I have a iphone/itouch car interface hooked up to my 2008 Toyota Camry. I have been using it on my itouch (1G) and have been able to charge and select playlists without any problems. However when I connect my iPhone 3G, I get a notification from the iPhone that charging is not possible (but I can still continue to listen to music)

How can this be, its just one connector. If it (charging) works on the iTouch why not on the iPhone 3G.

I can't answer why it won't work, but I can tell you I have run into the same exact problem with a friend's boat. It plays my 3g iphone just fine, but has a warning sign that it is incompatable as far as charging.

The iphone 3G cannot be charged with a FireWire power adapter or FireWire-based car charger. The 3G only has USB charging pins. This is why older chargers won't work with the 3G.

There are a couple of adaptors available that get around this problem:

Yes, very good. I was aware of these and totally forgot. That should solve the problem.

Such an easy fix for a complicated issue. Brilliant idea really, license the charging chip and resale it as an adapter for older gear. "Why didn't I think of that?"

Enterprise my man enterprise lol.

Seems like Apple has infinite revenue streams coming in from their products. Making older chargers not compatible kind of seems wrong, however for the adapter maker it is great.

Are the new chargers reverse compatible?
