I am tired of the boring 3g.

Dont get me wrong. the 3g is solid. But boring.

I have jail broken, and tweaked my 3g. yawn.

I have previously come from a developer community. Where we constantly pushed each other to tweak and develop our platform.

The iphone community is filled with 5% geeks, whom i love, and 95% soccer moms, which i hope to love, but have no geek love for.

I have been a

Hitachi g1000 user
htc 6600
htc 6800
htc 6700
htc 6900

user. The communitys were huge, and geeky, and always developing.

If your confused, then go to ppcgeeks . com, or xda-developers . com and then you will understand.

I sold my 6800 and bought the iphone. Its fun and slick. But im soooooo bored.

I am going the android rout. If only for the community spirit.

Its been fun.

Good luck with the G1 ... Android does look pretty cool, perhaps by the time they release the G5 or so they hardware will look equally impressive.

LOL --- We don't have 3G here in Tucson yet, dang it ... Actually, I really look forward to the slew of real world reviews coming from actual users. I called the T-Mobile store here in Tucson and the agent said "We have one for the store, and it works surprisingly well one edge." --- I am still laughing.

the g1 looks like it's fun to use but I have say it's one ugly phone and if you do stay with a touch screen Iphone is the best by far and if your a keyboard guy then I would go with the bold....the g1 is more like I phone I would play with for 1h or 2 and the give it back it has nothing that really attracts me....but that's just me I hope u enjoy it

I must admit that I love new devices which is the reason for my own financial crisis but the looks of the G1 don't impress me much. However, I've never tried one so I can't be too critical. Regardless, I just love the iPhone and thanks to the EIC I might just have a new one, soon. The iPhone does leave a lot to be desired unless there's a "jailbreak" but I'm still happy with mine.

The android technology looks good, but couldn't they have picked a better phone? That is like the ugliest phone I have ever seen. Who picked it? Some mainframer or something?

But I guess the next Android phone (hopefully HTC Touch HD) will rock. That will be good competition for the iPhone. Apple needs competition to get it to move quicker with iPhone updates.

Ugly. Agreed. Even the Blackberry Storm looks better. The physical keyboard looks hard to hold.

Someone on my blog says he likes the G1 and defends it to the hilt. There's no T-Mobile 3G network in Hawaii and he's still a G1 fanatic and is willing to wait until the END of 2009!!!! Now THAT is a gross fanboy!
People are suing Apple and AT&T because they had no 3G the day they bought the v2 iPhone!

Its weight, keyboard, and browser really turn me off. Pretty much everything else about it excites me, though. Remember, folks, this is only the beginning of development for this thing. There will be better handsets and more exciting software less than a year from now.

He refers to himself has a geek, however i'd rather call him a tech junkie...always needs to have the latest gadget/toy/electronic to show off to his friends like some tool.

Anyways as he leaves take the apple usb cord and tie it around your arm...its time for your next hit of google g1....mmmmmm yes (eyes roll back) yes feels nice... but the high will only last so long.

It's actually pretty light. I'm surprised at the keyboard. First off, it has to appeal to sliders (aka Sidekick style fans). Plus, it's not so easy to type on. Isn't the idea of a physical keyboard to offer tactile feedback. Not so much with the G1. Pac Man rocks though.:tounge:

Browser is going to take some getting used to. Where as Safari is super easy to use, I haven't gotten the hang of the zoom in/out on the G1.

One cool feature that would be iPhone worthy is notifications. You just drag the tab at the top and you can see SMS/new email. Perhaps Apple would be borrow it down the road and make even better.

It's actually pretty light.

5.57 oz vs a V1 @ 4.8 or a 3G @ 4.7 oz.

Maybe not much, but it's still over 16% heavier than my V1, which I already consider to be a heavy phone.

One cool feature that would be iPhone worthy is notifications. You just drag the tab at the top and you can see SMS/new email. Perhaps Apple would be borrow it down the road and make even better.

That is one of those things that I think will really catch on. I hope.

Is Android development FULL access? Like... do developers have hooks to OS-kernel-level type stuff like notifications and hardware access? If so, it will likely prove to be an incredible platform.

Londonrockz568
10-23-2008, 06:48 PM
To me it looks like what the Sidekick should have been. Sharp needs to step it up or be lost among the powerful.
I dont like how its just so... windows looking. Buttons everywhere, swivel up this, track ball geeze. I'd rather have a phone thats sleek, in one nice and tidy effecient package.
The problem with the android G1 is its trying so hard to do so many things at once. Why have a touch screen, then have a full keyboard, again why touch, but then have a track ball. Its like they tried to make EVERYONE happy. Apple just made more sense and made an effecient design thats not backtracking itself. Now apple didnt try to make everyone happy but in reality no one ever is, so ppl will just have to build a bridge and get over it...even tho MMS and cut n paste is like wtf apple.

