Something strange I stumbled upon - whenever I type the word "sturt" it won't let me type the last "t" - unless I backspace and retype!
So far it appears the only word affected - please have a go on your iphone and see if the same thing happens. It's more amusing than annoying, doesn't bother me, but it's really strange...
I'm running jailbroken 2.1 btw...

Mine adds an "r" at the end even when I type the "t."

exactly! The last letter can be anything BUT a t or an e - press either and it just presses r...
Joke from programmer with weird sense of humor perhaps? Who knows...

I will give you the quick answer to this question. It is not weird what your phone is doing it was built like that. When you begin to type the iPhone tries to figure out the word you are typing. The iPhone then shuts down the keys not needed to spell the word so you will not mistype. Mark

So the iPhone has TWO anti-mispelling devices - the autocorrect one as well as this one.
So the real problem is "sturt" isn't added to the dictionary - how can I manually add it, assuming there is a way?
Personally, I would have thought the autocorrect mechanism would have been sufficient...

Type accurately.
iPhone analyzes keystrokes to suggest words as you type. It does this by employing complex mathematics to track the pattern of letters you type and match them to the pattern of other common words. iPhone uses a complete English dictionary to correct text, and it learns the words you type most often — including proper names and information from your contacts list.

That is to say, ONLY the visual autocorrect mechanism...although I probably have come to rely on the other mechanism without realizing it. Thanks for clearing that up Swagger.

When the word comes up that iPhone chooses click the (X) to cancel it. After about five times or so the iPhone will learn and allow the word you are typing. Check out this link for more info http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/keyboard.html
