Well, you need to get Backgrounder from Cydia. Once installed, you can press and hold the home button to activate or deactivate it from within any app.

Nothing right now has true push notifications unless you use Exchange or MobileMe. Beejive has a workaround but I'm not willing to spend $16 on an IM.

Fring has sound notifications if you simply lock your iPhone without exiting the program. Pretty neat feature. But you cannot use another app at the same time.

Also, you can exit Fring and say, google something, get the info and launch fring again and continue the conversation. The other person might see you log on and off, but it doesn't stop anything.
