There's a really nice free Chess Web App available for the iPhone. It even has a nice opening book:

I agree, a very good free chess game...and its difficult to win.
Off the subject of chess for a minute, does anyone know of that program that was supposed to start up your car and roll down your windows right from your iphone? I forget what its called but it should be out by now. I would pay some bucks for that....if i could find it.

Really good game, a bit easy tho... but the AI is dynamic, its like your playing a human player.

London,
Did you try the "Hard" mode (available from the Menu)?
In that mode the best I've been able to do is force a draw. (The play is a little more conservative in that mode as well.)
The main thing I like about its opening book is the rather unconventional way it counters the "Stonewall Offense". It really allows me to try out a plethora of variations off that Queens Pawn opening.

Back in the 80's, I was an avid buyer of chess computers, much to the chagrin of my wife (now my ex -- not because of the computers). I went through a steady succession of them, bought in the US and in Germany when I was stationed there. Oh yeah -- the Philippines , too.
They ranged from crappy little calculator-type machines to nice, large wooden auto-response units that played fairly well. But now that desktop computers have so much speed and memory available, there are many fantastic chess software packages out there.

Yes. Chess O was just released. I'm the creator of it and plan on making many additions to it in the coming future. I have an update coming soon that will fix many bugs, adds a more varied opening book, and a performance enhancement that should theoretically increase the strength when not handicapped by 2-3x. Many of the issues in the initial reviews are already addressed and the update will be pushed out soon.
I am welcome to any comments, suggestions, and ideas so please don't hesitate.
If anyone is interested, please visit http://www.chesso.org
Hope everyone enjoys it!

Will the update include a fix for the board orientation (white square in bottom right corner)?
Thanks in advance!

I downloaded Cyber Chess for free on Black Friday, and downloading your Chess O right now. Haven't tried either yet, but hopefully I can on the weekend when I get some free time. I was looking for a good free chess game as well before Black Friday, and now I have two alternatives. From the description, Chess O seems promising :).
