Info is per Macblogz.....
http://www.macblogz.com/2008/11/11/att-iphone-tethering-plan-specifics-no-unlimited-plan/
Some Specifics....
• 5GB Data Cap (just like Blackberry users) - AT&T will automatically turn off your tethering connection if you use too much bandwidth. Of note, the 5GB cap might get sliced for all users, not just iPhone users, in order to accommodate all new tethering plan customers (bandwidth demand).
• Initial connection through iTunes? (not sure if this is every time you connect, or just for initial setup)
• Expected speeds: GPRS: 30k - dialup speeds / EDGE: 110k - ISDN speeds / 3G: 1000k - slow broadband.
• You’ll want to disable auto-updates for everything, so as to not go over usage limitations.
• Will be +$30/month, new iPhone plans may be rolled out with tethering rolled in.
• Do not pro-rate tethering/bandwidth, it can become a nightmare, instead wait until new billing cycle.
• For unlimited bandwidth, AT&T will tell you to get a wireless PC card.
• No idea on a launch date.

Do you think there might be a pay as you tether type plan?.. i will only need to tether very occassionaly, so i cant justify the 30 a month for my needs.

I feel like its just to expensive on top of the data plan you have to pay already especially with that cap

I got NetShare legitimately through the iTunes App Store and I will not being paying anything additional to use an App I've already paid for, sorry AT&T.

Yeah, NetShare was in the store for a VERY limited time before it was pulled. It allowed you to tether your laptop with the phone. Of course this is something that ATT was not going to tolerate so it was pulled pronto.
It sold for $9.99, but very well worth it for the lucky few that got it. I had my chance and let it slip away.

i just use pdanet to surf the net when i can't get wifi on my laptop (or it isn't free). this is a decent gesture from apple and at&t, but i'll stick with padanet!
Is there an update on the AT&T roll out of tethering? I have been using a datacard supplied from work... but that is going away. I have been thinking about getting a datacard plan on my own... but they are expensive, so I probably will not.
Does anyone know if the iPhone/AT&T tethering plan will use the usb cable or the wifi connection? Hopefully it would be wi-fi.
I have been hesitant to jailbreak my iphone... but PDAnet may be a good enough reason to do it... especially if the AT&T plan is non-existant or poor quality.

I have a JB iPhone 3G and I'm considering tethering with PDAnet. For those of you who use it, can AT&T tell the difference between data used on the phone and data used on the laptop? If they can tell it was used on the laptop, can they charge you for the data? Is there nothing to worry about as long as you use less than 5 Gb a month on the laptop?
Thanks guys!

I understand they can tell... if for no other reason they can tell which browser is connected.
I have been waiting for AT&T's tethering plan, willing to pay the rumored $30/month. I am sure there are a lot of people like me... but I cannot figure out why they are leaving so much money on the table.

^how do you understand they can tell? please provide some type of resource for this broad claim.

I am not an expert... but my understanding is that your ISP (AT&T in this case) can monitor which browser is connected for most internet traffic. I know that for my personal web site, and for forums that I moderate... I get reports which list which browser each user is currently using.
I would expect that if AT&T saw Internet Explorer or Firefox responses coming from the iPhone, that they would have a pretty good idea that it was not running native on the iPhone.

Your ISP can tell a lot of things about you.
