If you don't have an international calling and data plan you will get "crushed".

1. Get the iPhone international data plan (know that you have to keep it for 90 days). This is the most important thing.

2. Turn off data roaming.

3. Leave the phone out of airplane mode, so you can use WiFi for data (if you can find it).

AT&T has tips on how to roam internationally with the iPhone 3G and minimize the chances of a big bill right here (http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/popups/international-iphone-tips.jsp).

We went for 2 weeks to Germany and France in October. We were told that we can get an international data plan for 30 days with different amount of data usage. We opted for the 50$ plan which gave us more data usage (just in case!) and asked for it for 30 days.
The iPhone worked great while being in Europe. We used whenever available WiFi. We were not aware of the fact that data roaming should be off and we did have additional charges but it was worth it!
Only downside: when we called AT&T b/c our last bill was extremely high we learned that they keep charging us the international data plan and that there was no indication in our account that we had asked for it for only 30 days.

Other than that: its worth it and it worked.

Great thanks for the info, did you use the regular net also like 3g for data how did that work. I bought the 50 meg plan. It was 50.00 they told me to call AT&T when I get back in the USA so the billing will stop, however they didn't say anything about data roaming or airplane mode?

Whenever there was no WiFi available we used 3G. There are several mobile phone networks who offer 3G so that we had coverage everywhere. We had the 50MB plan as well. We had the data roaming off and instead of checking for e-mail automatically every 30min or so we made sure it was on manual. Otherwise its draining your usage.
