depends on what you're using it for. are you into gaming, photo-, or video-editing? Any other special applications you need to use?

i will be using mostly photoshop and some video editing. photoshop will be the only special applications, maybe some sort of DJ application although that probably has no relavance

then, in your case, i would say the extra $300 is definitely worth it. especially if you want it to last you through college.

I totally agree. Save up the extra $300 if you have to and get the new one. It will be worth it for photoshop alone.

Hey man, I'm in the same situation. I would go for the new MacBook. It will last you longer than the plastic one, but wait a while. I heard that there seems to be a problem with the click pad.

I agree with the others. If you're needing it to last throughout college then you may as well get up the $300 and get the "best" that is currently offered.

I still don't trust the uniclickpad though.

i've used it a bit at work, and it's fine... at least the ones i used. If you don't like how it clicks, then just tap. I don't really see the issue.

It's not that I don't like the way it clicks, it's just that I like having a separate button in case I want to click as opposed to tap. I have tap set up on the MBA but find myself clicking more than tapping.

but you CAN still click... granted, it's not even across the pad, but the choice is still there.

Oh yeah, of course. I guess it just stems from the fact that I have gotten used to having a different button for clicking that isn't the trackpad. I'm used to stretching my hand down and clicking and do it more than tapping. I think given some time I would probably enjoy the unipad.

New MacBook Pro made out of aluminium, great!

i got the new macbook last week and I'm loving the new trackpad.
I find it ways easier to drag with the new trackpad. Dont have to the 2 fingers or two hands anymore.
However, I almost never use the click. I use the tap most of the time. So far its not bothering me one bit. Every time I clicked it worked.

I'd say go for the newer. It has faster memory, and aluminum is just waay cooler :D

I agree with everyone above ... Get the new Macbook, it is a much better machine IMO. The only thing missing is Firewire, however unless you have gear that is firewire specific you won't need it. The new macbook just looks and feels fantastic, a great improvement over the plastic previous generation.

thanks everyone for your replies. Do most universities have equipment that's compatible with macs? And can you explain the FireWire issue to me.

Basically, you won't need a FireWire port unless you have a camera that uses it for data transfer. The new MacBook wouldn't work for me as my mini dv camera uses FireWire for data transfer. I also purchased back in August when the school promo was going on, so I saved $300 making the higher white MacBook edition only $999.

My university's wifi is TTLS secured, it works with Mac OS but not on the iphone :(

The new macbooks doesn't have any Firewire port. If you have any firewire devices, check if they are usb compatible, or think about going with the white mb.

ok well that shouldn't be a problem. I've decided on the new one but I've got to make sure the university of Louisville supports macs. I sure hope so cause I really do want to use anything else.

The new Macs do have an Express 34 slot to add firewire ports for those of you that really need it.

**EDIT**

Sorry, I was mistaken. The new MacBooks do NOT have an ExpressCard slot. Only the MAcBook Pros do.

Oh, towards the click pad, I meant a different issue.
If you go scrounging around the internet, you'll find tons of cases where people's pad stop responding (at all) after about 50 clicks. It usually takes some time until they work again. It's supposed to be a growing problem.

Depending on software. Personally, I installed Windows XP with BootCamp to try and get around the software compatibility problem.

I just got a new 2.4ghz mac book and let me tell ya, well worth the extra 300 (500 in my case;) ). I custom ordered mine with 4gb of ram and iwork installed. The thing is perfect. Over 100 "clicks" and still no issue with the pad, no slanted keys, no blotchey or washed out screen, pad is perfectly centered in the hole, no falling notebook top.... And all of these are "major issues" if you read enough forums....

Just from looking at the new Macs on Apples site, I dont see where the express card slot is located? Can someone post a pic?

it's on the left side near the USB ports.

If you're referring to the new MacBooks, the only thing I see near the USB port is an ethernet port; not an express 34 slot.

well, it's there. It may be hard to spot because it's covered by an aluminum flap. Next time I work I can take a pic... Maybe later I can find it listed in the specs.

I got a white Macbook and I love the white, not to mention it matches my white iphone.
BUT, I was terribly disappointed when almost immediately a corner of the laptop started lifting. Kind of hard to explain but it's a piece of the plastic that surrounds the keyboard and track pad. I can only hope they have improved the quality of the new macbook for the price they are charging for them. But then again, everything in this world lately is being made cheap in quality. Lately I have been feeling like everything I own needs replacing sooner!!:frown:

well, i must apologize. Turns out, it is only the Macbook Pro that has the ExpressCard slot... i could have sworn i saw it on a MacBook, though... then again, they all look the same now.

I'll edit my earlier post.

I can tell you that yes, yes they have! This thing is solid as hell. Hell, it feels more solid than my toughbook at work.

Yep, late at night, when everyone's in bed, not a creature stirring, not even the cat who's sleeping next to me. It's the best time to get uninterrupted computer time, I just pay for it in the morning. But nothing a few cups of coffee won't fix.:tounge:

LOL! This is me. Coffee does seem to cure those late nights. I'll be at my PC for what feels like hours and tell myself that I'm going to bed only to pull out my MacBook and start all over again. By the time I have to get my day started, I'm already exhausted.
