bluetooth and sleep mode

I read on another thread that someone stated they couldn't use their iphone with the bluetooth speakerphone system in their car because bluetooth shuts off when the phone goes to sleep....is this true? is there any way to keep bluetooth on even while the phone goes to sleep? in case you are wondering, this is important to me because I have a bluetooth speaker phone system in my car and don't want to resort to using one of those stupid bluetooth earpieces....also I don't have my iphone yet or else I would have figured it out myself. I'm waiting until the end of this week when my verizon contract expires....

I think under settings, you can set it so that the phone never goes on sleep mode (unless you hit the sleep button manually).

if i change it to never go asleep, will the battery go bye-bye? ie, If I'm out on the go all day with no way to charge it, will it survive? Any of you try this out - changing it to not go to sleep?
