Hey all,
my girlfriend wants the white iPhone 3G, and I want to get her one for Christmas--she's with AT&T, but how do I get the phone to her and it still be a surprise? We don't share accounts--she has her own account, I have mine--both on AT&T. And I have the black iPhone 3G on my account...she has a Blackjack II currently.

Apple does make it tough for situations like this. Unless the way of doing things change, this (c http://www.apple.com/iphone/buy/) is the closest thing I can think of. Kind of a hassle and you may not know enough info anyway, but the only thing I can think of. Maybe someone else will have a brilliant idea.

That's what I figured. I figured I could have her open a gift of a picture of a white iPhone and that could be the surprise. Then we order and I pay. Then she goes and picks up whenever it gets in. Kind of a lame "gift", but that's the only way I can do it and it get on her account. There's one other reason I think this is good--she can decide if she wants it (along with the two-year contract extension...she's already out of contract). It would be a crappy gift if she were leaving AT&T.
I think that's the best idea.

I'd say maybe a $300 gift card or something and tell her "i know how much you've wanted a 3G, so I got you a gift card so you can get one"...If she's leaving att, you can still use the gift card for something else.

U can't add a line to your account and buy a new iPhone with a number. Then port her number over to the iphne as soon as she opens up the gift?

Take her to an ATT or Apple store on the 24th and buy her the phone so she can use it.
Remember when you were a kid and you opened that toy you've been asking for for months on Christmas morning and then find out that mom and dad forgot to buy batteries...don't be like mom and dad :)
Then give her an iTunes gift card and Christmas day so she can download some stuff.

I don't know if I can do this. Can anyone confirm if this has been done? It seems really messy--if I create a new line, and buy a iPhone subsidized, then I'm starting a new two-year contract. Could she then move that line to her account and then deactivate her old line? And get the port done internal to the same account? Again, seems like I'd be asking for trouble, just to have her open the box herself.

Yes you would. Not a good idea for many reasons, but we won't get into that. Just something you shouldn't do.

You could always put a blind fold on her and take her to the Apple Store and pull off the blind fold in front of the iPhones. Then after she gets the iPhone, put the Blind Fold back on and take her to dinner somewhere. Maybe put it back on after dinner and then take her somewhere romantic and remove the blind fold again. Remember, third times the charm. ;-)

Ohhhh, I like this idea the best!!
From a girls point of view I agree, take her there, surprise her and don't tell her where your taking her, although you might want to make sure they are in stock still on Christmas Eve, and I like the itunes card idea for Christmas day.

I would think that she would, it's a very cool device that can do so much! .. I am happy with my purchase. Now if I could convince my wife to leave Verizon I will get her one.
You could buy one for the unsub.'d price and then give her the new one. I think that is the only way to do it for it to be a suprise.

Here's a best way...
Apple Store sells iPhone gift cards that can be redeemed for iPhone 3G.
All you have to do is to buy the gift card, which let's you pick which iPhone you want, keeping in mind that the receiver of the gift IS going to sign up with at&t contract.
The iPhone gift cards are sold as $199 for 8GB iPhone, or $299 16GB iPhone. Keep in mind that you will not have to sign up for contract when purchasing the gift card.
Then, wrap the gift card, put it under the x-mas tree, and when your gf opens the gift, she will be in JOY when she finds out that she just have to pick up an iPhone with the EXCLUSIVE iPhone gift card.