Apple= simplistic in design and use giving you everything you need in a very effecient package with no extra un-needed things.
G1= complicated in design giving you everything you need and some you really could have gone without in a very bulky needs to do everything make all people happy look.

psylichon
10-23-2008, 06:49 PM
Well, yes... but that's quite a biased view ya got there. On a phone you've never used. I agree with your sentiments regarding design, but there is certainly room in the market for a phone like the G1.

It will be popular. We must accept this.

Londonrockz568
10-23-2008, 06:59 PM
I have used the G1, is pretty nice (i try not to be biased lol i guess) the open-ness of it is what will make it popular....but mainly amongst guys and the techno inclined. Girls just care if its pretty looking and takes pictures lolz. Apple wins but i digress.

The market is opening up, Apple iphone is no longer the main "multimedia" phone. It was only a matter of time before the other companies caught up. (I call these new all in one phones multimedia since they pretty much do everything) its just like how they have "SMS" phones (sidekicks, voyager, Samsung F700 etc) "picture" Sony ericssons, 6mp and up type phones "Internet" Palms etc and "budget" etc etc...

Anyway the market is open its time for battle between the big 3.
Iphone 3g vs G1 vs Storm.

Pretty much
Iphone - Trendy, younger, music, creative market.
G1 - Windows platform phone OR windows most comfortable, creative market.
Storm - The buisness, CEO powerhouse windows user, young market.

I disagree, no comany is more evil than Apple. Steve's drive and passion can be taken the wrong way but the way i look at it is if your not willing to bully for what you want then your vision wont be realized...which is why when he got back into Apple he fired all those diluted people.

Speaking of evil companies Microsoft isnt exactly the nice humble child...watch Browser wars battle of IE vs Netscape on the discovery channel. It's pretty amazing to watch stuff like that.

I think it's chunky. :D I agree that the keyboard isn't easy to type on, and there are some parts that are so unintuitive, like the browser, as you mentioned. It does seem to have potential, and I'm sure it will mature and get more polished over time. I'm jealous of the MMS and the direct link to the DRM-free Amazon music store, though. If only I could take those features and meld them into my iPhone... (sigh)

I like the G1, based on what I've read - but the phone that has my attention is the Storm. I may go back to Verizon. ATT sucks ass, and I can't take it anymore. I TRIED to have a conversation today, and it disconnected 12 times in less than 7 minutes. We finally gave up until later in the day. That's just absurd.

Agreed! Competition will be getting very fierce within the next year. Two words for anyone really trying to get into this touch screen market though - Multi Touch. I don't think there is anything else in the market now that actually uses multi touch is there? There are plenty of devices that boast a touch screen, but only allow use of one finger at a time.

Yeah if Apple holds as many patents as I think they do, it could be a while before we see multitouch on another mobile. At least, in an implementation as smooth and natural as Apple's.

I used the G1 today for a little bit. I liked it a lot, but maybe it was because it's something new. I did like the browser for how fast it loaded and rendered pages. The texting part is somewhat foreign to me, since I am so used to the iPhone and opening up the keyboard is not something I am used to right now. I am also not used to the use of the menu button on the phone, which the iPhone does not use. I feel the iPhone is a more streamlined phone in terms of usability, but I can see the G1 being great for people that don't like the iPhone or people who like Tmobile better, or people that don't want to break their contract.

The one reason why I cannot recommend the G1 to people here in Hawaii is because there is no T-Mobile 3G network in our state. And even a G1 user here told me that there is no plans for a 3G network in the forseeable future. This G1 user *hopes* that T-Mobile rolls out 3G sometime next year. That's like iPhone users *hoping* for cut & paste.

And, according to the T-Mobile site EDGE in our state is quite spotty. For a phone that's supposed to provide a great internet experience, it would be tough to achieve that without a GREAT connection.

Apple holds the patents, which is why its taken quite some time for the competition to even get to simple touch screen.

my 2 cents. ( trying to be unbiased)..

tmobile is the worst....

service is horrible..

customer support is horrible...

customer care for phone problems is horrible..

the G1 phone look ugly...

the keyboard and buttons really defeats the touch screen idea..

it looks awkward to use..

the open platform is a great idea and will make it awesome to play with..

to me it looks like a next gen sidekick..

but to each his/her own.

and yes im speaking as a former ( tmoblie / sidekick customer).

Tell bigsix, he's 95% in the closet. Only his boyfriend really knows.

noone cares peace out
