one of the best put together television series ever, front to back.

Well the blast door map was done by Kelvin Inman http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Kelvin_InmanThe dude that was in the hatch when desmond showed up. It was started by the guy before kelvin and was taken over by kelvin when he blew his head off.

BTW sam becket was the lead role in Quantum Leap. Guy builds a device that lets his consciousness travel to the past and switch places with someone in history. His brother died in a war and he wanted to go back and save him. Well, the machine screws up and he just keeps jumping bodies throughout time. Each time he's put into a place where he can do something to make the world a better place in the long run. His only companion is AL. He's a holographic projection of a dude in his time. He's the only one that can see AL. To the viewer Sam looks the same at all times. But when he looks into the mirror he see the face of the man, or in some cases woman, that he occupies. It was actually a pretty entertaining show. I think if they were to do something like that now it would be awesome.

The time "shifting" seems to happen a little too conveniently. I mean, why not take them back a few hundred years or propel them into the very distant future? I understand from a “show creator’s perspective” that would not tie the stories together, but it makes me wonder if that convenience is actually the island or maybe Jacob directing the shifts to make these “connections.” I get a sense that the island or Jacob has an end game other than just protecting its existence and position.
This season is really great so far, jam packed with goodies. The last few were a little depressing. A lot of the mystery was gone. I’m actually excited about the new developments.
